The Last Airbender (2010)
I quite liked it..
I saw this movie with very low expectations due to the poor criticism it has received from both the audience and the critics. I was interested to see whether I feel the same way, because I usually tend to like films that all the critics hate and vice versa.. and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was actually pretty good. The overall storyline was interesting, the special effect were amazing and the cast was sympathetic (I do not usually like little children in movies, but the small kid was pretty cool). Yes, at times the storyline was rushed and the dialog was cheesy, but overall it was a pretty good movie, unfortunately probably not very memorable. But I definitely recommend seeing it and forming your own opinion, not relying only on the negative reviews.
The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (2009)
Not bad, but instantly forgettable
This movie was entertaining and sometimes kept me on the edge of my seat, but I must admit, only a day after watching it, it's hard to remember this movie. So I believe that in a week I will forget that I have ever seen it.
The plot was overall good, but the ending was so predictable due to the lack of characters and it was easy to choose the killer: it was either the guy himself or his sister. And if you guessed that it was the sister, you knew how the movie would end. Also, the last scene of the movie was totally unnecessary.
I liked the acting - I can't remember a single actor/actress who did a bad job.
Watch it if you like the idea of jumping in time and you expect 90 min of decent entertainment.
The Hangover (2009)
Great idea, bad execution
Firstly, I must admit I saw this movie with high expectations - everybody kept saying how funny this movie is. So I was prepared to laugh for 90 minutes. But now I'm very disappointed.
I liked the idea. 4 men go to Las Vegas for a crazy night and end up losing the groom. They can't remember anything and have to put the puzzle back together and find the groom before the wedding. Sounds funny already, right? But it wasn't funny. Okay, there were a few laughs and overall it was an entertaining movie, but absolutely nothing special.
The movie had so many story lines that could have made it very funny. First, there was this baby and they had no idea whose was it. But the baby was there for 15 min and nothing funny happened. The tiger - also nothing exciting (what was the point of Mike Tyson??) Phil being in the hospital - they said that the pictures would explain it, but I'm sorry, I didn't get it. Stu lost his tooth and the reason was mentioned once. I didn't like the place where they finally found Doug - who was red now because he had spent 2 nights on the roof - he could have easily saved himself from there just by screaming. They never gave us a timeline of the events - how and when everything exactly happened. It would have been nice to see everything - maybe as flashbacks or fast forward in the end of the movie. PS How did the chicken get there?
The characters were too stereotypical - Alan as this crazy guy who never had had friends before; Phil as the guy who only wanted to party; Stu as this man who was terrorized by his girlfriend and finally starts dating a stripper and Doug.. I'm sorry, but Doug was so boring and unmemorable that there's nothing to say about him.
This movie tried to be everything and it failed.
A Complete History of My Sexual Failures (2008)
Don't waste your time
It's hard to describe how boring this "movie" is. It is supposed to be this really intriguing documentary about this guy who has been dumped by all of his girlfriends, but all this guy really needs to do is look in the mirror and he'll realize why he doesn't have girlfriend. He's thirty something, but dresses and acts like a 17-year-old and doesn't have a proper job. Now what kind of a woman would want to date somebody like that? So there's no need to waste 90 minutes of your life on somebody else's (ego) problems that will be solved when he finally finds a new girlfriend. We all have relationship problems and I bet that most people could make a far more exciting movie about their life than this guy.
The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)
Great acting, bad script
I did not expect anything from this movie and I'm glad I didn't. Otherwise I would be extremely disappointed. Also, I haven't seen the original.
The acting is really good. John Travolta is extremely believable as this really violent and coldblooded maniac who doesn't hesitate to kill the hostages. Denzel Washington does also a great job as Garber, although Travolta definitely steals the show. Travolta and Washington have a good "chemistry" between them and I would definitely want to see more movies with them in the lead.
But the script is bad. Firstly, what's the point of James Gandolfini's character? His NYC major was just plain irritating with his attitude and comments. Okay, maybe you don't care about NYC and all you really want to do is drink cocktails on a tropical island, but there's should be enough humanity in everybody to care about the hostages. Well, he didn't care. Secondly, what's with the coincidences? At the end of the movie when Garber is chasing Ryder he accidentally sees him walking just past him. The bridge is who-knows-how-long and they happen to be in the same place at the same time? I don't think so. Thirdly, Ryder was an intelligent man. No way he would have let Garber just shoot him. So the ending was extremely disappointing. And Garber - okay, he wanted to redeem himself after taking the bribe, but run around in NYC with a gun and chase a homicidal maniac? And lastly, when I read the plot summary, the movie seemed to be about the mysterious way they are going to escape, but there was nothing special there. I kept waiting for some kind of twist that never came. Maybe I'm not used to "simple" films anymore.
Watch it if you are a big fan of Travolta or Washington, but otherwise skip it.
