Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre: The Fifth Passenger (1963)
Cold War Naval Action!
The story is based on a spy at a naval base in Devon, who is leaking secrets to the Russians and who asks another officer, who is one of his closest friends, to help him. This officer offers to help, but quickly comes to realise that his friend is mixed up in something pretty serious! The relationship between the 2 officers gives the story more tension and the way the spy is trailed around London is excellent!
The naval authority's need to find out what secrets have and are being leaked mean they need to get under the skin of the the spy's friend and to this end the pretty "Jane Day" is brought in, to find out what the friend has found out. Her efforts in delaying the friend from leaving her hotel room & returning to his own are graphically described....
A great story, well written and a real page turner! If anyone can get me a copy on video or DVD I should be very grateful!
The Home-Made Car (1963)
Great film-part of my childhood!
I remember this film, which I saw many times, as my late Father sold colour T.V. sets & used to show prospective buyers the sets at our home in Bideford, north Devon. This film has a beautifully simple story, together with the traditional "man gets his girl" at the end! The slow mellowing of the little 10 year old girl from a complete pain in the neck to an enthusiastic helper is a joy to watch. I'd like to find out what happened to all these actors after this film; did they all have careers thereafter? Ironically, the girl next door's original boyfriend, although clearly not a "new man", drives what would be seen today as a truly classic car; an Healy 3 litre! Glad to see him get his just desserts at the end, though! Altogether a truly great film, with an excellent soundtrack.
