Dodgy as Hell, but I haven't had a laugh like this.....well...ever!
2 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film is NOT for people who take things seriously, for those easily offended, for those that complain to 'the authorities' about media at the drop of a hat, or for those that....uhm yeah, you get the drift. Bill Zebub specialises in offensive humour, but not South Park style offensive humour, which tends to cater for mainstream tastes, it's like it's own little niche!

It's like on a diet, eating the things you know you shouldn't gives that much more satisfaction. Well this is the film equivalent. None of those involved are actually racist, but the fact that this kind of comedy is censored by 'the authorities' inspired them to create this movie; an outlet for all those secret, guilty desires to laugh at these kinds of jokes. The ironic thing is that people will laugh at an 'Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman' joke and find it funny (yet not actually consider that those jokes are based on cruel racist stereotypes!) yet scoff at a film like this; calling it 'an abomination' etc etc

The film itself is hilarious...the cops are Nazi soldiers, Christians are downright creepy, the Latin folk tricksters and idiots, the list goes on....you really won't believe that you're actually watching this(but only because this kind of humour is often repressed), but it's done in such a funny way that you can't help but laugh! There are some really inspired moments like all of the scenes in the pizzaria and the two pest exterminators.

I know people are going to condemn me for finding this funny, but *beep* to those people, I enjoyed this movie. I'm not a racist, but I loved this movie...anyway a lot of filmmakers can get away with jokes digging at white people so this is just balancing out the scales! It's intended as a 'guilty pleasure' and I think it completely succeeds...it's a pleasure to watch, but I have to admit I felt a little twinge of guilt laughing at the some of the jokes...

If you don't get exactly what I'm trying to say amidst all my mashed words, just look at the rating I've given it....

Dolla Morte (2006 Video)

Not easy to stomach for many, but worth it if you love offencive humour.
29 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This could easily (and wrongly) be seen as a 'poor man's' Team America, but anybody who watches this and thinks that, is either not actually watching it or not getting the point of this movie! This, before anybody starts slamming it for racism or political criticism, is not poking fun at anybody in particular but everyone! That's the point of a successful 'offencive' comedy...to just offend everyone (a film that chooses to pick on racism as a form of offencive comedy can be seen as nothing more than a sick gesture of hatred against a certain type of people). This film is not one made through sheer hatred for everything, but the desire to make the world more tolerable by taking the *beep* out of it! And to be honest I can't see a more fitting thing to do, since I have seen no proof thus far of the notion that life is actually serious! It just makes it funnier seeing mock ups of Jesus, the Pope and Hitler acting out a bizarre and complex yet surprisingly well thought out, and insanely comic storyline.

It's use and abuse of a few typical Hollywood clichés had me laughing out loud in their deliberately ironic situations, which is made even funnier by the fact that it's played out by action figures (I wet myself laughing at the inspired 'SS Enterprise'). The violence and gore has a potential to be sickening but again is made amusing and entertaining in the circumstances and some of the sequences, you'll just not believe your eyes that these 'innocent' action figures are doing what they are on the screen! The log cabin scene at the beginning springs to mind and a lot of the character's execution scenes, though the barbie dolls on pikes is quite jarring, I have to say. Though, I'll leave it at that so as not to spoil it too much for you.

It's actually quite funny, because for the people that didn't get it, or for the ones who prefer their stories "spoon-fed" and easy to digest there's an explanation at the end (I have to confess that I, myself found this rather helpful for filling in bits that I didn't get...just because I'm quite stupid though...the shame).

I wish I could do this, and Bill Zebub's movies more justice, but my jumbling of words and general blabbering I feel, cannot do them as much service as I would've liked. He shreds (albeit with a machete) the rule book and churns out severely underrated underground films that challenge viewers (in a way that is sadly lacking from an awful lot of films now) to re think what we call entertainment and give the middle finger to all the artists who want to stick to conventions and rules who will always be, due to the current public mentality, unjustifiably more highly classed than this kind of film maker.

Anyway...approach these films (especially Dolla Morte!!) with an incredibly open mind, if you don't...you just won't get it. Serverly entertaining and offencive in all the right ways!

All of his videos except Tainted Love
1 June 2005
As something you get with a 'best of' it isn't far off! All of his videos including the never before seen (s)AINT video and Personal Jesus, his new song. It also has a few hidden features like a couple of 'making of's and this weird 'autopsy' video, which is clearly a take on of the Roswell autopsy from 1995. The main menu screen changes if you return to it after visiting some of the sub menus, which is rather cool. What would have been nice would have been some live footage or a gallery of his paintings or something, but there's only so much you can do on such a DVD. Unfortunately the Tainted Love video isn't there, as mentioned in other comments but it is still a very good collection of videos never the less.

What you talking' about?
11 January 2005
I thought the film was brilliant, fair enough, some things were slightly questionable, but on the whole, the film was great. Oh and Scouser boy, the script is actually a play, written by Thomas Middleton in 1607, so no use complaining coz the guy who wrote it won't be able to hear you!

Christopher Eccleston is brilliant in the lead role, adding a gritty determined and almost sinister touch to the character; Eddie Izzard is wonderfully camp but never the less remains serious throughout the film. It's colourful and fun (the 'footy' match is inspired lunacy)...well apart from the grim storyline. Don't be looking for realism, instead just revel in Alex Cox's artistic approach to modern storytelling and enjoy the film.
