Sadly, I knew people would dislike the movie, ever since the first trailer popped in, and it got all the negative comments.
First of all, about this "white washing": ancient Egyptians were not black. Not white either, but not black. And does it really a problem? Did the performance of Laurence Olivier as Othello (a character who IS black) bothers anyone? No. The director of Gods of Egypt is Alex Proyas, who was born in Egypt. I guess he was well aware of his country's history when he made the casting choices. And he has the right to choose anyone he wants. He is the director. Not the director of a documentary or a drama that's based on a true story. He is the director of a fantasy movie. Yes, the mythology has been around for thousands of years, but it's still a fantasy movie where Horus and other gods exist. None of this happened, so no one should look for historic accuracy. Let's move on.
I felt this movie is like Clash of Titans or Prince of Persia. It's not flawless. It's absolutely forgettable. It's 15 minutes longer than it should be. The CGI (when Horus and Seth transformed) is cartoonish. BUT: It's entertaining! The production design and the cinematography is great! I've always loved the Egyptian myth, and I was glad to see this movie's world was creative and visually great to look at. The music is solid. I liked the actors and their characters. For me, Chadwick Boseman had the best part in the movie. Minor role, but I loved every second of it. And I liked that neither of the main heroes is a comic relief.
Yes, the script was not the best, but I've seen some blockbusters in the past one year (like Mad Max: Fury Road, Furious 7, etc.) that were loved by critics and viewers but had no superior script.
Once again, GODS OF Egypt is not for everyone, but it is for some. I didn't regret I watched it.
