Light & Magic (2022)
Best series about teams and leading
Firstly, I never give a 10 on IMDB. I also usually only leave a review if I think something has been mos-rated by others, and seeing as this almost scores 9 already, giving a review for this is outside my norm... but I just had to give it a 10.
What will draw most people into watch this documentary is Star Wars and the 1970s/1980s nostalgia. And the behind the scenes look at how special effects were done on our favourite science fiction movie is really fun.
What sets this documentary apart is it's insights into what makes a great team and what makes great leadership. As someone who reads books on leadership and has leading roles in two startups I think this surprisingly turns out to be one of the best films I have watched in the topic.
I also found watching this gripping a times, I had to start watching the next episode to see what happens next. That usually only happens in murder suspense documentaries, not a docu about geeks having fun making toys - golddust!
The Kitchen (2023)
Powerful
One of those films we almost skipped because of the low IMDB score, only 4.9 at the time of writing this.
This was a very powerful story of a dustopian near future ghetto. Father with PTSD after a problem upbringing struggling to trust or make bonds, meets a boy through a chance meeting at the funeral service he works at which makes him question who he is and what he wants.
Lots of powerful scenes at points where both the man and the boy seperao have choices to make about who they want to be.
Music was good. And... Ian Wright the legend is the DJ playing the tunes.
I can only presume the haters of this film were after a shallow sci-fi rather than a thought provoker.
Sit back, use your brain cells, this is worth a watch.
White Noise (2022)
How did this get made?
I think I get it, white noise of everyone talking crap and none of it really matters and we are all going to die anyway and even the fear of that is white noise... etc... etc... round and around... OMG.
I watch a lot of films, but this is easily one of the worst I have ever watched. Frustrating. Confusing. Annoying. It is also not an art film which I could excuse for being obtuse.
A couple of almost funny moments mean it deserves its one star, but there is no real character development or feelings for the characters, and it is about 1hr 30 minutes too long. This should have been a 15 minute short film thatigjt have got 4 stars.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Wonderful
I loved this. Such a simple film yet it had strong connections, great acting and real tensions.
Rural Ireland in the 1920's was a land of gossip and talking about the neighbours, in know this because of my ancestry. In a small world with no TV or electricity family is all, friends are important and news travels by talk.
How stories escalate may have parallels to social media, where the world has become small and full of gossip.
The relationship between the two main characters is powerful, perfectly acted, surely there will be Oscars in this,
This is my favourite film of 2022. I hope you enjoy too!
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
Funny
Surprisingly the best comedy film of 2022 so far, absolutely loved it.
Not sure if it would work if you do not know Cage's back catalogue at all but for most movie lovers it will be great fun.
Stillwater (2021)
Very good, better than 6.x rating.
If you are after a real movie with great acting, emotions, tenseness, connections. Watch this. Very good.
I was confused why the score was so low so read some of the lower score reviews.
If you are shallow and comments like "Damon should have been a kick boxer" and "too much french" speak to what you are looking for in a film then maybe this is not for you.
If you are an adult with any level of emotional intelligence, then this film is probably for you.
In the Earth (2021)
Made me hate myself for putting myself through it
Among the worst films I have ever watched. Like a low budget student film that got marked an F.
Meaningless, nonsensicle, poorly acted, terrible trippy scenes with no meaning.
Avoid.
French Exit (2020)
Cute little story
Sit back and let it wash over you. A quirky story of friendships and reflection. Worth more than the 5.9 score when we watched. Some will complain the ending did not close the film but it did, she envisioned it in her first tripnto Paris and how she wished she had died younger having spent all her money Well acted.
The Marksman (2021)
Boring
Wooden acting, terrible dialog, formulaic, boring.
Plot mechanisms where Liam and bad guy coincidentally are at same place same time happened to often.
Worst film I've seen Liam in.
How did this get made.
Finding You (2020)
Absolute rubbish
Had to leave a review as I can't understand how this was rated over 6 and I don't believe the higher scores some people are leaving.
Clichéd nonsense, insulting to the quality and energy of Irish folk music, terrible acting. We were too lazy to turn over but we were fast forwarding through the musical interludes to try and get through it.
2 stars for the Irish scenery.
Dredd (2012)
Dredd
This is Judge Dredd. If you grew up with 2000AD this is heaven in a movie
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Overrated
Took the suspense and drama of the original film and turned to into an over long and poor quality pseudo vampire type film.
Only giving 5 stars because of its proximity to the original story did add some interest.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Loved this
People who have given this low scores are obviously not used to the pace and deadpan humour of other Bill Murray films.
I loved this, the slow pace added to the deadpan laughs.
Only criticism is the actors nodded to the fact the were in a film one time too many (when talking about seeing the script).
