Sword Art Online (2012)
Great first half, unfortunate second half.
First Half: NO SPOILERS.
Sword Art online is a terrifying but beautiful story of a boy names Kirito who is stuck in this virtual video game in which no player can leave until the final boss is defeated. Throughout the game, if one were to be killed, the player would also die in the real world.
In this anime, you never know who is going to die next which keeps the viewers constantly on edge. A character that might have seemed important could be killed at any moment and the fact that those characters actually die in the real world makes the story even more emotional. The story itself is definitely unique and entertaining. The action/fighting is good and the emotions run high in this anime, however, it does have a few flaws.
First off, everything feels rushed in the first half of this anime. In a world that has 100 floors, you only see about 10 of them. To me, I found it annoying to find out that the next episode he had made it 20 floors higher without any explanation. I understand that you can't show him fighting on each floor level, but it could have been more gradual than going from (ex.) floor 20 to floor 47. The first story is completed within 14 episodes and that is it's problem. They do not give enough time for the stories to develop fully. You meet new characters in the beginning of an episode and towards the end of that episode many days have gone by within the anime but truly you've only seen them throughout one episode of 20 minutes, not 2-3 episodes. So when those (not-so) new characters die at the end of the episode where they were first introduced, it doesn't pack the punch it could have had those characters been in the anime longer.
Secondly, SAO lacks Character depth. After watching 14 episodes of Sword Art Online, you know barely anything about the main characters. They still manage to make you like and care for them, but I think that these feelings could have been amplified had we known more about them.
----------- Now for the second half: SPOILERS
The story continues into a new video game in which Kirito enters in order to save his lover Asuna. In this new game if you get killed, you simply respawn. After watching the first half of SAO, this second half right away seems pathetic and childlike. This story focuses on love instead of survival and in my opinion it should have never have been made. They really should have just spent the extra episodes on the first story. This would have fixed the two flaws I pointed out: They could have added more character depth and not made the anime feel as rushed. It's really a shame, because this second half ruins SAO for me.
-------- END SPOILER
All in all, I would highly recommend watching the first 14 episodes of SAO but don't even bother watching anything past that.
Ôran kôkô hosutobu (2006)
Way better than I expected!
This is the silly story of a smart but poor girl by the name of Haruhi that is accepted into a prestigious high-class high school due to her grades. One day she happens to walk into the room where the Host Club takes place (Host Club is a group of good looking men that spend their time pleasing women and making them happy). Haruhi accidentally then breaks a vase and it is decided that she will have to work at the host club to repay her debt (since she can't afford to pay for it).
The thing is the men in the host club don't realize that Haruhi is a girl at first due to her attire and short hair. So basically the story revolves around her working at the host club as a guy trying to repay her debt.
To me, the story seemed somewhat kind of lame but it is the sub-story in each episode that is so interesting and fun to watch. Slowly as the episodes go by, you learn about every character and each one is different with their own special story and personality. At times I'd have to say it's a bit over the top ridiculous but it is a light anime that will get you in a good mood. One thing I was happy about was the ending!
To me this is an anime you watch when you want to be cheered up. It's not something that will get you hooked but you'll find yourself coming back to it every so often for the laughs.
Worth watching!
Chobits (2002)
A light and fun anime with a serious undertone
Chobits was one of the first anime I ever watched (also first manga I ever read) and after watching quite a few other animes, I would still place Chobits in my top 5.
Chobits truly is a cute and fun anime to watch and starts out quite innocent, but the deeper you get into the anime the more serious and intriguing the story gets all while keeping it's cuteness factor through the roof.
I must warn, there are a few 18+ scenes in the anime but they are more silly than sexual.
Chii is probably one of the cutest, innocent characters you'll ever come across in an anime but her back story is a huge mystery and is the main intrigue of the story. All the other characters in the anime have their own interesting personas which makes the anime even more interesting past it's cutesiness.
Overall I would definitely recommend watching Chobits if you are looking for something light and fun with still a good story behind it.
Fate/stay night (2006)
Quite Entertaining!
Fate Stay Night is a very entertaining anime which focuses on the survival of a young guy who, without really wanting it, takes part in this elimination tournament to get The Holy Grail.
To win, each contestant get a servant to help them. These companions are summoned from either the past, present or future and that is one of the most intriguing parts of this anime; finding out who each companion is as most do not reveal their identity until the very end.
Overall the story has a few plot holes in my opinion when it comes to the servants and some of the characters in the story don't seem very realistic, however, the battles are quite fun to watch and the ending managed to get me extremely emotional despite me not truly being attached to any of the characters.
Definitely worth watching!
Erufen rîto (2004)
Such a great anime!
After watching a few great animes (Chobits & Another being among them) I was desperately trying to find one that could match that level in terms of a great story line and entertainment.
Elfen Lied definitely surpassed my level of expectations starting with the first episode. I must say that it is quite gory but in such an entertaining way that instead of being disgusted you get excited and hooked.
A lot of the characters are quite interesting. Elfen Lied encompasses the best of funny, sweet and gruesome characters all in this short anime. And it is easy to get attached to them which makes the story only more heart-wrenching.
My only complaint would be the ending. The anime lost funding and was forced to call it quits after just the first season. This left the ending unfinished and asking for more.
Overall I highly recommend to watch it!
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Went in with low expectations, came out pleasantly surprised!
OK, first off, I have read the book (though it's been a few years ago) and I loved it.
After watching the terrible trailers for this movie and the short clip posted on IMDb, I was honestly not impressed. So when I went to watch the movie in theatres I was honestly very happy with the results.
Obviously not everything was perfect like the book, but the story held together and it was entertaining. What's great is it has a kind of Harry Potter feel to it instead of the dreadful Twillight mood. IMDb just happens to be featuring a clip with the worst acting moment in the movie with the corniest joke.
Overall, entertaining with some good laughs too! I recommend to at least see it once on DVD.
