Tenet (2020)
Great concept, shaky storytelling
A Christopher Nolan slugfest on both sides.
Tenet felt like a better James Bond movie, thrown in some of Nolan's mind-boggling concepts, which had its ups and downs through its 2.5 hours way.
It has a unique main concept, which elaborates slow enough to keep the audience's attention, but then is rushed at the end to give you homework to do if you have the desire to untie it. It may mean a rewatch, or a watching explanation videos, suiting your own interest.
My biggest problem was that I did not feel invested in the story at all. I think this was due to the mistake of the film that even though it is 2.5 hours long, it gives us very little character background, or development. Acting felt OK, with a surprisingly good performance of Robert Pattinson for me. However, most of the character background was spent of the antagonist (glad they did not call him that way...) and his wife, it could not get me invested.
I feel like a rewatch could might increase its value, and understanding the punchline concept fully might have worth it, but the frigid storytelling and some logical errors make me unsure if I have 2.5 hours of my life to give it again.
The Accountant (2016)
Ben Affleck is an accountant
The Accountant takes on many journeys to follow. It apparently tries to have everything in one place - story of a genius, sensitizing for autism, love story, father-son relationship, fierce action scenes, backstory of Ray King (JK Simmons' character), backstory of Dana Cummings (Cynthia AR's character), ins and outs of offshoring and accounting trickery - and falls short in delivery. These storylines have all had the potential and well selected cast to entertain in themselves, but all of them together was just too much for a 2 hr movie. Speaking of casting - Ben Affleck is a one-sided actor, especially for this rather overcomplicated character, for me he was mostly authentic for the coldblooded and professional accountant role.
Kinder des Sturms (2009)
Suppletory concept, mediocre execution
Kinder des Sturms is a movie about the struggle of German people after WWII. The story of a lost child can be easily translated to the society of a whole struggling to redefine themselves, and it is of course a touching human experience as well. German society had been labeled with collective sinfulness for the crimes of the Nazi regime. This movie and common sense suggests that one cannot judge every member of a community by the by the acts of its majority. The movie gives us some parables of its own to address this topic as the story goes on. However, the main storyline was solid and entertaining for most parts, I felt the ending was a bit rushed.
The movie was suppletory for me as it documented a topic, which is awfully rarely discussed. However, I highly embrace the subject and the standpoint of it, I felt that the pacing and rythm of the movie could have been better, and some scenes took more time to understand than I felt would be neccessary.
The Great Wall (2016)
If you watched the trailer, expect no more but no less
The Great Wall amazes with its spectacular effects, both on screen and sound. Usually I do not appreciate 3D movies, but in this case I felt like it worth it.
However, being honest, the storytelling and the story itself had its weaknesses. There were many logical lapses, and for me, many details are still waiting to be answered.
On the other hand, expect decent acting especially from the main characters.
All in all, The Great Wall is a solid popcorn-movie, but I expected a more elaborated unfolding of the legend it tells about.
La La Land (2016)
Play it again Seb
La La Land is a romantic musical, filled with a nostalgic salute to Hollywood's golden age.
The plot is quite simple: two young people trying to achieve their dreams, in the land of dreams. They are filled with passion, and find love in each other.
Do not expect a so called 'girly' movie tho. We follow their arising problems as well as their love. These problems are usually connected with abandoning their big dreams to get a decent life, or as many say it, growing up.
Life happens to drive their ways to different directions, which leads to fulfill their dreams, but also to lose each other.
A couple of times, I felt like I was watching Casablanca. Like in the masterpiece of Michael Curtiz, the two in love have a melody, which wakes the feeling of their dreaming days in them, their love. The lines "We will always have Paris" came to my mind as watching the final minutes, and as they said goodbye to each other with their eyes.
They will always have La La Land.
