Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Not Gritty Enough
This was acted just fine but I didn't learn anything new about Whitney or her family. Naomi lip synched fairly well so I bought that she was Whitney. It seemed like they tried so hard to not show any of her flaws that they really didn't show much character at all. Being gay isn't controversial these days and the time jumps didn't allow for anything really heavy. It didn't even go into her relationship with her daughter. Sure it showed she wanted kids but Bobbi was more a set piece than a child. If I watch a biopic I'd like it to seem like the truth not a glossed over family approved puff piece. Next time dig a little deeper and show the woman warts and all.
Voyagers (2021)
Lord of the Flies in Space
Very slow to get to the predictable action. Decent acting. I wanted to like it more but it all amounted to the same plot as Lord of the Flies. Hard to believe the artificially created babies weren't surgically or genetically altered instead of taking blue medicine. If earth was in such dire need of a new planet the 86 year scouting mission would be too little too late. Thumbs down.
Stowaway (2021)
Fell asleep and didn't miss anything
I fell asleep in the middle and when I woke up the plot hadn't changed. It was a slow pointless plod to a crap ending. The ending was just downright dumb. Three stars for Toni Collette who had to act like she was talking to mission control and it was convincing enough. I don't know why this drivel gets green lit. What a waste of amazing actors.
Peppermint (2018)
Great Action Flick
I liked this movie. Does it contain some cliches? Yup but it does it well. Jennifer Garner pulls off the role. It's better than similar movies with male leads. Critics panned this but I have to wonder what the real reason was because this movie was good.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Awful...bad...terrible...just don't
Did the writers lose a bet? This was garbage. Can't even call it fan service because it stomps on the original movies. Don't waste any time or money on this crap.
Flatliners (2017)
Too many tropes
It's not great but it was the best choice on the slim pickings on Netflix. I much prefer the original movie. I don't know why I keep watching stuff with Ellen Page when she has yet to convey any kind of acting range. Some of the acting wasn't so bad but the story gave them little to work with.
Treadstone (2019)
Anticiapointment
Decent acting and good fight scenes but laughable writing. Security and cops that lack peripheral vision with storm trooper accuracy make scenes that are supposed to be intense ridiculous. Trying to make the plot interesting with multiple time lines just makes it splinter to the point of annoyance. Predictable story makes it very boring. I wanted to like it given I love the Bourne movies but instead my anticipation is now disappointment.
Lost in Space (2018)
Deus ex machina much?
The amount of hand holding and obvious plot points make for a very boring show. The number of problems magically solved was ridiculous. I watched season 1 hoping it would improve but it never got better. I grew tired of the series by episode two this season. Acting was fine but not enough to keep watching. I would rather rewatch other series I actually enjoyed instead of wasting any more time with this one.
The Mummy (2017)
Better than others had said
Was is Oscar winning? Maybe for visual fx but I don't think it was made to be. It was a good film with plenty of action and well timed humour. I don't know why it was hated so much. My husband and I were entertained.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Missing Something
I really wanted this movie to be as good as the last 2 but I was disappointed. There was action but something was missing. The soundtrack was recycled from the instrumentals from the original. I love the John Wick soundtrack almost as much as the movie and this one was blah. Where was the car?? Any muscle car? Motorcycles and horses were just not the same. The dogs were awesome and Halle Berry was spot on but too much attention was given building the story arc rather than making sure it still felt like a John Wick movie. I was entertained but it felt like more of a run of the mill action flick instead of the badass movie it could have been.
Black Mirror (2011)
Wish I could rate each episode
Series started off great. As episodes went on I liked it less and less. White Christmas was amazing. Start there. When you watch expecting a twist its hard to be surprised. Not something you can rewatch since the reveal is the best part.
Ozark (2017)
Laura is brilliant
I love Jason Bateman but Laura Linney is fantastic in this. Great series to binge. Whole cast is amazing.
Downsizing (2017)
Anticipointment
I kept waiting for the good part and just when I thought it was getting there the plot changed. Some great acting and some slivers of humour but there is no big payoff. I have no idea what the point was. I get the environment preaching part but even it trailed off to a "meh" ending. I wonder if too many focus groups ruined this movie?
Mute (2018)
Such a waste of talent
This has a top notch cast and the setting was great but the story is blah. I love Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd usually but even they couldn't save this dry hum-drum script. The costumes and make-up were so good I didn't recognize Robert Sheehan until his last scene without a wig. There were no surprises, no twist and it took forever to get what few points it had. It is pretty bad when the most interesting and likable character is the (suspected) pedophile. I gave it four stars because the actors did the best they could with the crap they were given.
The Prince (2014)
Bad...Really Bad
The storyline has been done so many times it is beyond predictable. Jason Patrick had no edge or mystery the way a character like this should have. Bruce Willis phoned in his performance and John Cusack must have lost a bet to get stuck with this POS of a script. The action scenes reminded me of 1990's arcade shooting games with crappy AI that pops up bad guys up one at a time. The acting was SO bad I started writing this review during the final scene so I could at least be be doing something productive with my time. This movie is so bad it is not even one of those its so bad its good movies. Its just bad.
Sicario (2015)
Would give better rating except for Blunt
This movie was gritty and had great action and story. The male leads were very strong and held the film. I usually like this kind of movie. I enjoyed Narco. The HUGE problem I had was Emily Blunt's character. Even Captain America was never that idealistic and naive. For an experienced law official she was too unbelievable for me to buy into her role. Should have cut her out entirely. The only dumb female movie cliché they didn't have her do was run in the woods with heels on. Would give a nine except for Emily Blunt. Really hope if they make another they leave her out. Why was her character even in the film? HATED her character but normally like Emily Blunt just not this time.
