House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
One of my favorite horror films ever
I was always a fan of Rob Zombies music and I was very excited to see his first feature film. I can easily say I was not disappointed. I loved every second of this film. Most of the horror films that have come out recently are trash. They are made for 13 year old kids and really aren't even scary or horrifying at all. This film, however, takes us back to the better days of horror. It is not only scary and violent, but also keeps a dark sense of humor throughout the entire movie. I loved all of the characters, the score, the script, the death scenes (even though they aren't very gory), etc. It is extremely entertaining. I have read that a lot of people hated it and think that it is just a rip-off of TCM. I don't think that is true at all. You be the judge. I also can't wait to see a directors cut, which I hope comes out soon. The sequel, The Devils Rejects, comes out on July 22nd,2005, and you better believe I'll be there opening night. 10/10
Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000)
Hilarious, gory, and an instant classic
I made the mistake of renting the r-rated version and watching that. I absolutely hated it. There was absolutely no gore! None! And i had heard that this was one of the bloodiest films ever made. I was puzzled. Then, my friend bought the unrated directors cut. I watched it and I absolutely loved it. It was hilarious and was definitely one of the bloodiest films i've seen, right up there with Dead Alive. There was also lots more nudity and sex, including a couple of lesbian sex scenes. The movie starts of with the diaper mafia holding the Tromaville school for the very special hostage. Toxie then gruesomely kills them all, but a bomb goes of and he is taken to another dimension, which is the exact opposite of Tromaville. Toxies evil opposite, the Noxious Offender, is then taken to tromaville, and begins killing all the citizens. The characters are all hilarious, my favorite being Tito the Retarded Rebel. Watch for the two Toxie fetuses fighting the womb with mops, and also the scene in which Toxie is in heaven. Hilarious. 9/10
The Toxic Avenger (1984)
Classic Troma film
Toxic Avenger is definitely Troma's most famous film. It spawned three sequels and a cartoon series called the Toxic Crusaders. It was actually really funny at times with some pretty damn good gore sequences. It is, however, marred by a horrible 80's soundtrack that made me cringe. It would have gotten a an 8/10 if it weren't for the horrible soundtrack. Must definitely get the unrated version though. Contains the classic head-crushing scene. It goes on for to long though in my opinion. Classic Troma, a must-see for Troma fans. The Toxic Avenger IV is far superior though. It contains much, much more gore and is much more funny and the soundtrack kicks ass. 7/10
Buio Omega (1979)
Not what everyone makes it out to be
Being a huge fan of Italian horror, I have been reading up a lot on Beyond the Darkness. I have never seen one of this directors films yet and I have heard that he was very good. Well, I was very disappointed with this film. I read on here that this was truly disgusting and had some of the best gore in a movie. Well, there is definitely not too much gore in the movie, and when there was a killing the gore was not very strong. I have seen so much worse. The scene where Frank embalms his girlfriend lived up to it's reputation though. That WAS disgusting. But the rest of the film was not very gory. But the film dealt with some disturbing subjects so it is still definitely not for all tastes. All together, Beyond the Darkness was an OK horror entry but not very memorable and definitely not a gore classic like some make it out to be. Italian horror fans should check it out but thats about it. 6/10
Cannibal ferox (1981)
Damn good cannibal film
I finally saw Cannibal Ferox, and after reading many reviews on how bad it was compared to Cannibal Holocaust, I was actually very pleased and impressed with this movie. For instance, I just read a review saying that the acting was horrible and that it is only worth it for laughs, that you can't take it seriously. I don't think that the acting was too bad actually, compared to some others in the genre (Eaten Alive), and I think it is very easy to take seriously. I watch lots and lots of horror films, mainly Italian gore films lately, and I thought that Cannibal Ferox was one of the best cannibal films in the sub-genre, underneath only Cannibal Holocaust and maybe Jungle Holocaust(I haven't decided yet). The gore was very realistic and quite disturbing, and you even get a piranha scene, that unfortunately was never filmed for Cannibal Holocaust. I think this is a very memorable cannibal film, especially if you love gore. I give it an 8/10.
La montagna del dio cannibale (1978)
Very good Italian Cannibal film
Mountain of the Cannibal God aka Slave of the Cannibal God is a very good Italian Cannibal film. It has a good cast (no one seemed to annoy me to bad) and some pretty good acting, though i did not really like the score to much. I saw the uncut version so that is the one i will be commenting on. The story is about a woman and her brother who are traveling to the jungle in search of her husband who went missing. Along the way they run into a man who tells them that he knew her husband, and that he was most likely in search of a "cursed" mountain on an island near the jungle. So they set of in search of this mountain, only to find it is inhabited by a tribe of ruthless cannibals. Like most Italian cannibal movies, there are real animals being killed throughout, so if that bothers you, stay away. Most of the gore is saved until the end of the film, and it is also less brutal and gory than most other cannibal films. There is also a very strange mass sex orgy amongst the cannibals, which includes someone having sex with a water buffalo! Almost all of the animal violence and some of the human violence, including the castration scene, were completely ripped off, re-edited, and thrown into Umberto Lenzi's much less effective cannibal movie Eaten Alive. I give Mountain of the Cannibal God a 7/10 for any Italian cannibal fans like myself, but if not, make that a 6/10. I prefer Deodato's far-superior films, Jungle Holocaust and Cannibal Holocaust.
Braindead (1992)
Awesome horror/comedy
Dead Alive aka Brain Dead is by far Peter Jackson's best movie. It is the hilarious and gruesomely gory story of a young man trying to care for his mother, even after she is bitten by a rat monkey and turned into a vicious, blood-thirsty zombie. Funny and disgusting all at once, this is one of my favorite movies ever. Worth it alone for the lawnmower massacre climax! Watch for the scene when he takes the zombie baby to the park. Hilarious!!! Be sure to get the unrated DVD, not the r rated version, because much of the gore is cut out. I would just like to say that Dead Alive is a gore masterpiece, but the violence is done in such an over the top way that it shouldn't be disturbing or offensive. It is definitely a must-own for any horror fans collection. I give it a 10/10
Paura nella città dei morti viventi (1980)
One of Fulci's better films
City of the Living Dead is one of Fulci's four best films (the others being Zombi 2, The Beyond, and House by the Cemetery)but is a bit slower than the others. The story is kind of talky and starts to not make sense towards the end, but has two great gory death scenes and some of the most gruesome looking zombies i've seen. The story is about a girl who sees a vision of a priest committing suicide during a séance. She's then mistaken for dead and buried alive. After she is saved by a reporter (who is one of the most annoying characters ever!), they set off to destroy the priests body so that the dead won't rise on All Saints Day. Meanwhile, zombies who disappear and reappear at will wreak havoc on a small town called Dunwich (in a nod to Lovecraft). The story is a bit silly and some acting isn't too great, but it is an entertaining horror film that plays sort of like a bad acid trip. Recommended for Italian horror fans and Fulci fans. 7/10 for the good death scenes.
Zombi 2 (1979)
This is one of the best zombie films ever made
Zombi 2, which is known as Zombie here in the U.S, is one of the best zombie films I have ever seen. I bought the Shriek Show DVD release and it has an extra disc filled with special features, and the movie looks great and sounds great. The movie follows a young woman and a New York news reporter in search of the woman's missing father. They follow clues to an island where the dead don't stay dead, and have an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Plenty of gore and a pretty good plot, along with a great score make for a great zombie experience. The violence is more extreme than recent zombie movies, which is a big plus. Watch for the eye-splinter scene, which is one of my favorite death scenes ever! I would say this is one of Fulci's best, right underneath the Beyond. Also, Zombi 2 has the best Fulci ending that I can think of. If your looking for a good zombie film but are getting tired of Romero's Dead Trilogy, check out Zombi 2. 8/10
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
The Beyond is Fulci's best
I am a big fan of Fulci and the Italian horror sub-genre, and I would say that the Beyond is Fulci's best, followed by Zombi 2. It starts of with a man known as a warlock named Sweik being crucified and melted with acid in room 36 of a Louisiana hotel. It then moves along to 1981 where a woman inherits that same hotel. Strange things immediately start to happen. This film features plenty of killing and gore, done in the traditional Fulci way. It also has a good story about a hotel built over one of the 7 gates of hell. The story makes more sense than some other Fulci movies and it features the anti-climax ending that most Fulci movies have. All in all, the Beyond is a great horror film with lots of gore (especially the spiders)and a good story. Some of the dubbing isn't too great, but i'm willing to overlook that. I give it a 9/10.
Mangiati vivi! (1980)
Eaten Alive is an OK cannibal film
I have just recently watched Eaten Alive, and being a fan of the Italian sub-genre, i was pretty excited. I ended up being kind of dissapionted. I'll start on the good things. The story was different and interesting. There was a nice amount of gore. There are appearances by a lot of the genre regulars. Now that sounds like it would be a kick ass cannibal movie, but it is plagued by bad acting, and the gore is completely ripped off from earlier Italian cannibal films. It even admits it on the case to the DVD! So, the bottom line is if you've already seen Jungle Holocaust, Cannibal Holocaust, Mountain of the Cannibal God, or Deep River Savages...don't expect anything new. Director Umberto Lenzi went on to make the infamous Cannibal Ferox. Completest should probably check it out, but if thats not you, stay clear! 5/10
Ultimo mondo cannibale (1977)
Jungle Holocaust is a great cannibal film
Jungle Holocaust is a great cannibal film. But not only is it a cannibal film, it is also a jungle adventure, one mans story of survival. This is Ruggero Deodato's first cannibal film, therefore paving the way for the classic Cannibal Holocaust. Like CH, this film is also shunned by many for it's real animal killing and it's realistic human killings. But, it is not only the gore that make this a good film. It also has great direction and stunning visuals in the jungle, plus a good score and pretty good acting. It is a very realistic movie, filmed on location with real natives. Don't get me wrong, the gore is great, too, so if your looking for a movie with realistic gore, i highly recommend this, along with Deodato's next film, Cannibal Holocaust. Check it out if you like Italian cannibal films or if your a Deodato fan. Not for the squeamish. I give it a 8/10.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Cannibal Holocaust is a masterpiece
*** May contain some spoilers *** I am a huge fan of the Italian horror sub-genre of the 70's and 80's and Cannibal Holocaust is one of the best film's to come from that. It is known as the most controversial film of all time and is highly dissed by many for it's disturbing gore, real animal violence, and graphic sexual violence. But this film is one of my favorite horror films ever. Not only because of it's unflinching realism, but also it's stunning direction, good story, and one of the best scores i've ever heard. The film starts of pretty good with Robert Kerman traveling to the jungle in search of a missing documentary team. There he discovers a tribe of cannibals, who have the documentary teams missing footage, which is right with the teams remains! He manages to leave with the footage, which he brings back to New York, and that is when the real show starts. We get to watch the team's footage and see how they met their deaths at the hands of the cannibals. Definitely a shocking film, not for the squeamish or any animal activists. Great movie, I give it a 9/10. The only reason i don't give it a 10/10 is because you can't recommend it to people(at least not normal people). But if your looking for a good cannibal movie, this is the best!
