Absolute Tripe
26 September 2021
If you want a movie about the social liberalism of society, man bashing, taking aim at was once considered good, then this is your movie. Painfully messaging counter culture and immorality. Hey I'm not perfectly moral, but here, everything that is good for many, is now bad, and everything that's bad is put on a pedestal. I am not anti anything, in any real sense, but when you cram every broken, what some call sinful denarii, and make it somehow to be embraced, at the risk of feeling misogynistic if I don't embrace the message. I don't like this kind of manipulation.

I like art films. So what is up here?
4 August 2021
I like art films. I love slow films. So why didn't I like this one. I mean Punch Drunk Love is one of my favorites. Pans Labyrinth, and even Mirror Mask... Great. This one had great actors and great visuals, but seemed very pretentious and agenda driven. I'll admit, I'm still thinking about it, but most of the people leaving the theater were giggling and muttering this was the worst movie ever. I'm not going to go that far, but it did drag, and felt like a short, that was under edited. It had some elements that I feel could have been improved on, shorten the movie, and change some absurd, and unnecessary "shock value" points, and could have been salvaged into a passable movie.

Cats (2019)
9/10
I liked it... for good reason.
3 January 2020
From a guy who likes "Curly Sue" and " Mirror Mask" but also likes "Inception" "Shutter Island" and "Saw" as well.

Like I said on my review of "Curly Sue" I did years ago,we need a bit of silly, nae,,, even stupid, and whimsy.

Would you rather watch another movie about Vampires, or the Fastest fury, or whatever, many times, me too.

I'm glad a stupid, silly singing cat show brought a slight tear to my eye, and healing to my heart.

It's kinda like a mild, PG, hallucinogenic high, mixes with film, about a book of poems, about cats, introducing themselves to a new possible member.

The director, and screen writer actually took some necessary creative direction to the writer, T. S. Elliot's short book. A very cute, and important piece of literature, But it is a kids book, Intellectual Londonite children book from 1939.

P.S. The rating is weird, about 1/5th of people really liked it, but it stays flat until it hits the 1 spot. Most 2.something movies have very low 7 thru 10, generally only 8 out of 10 lie a movie with this low a rating. It's all singin n dancin, so come on....

Joker (I) (2019)

I get tired of over-hyped movies
23 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So many movies have been over-hyped. Like Inception. A great movie, but it was so built up, a slight let down was felt, and as usual the movie fell short of the incredible hype.

Joker is not that. It meets, nae, exceeds the scuttlebutt. If cookie cutter comics are your forte, better come without those glasses on.

This is a way to complete the Joker personality. There is no ambiguity now. He is a chaos loving psychopath. He doesn't love sticking it to the rich, he doesn't even love killing, he loves causing chaos, and stomping on those who garner the famous Joker laugh. Unfortunately, society at large, except a few truly underfoot souls, may be on that list. Riviting in every way.

High marks, for a Hard Chick Flick
18 September 2018
This movie is a chick flick, harder than usual, but still a chic flick. I liked it. It was goofy, funny, slightly suspenseful mystery. It was pretty easy to figure out, and the plot twists were pretty obvious, that didn't make it any less entertaining. I would watch it again, as I'm sure I missed something, and the mostly dry humor, was just the right touch, without feeling overly forced. Many will be thrown by the several twists, I missed the final ending by a technicality, but was close enough for horseshoes. I would have liked a more romantic feel at the end, but they didn't figure a way to tie that in. 9 stars.

What else do you want?
28 August 2017
If it is out of this world, slightly campy, over the top sci-fi your looking for, Valerian is the place for you. If that's not your style, you shouldn't watch or review it. It is Star Wars, meets Avatar, meets the old Muppet movie, The Dark Chrystal. The imagery cannot be overstated. It is over the top, and always present. I find it hard to understand how it didn't cost even more to make. Then there is the biodiversity of 1000 planets. Some creatures are spectacular, others are just kinda like clay creations. Much of the interaction is very humorous. Even with all that, they managed to cast the main characters, who had trouble developing chemistry. It seems very forced most of the time. They manage to hit a stride or two, and occasional hit it off better, but this was the main weakness of this movie. Even their interaction with the supporting cast was unfeeling. I feel Dane Dehaan could have done better with a different costar, but others would have been better. Tatum Channing for example. Maybe Scarlett Johansson could have added some life and experience to the role Cara Delevingne played. She looked like a kid and acts like shes still in college, not ready for prime time action adventure. Even with these shortcomings I found the movie enjoyable. I have to commend the special effects that are so wonderful and spectacular they carry the movie when nothing else does. Kinda like the last 30 minutes of 2001: Space Odyssey does, just in technical watch-ability.

Do you realize how profoundly this movie tries to delve into a misunderstood genius' life. We all (those of us old enough to remember) herd about this fellows antics and almost none of us understood them. (Gasp)! After you see this movie you will see a pattern that in a mans life that if allowed to mature like fine wine, we all would have appreciated. Unfortunately the maturation was cut short by an untimely death. I cry each time I see how genius, as it often occurs, (ie. Heath Ledger, John Balushi) and Mr Kaufman's life are cut short. None of us can comprehend this loss until we see what we missed in the eyes of a beautiful movie like this "Man on the Moon" 10/10

Don't you want excellence!

Warning: Spoilers
Like the Samurai, Tom Cruise gives a risk taking performance that shows his many facets. As much as I would like to hate him, I can't. Watch Eyes wide shut, again if you must, you will see. It is better to see than a run of the mills movie. The twist between east and west runs deep. You can see the balderdash of warrior mentality between Tom Cruise's western, and his samurai counterpart Ken Watanabe's eastern influence. Its almost like a modern man meets the pre 1900's Samuria warrior. Am I the only one who caught this? He develops the annihilation of the American Indian to the diminishing samurai. The movie even illustrates the differences. If America was smaller the the honor of the Indian probably would of coalesced into a more cohesive unit. With the Indian honor and family unit we would be negotiating with a totally different people from England, Spain, France, etc...I think the Samurai and American Indians would help make a simpler better world. We don't live forever. Better to die a Good Death?

Interesting twist of fate!
8 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It is customary for children of fathers who abandon them later refuse any advances the father makes in their adulthood. This film efficiently works with those emotions. Also amazing about this film is the fact that the unknown actors in this film carry the role like they are in a documentary.

The plot builds as the son is violently pushing away his father. At the same time a rival attacks the son. The father is forced back into the fray.

The final twist comes when, as the struggle ensues, the father tries to stop it, and when he can't, he decides to make a parental sacrifice that makes the son realize, that even though he was abandoned, ultimately blood is thicker than water.

Curly Sue (1991)
9/10
This is a light show that is heartwarming and funny.
11 March 2007
With all thats going on in the world sometimes we need an escape. Curly Sue is just that. Not a complicated plot or deep meaning; however it is not devoid of substance. There is more than furious action or heart pounding dramas. There are the charming little shows you can watch with your kids and have enough substance to enjoy with your date. Try it you may like it more than you think. The little girl is really smart and cute. The "Dad" and the girl go thru some slapstick routines. When a jealous boyfriend steps in, trouble brews for Curly and the life shes known may be torn asunder. Fred Thompson and Kelly Lynch play good roles as the upper crust and Alison Porter and James Belushi are a interesting fable like duo portraying street wise homeless drifters. Their worlds collide and comedy ensues.

I gave it a 10 anyway
4 December 2006
This is definitely not the heart shattering statement that the Passion of Christ was but is a great show in its own way. It may not be a 10 but I gave it that grade to offset all the people who bashed it because it runs afoul with their liberal thinking. This show was more sublime and very life like to the era. The scenes were authentic, Mary was humble, the life visualization was realistic, and the wise men were very humorous. The movie was a little choppy here and there but was perfect for the season. Oh by the way, it is OK to make a profit telling Jesus' story. He did not want us to live in poverty. It's how you handle money that makes a difference.

Clowns drink till they puke and hate Mimes. You will love this show if your a drunk or doper. Most others will TOO!
4 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has an All Star cast, (or at least a lot of them)Adam Sandler, Robin Williams, Florence Henderson, & LaWanda Page (aunt Ester from Sanford and Son). A stark look at alcoholism through the loopy eyes of rouge clowns. They drink and carouse, drive strange clown cars, and close down "The Twisted Balloon" bar every night. No one as well as Shakes (Bobcat Goldthwait). He wakes up every morning puking but he doesn't have a problem because and can quit when he wants. He just doesn't because he has a lot of fun drinking. He gets fired drinking at a kids party and going nuts (a very funny scene). There are so many zany one liners in this movie. Like when the bar fly lady Aunt ester says "As soon as that camera is off, he gonna f*** that little dog." after Peppy the Clown announces his (forced) retirement from the clown kids TV show. He's all crying and announcing his replacement "Binky" the biggest piece of crap in clown land. Shake thought he was going to get the TV show, guess not. At the bar one of Binkies cronies tells Shakes "Oh, yeah? Well, the only show YOU could ever star in would be a show called the... Not... Funny... DIARRHEA CLUB!" Later Binky frames Shakes for killing Owen Cheese, Shakes boss and father figure (after Shakes dad died in that elephant mishap) Owen finds Binky and a couple of dope dealing rodeo clowns snorting coke and Binky gives a funny line-"You didn't see nothing old man. We're just five happy party clowns, sitting down to a plate of beef. White- powdery- beef." The rest of the show is about Shakes figuring out he did not kill his boss (he was so drunk he didn't know) then finally finding redemption at a 12 step program. This show is hard to watch for people who can't understand addiction, especially when its twisted into a whimsical very dark comedy. Very unique, nothing else even close to like it!

Refreshing and Haunting
13 January 2006
What can be said about a brilliant concept. It takes on a darker more political angle than say Forrest Gump but is similar in some ways. It also is a great show to watch if you want to win friends. Obviously people want to hear themselves talk more and others less. Peter Sellers character reveals this quality in people. They are so interested in what they want to say or hear or think, they confuse his simpleton for brilliance. One of the funniest dark comedies ever made. I call it a dark comedy even though its very refreshing at times and has a jaw-dropping, scratch your head ending. People I've shown it to, even those who did not like it as much as me, sat on the edge of their seat and did not so much as go to the bathroom. The 2nd watch you will catch on to the cleverness and deeper meaning of this film. As well as being even funnier the 2nd or 3rd time around.
