Interceptor (2022)
Fun 'Under Seige' type movie.
No idea why people are dissing this so much. It's a fun action movie. You know who will win, just enjoy the ride. There's a couple of dumb plot holes but honestly, it's a fun enough ride you don't care.
It's reminiscent of Segal's Under Seige, but on a military sea rig and roles are reversed - the woman is capable and the guy the support but it's done well and isn't done with an overt agenda that might annoy some. There's some genuine tense moments, some great fight scenes and the characters are filled out enough you find yourself routing for the heroine and booing the baddies.
The thing that annoyed me the most was the cameo from Chris Hemsworth - silly and unnecessary (film loses a point for this). Other than that, grab the popcorn, switch off your critical brain and have fun.
Downrange (2017)
Laughed so much. Shouted in disbelief too.
I laughed more in this movie than many comedies I've seen. My friend and I were entertained but for all the wrong reasons.
Worth watching until the end as it gets more ridiculous as it goes on.
I've given it 3 stars for this laughter. I wish I could see some extras of the director directing the actors because their acting abilities and display of emotions during some scenes was so appalling. It's like somebody gave a bad amateur dramatic society some money to make a film.
The end credit music and credits themselves were the most professional part.
Better Watch Out (2016)
Poor story, poor horror with WTF attitude towards women
Its not a great film and a bit of a let down if you are after a horror or after anything remotely like the film the trailer suggests (OK...trailers sometimes have to be avoid giving the game away). Additionally the lead actor, one of the 12 year old boys, doesn't really convince. I can't say anymore without giving the story away.
My real problem with this film is that the filmmakers apparently think its OK (spoiler coming) to show two 12 years old tie a woman up and fondle her. Its a brief scene but that's not the point. If this were a true horror or thriller showing debasement and trying to demonstrate some kind of descent of social morals etc like The Clockwork Orange then it would work within the confines of the script. But this is not that kind of film in any shape or form and the audience is likely to in the region of 12 upwards (its a 15 certificate in the UK but since when has that stopped younger viewers?). This is marketed as a teenage Christmas 'horror' Home Alone. In effect this film seems to show that its OK and reasonable for 12 year old boys to molest women. In 2017? No. I was appalled this was allowed. It wasn't just me. In the small audience I heard the surprise of others and someone utter an incredulous 'wtf?' which was pretty much what I was thinking.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Tense ride that's well executed and even manages genuine emotion.
This is one of the best zombie/virus outbreak movies ever made. The tension is palpable and builds throughout. By the end I was feeling like I had been running/panicking along with the characters.
During the whole movie there was a perfect balance between the terror and panic, and the fear and distress and emotion that would come with such occurrences. At many points the execution of the zombies and how they move, react, attack was superbly directed and felt far more professional and well thought out that many U.S. movies that churn out the crap rubbish. Often in these kind of movies something happens which breaks you out of your watching because you think 'that wouldn't happen' or 'that's not realistic'. I don't think I thought that once during the whole movie.
By the end I had a tear in my eye (as did the person I saw it with) - I won't say anymore other than the writer, director, crew, actors, all deserve a round of applause for a fantastic effort.
I would suggest that zombie and horror movie lovers in the West DON'T WATCH THE U.S. TRAILER as it reveals too much - it won't ruin the film, but some of the scenes are really great and would be better as a surprise.
