War, Inc. (2008)
A satirical view of today...
A satirical view of today's world. A movie which allows you for once to step back and take a look at our world from the outside. Things might not seem so right and correct. Successfully points out some of the most typical features of western society which we have turned out to be accustomed to. Even though it proposes a quite fictional view of the American role in the world, showing a country ruled by the Us in a sort of parallel world controlled through cameras and secret services. Somehoe reminds of Orwell's 1984 or Huxley's A brave new world. The story is not very involving sometimes turns out to be a bit hard to follow and some scenes seem to be just useless and inappropriate, while the acting is good, the main actors have done a good job. A the soundtrack is often fitting in the scenes, contrasting, adding some irony to the story. In all a pleasant movie good to watch.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
Not really what i expected ... but anyways beautiful
I always heard people talk about this musical and thought i simply HAD to see it. The songs and the choreography are really terrific!I loved Judas's song (Jesus Christ Superstar)when he asks Jesus why he had chosen such a "backward time" and not the modern days with our "mass communication" and also Jesus's prayer on the mountain I found beautiful shows his human side.
The musical is definitely in contrast to Jesus's time but it's a modern view of his life which somehow brings him closer to our days without loosing the meaning of his message. The scenes and the environment chosen is really simple but in the whole perfect for the film: not too many elements that could distract the viewer but just the right symbols to create the atmosphere.
Even though I found the movie beautiful as a musical I did find it lacked something. First of all I was quite disappointed that Jesus's character wasn't emphasized as it should have been. His teachings are not really a central part of the play (which I thought should have been since they are the main issue of his life).
What instead is more emphasized is the role of Judas which has been interpreted in a different way than it is traditionally. He is described more human, as each one of us. And is redeemed from the accusations he has been subjected to through history. His doubts are our doubts i guess he is the expression of modern man's doubts on Jesus's character: he sees Jesus's greatness, sees the importance of his teachings but then does not understand all his decisions and thinks he knows better. I believe that Jesus role should have been deepened more: the sense of his life, the meaning of his death etc. or at least an attempt to answer Judas's doubts should have been made without it Jesus's character seems empty. It is true at the beginning, the film is presented as an interpretation of Jesus as a man " if you could only separate the myth from the man" but I find it is not a neutral nor a complete story of his life. He was a man that's true but those who do not believe he was he son of God cannot deny that he was seen that way by many in his time, both the divine and human side are part of him even as an historical figure excluding one side would mean tell an incomplete story.
There are also many anachronistic elements. The reason could be that this story, of Jesus as a superstar could be placed in todays world too. This story is not just about Jesus but also about glory and fame, of its importance and it's poor value since it can be easily lost and even transformed into hate, those who were once his fans then turn him down. Even though I do not share most of the opinions expressed in this film I truly enjoyed watching it. It is really a piece of art and surely worth seeing.
Man About Town (2006)
simply loved it
i wouldn't have thought i would like it so much, just thought it would be another of those usual comedies. But i was wrong it turned out to contain a real message and not a watch just-for-fun movie. The story of Jack's life from his point of view, with his problems ,doubts and difficulties, the fact that at one point he feels so lost that he does not know anymore where his life is aiming to,his need of understanding who he is, are all things that makes us know him personally not as a successful talent agent as he is presented at the start.Through the story we see how there is so much of him that is common in the rest of the characters... but wait a second it is common to us all too! As Jack says close to the end " we are all imperfect". Which justifies the need of forgiveness. No matter the importance of the message there are quite fun moments which still remind us we are watching a comedy movie but also sad and dramatic moments. It is actually a mixture of genres; for all tastes. Action (chinatown), drama, romance, comedy and a bit of suspense. The acting was good Dr.Prinkin was the most amusing even though the most enthralling scenes were the ones with Jack and Nina.If some of you is looking for a light movie not wanting to waste his time on the usual comedies pick this movie!
Marie Antoinette (2006)
good entertainer but not really an historical movie
nice movie. but if you'r hoping to learn something about the French revolution this is not the movie for you(unless you are satisfied with general information). It does though depict quite clearly and efficiently, in my point of view, the inability of both Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI in ruling the county the first for her young age and the other probably for not understanding the needs of his country. Some details turn out to be quite anachronistic the colors of the clothes, some behaviors and Marie Antoinette who appears like a modern teenager. Anyways the costumes and the scenography are surely worth seeing. Apt for teenagers who get easily bored by watching serious biographies!
