The Forest (1982)
Entertaining horror movie
No, this movie is not one of the best horror movies to come out of the eighties but it does have some great qualities. I found the storyline rather refreshing, it was different from any "in the forest" horror movie I've ever seen. And as cheesy as the soundtrack was, it still was interesting... but hey, I even like the cheese factor! I admit the beginning of the movie was pointless, but still, it was great to laugh at. I'd recommend this movie to any horror fan but you must also not expect too much from it, I mean, it's no Halloween or Friday the 13th, but it is enjoyable. There were times I felt spooked and times I just wanted to laugh. A great combination!
Winter Lily (2000)
A pleasing thriller
This movie is pretty good throughout, but it's the ending that's really cool; it's how a thriller should end. The setting and cast are also great assets to the film, especially Danny Gilmore, NICE! I did find a few lame parts to the film though, such as Clive's "connection" to Lily, I'm not exactly sure where that came from. As an interesting film I give it a 6 out of 10, but add a great ending and I give it a 7. I'm not sure why it's considered a horror film though. It does have an eerie feel to it, but if you're looking for gore, there's not much here. Not that that's a bad thing, I think the coldness and eeriness do it justice. A twisted thriller? Yes. Horror? Not really.
Yellowknife (2002)
An interesting film
This is the kind of movie that grows on you. I wasn't too sure of how I felt about this movie after just having watched it, but as I later reflected on the film, I found myself looking forward to the opportunity of when I could see it again. It appears to be ladened with overtones, so a second watch is probably a good idea anyway. I particularly liked Sebastien Huberdeau's performance, and look forward to seeing him again in future films. All the characters are rather intriguing, and it was great seeing Patsy Gallant, especially hearing that wonderful voice of hers. The director's subtle presentation of incest and other abnormal forms of sexuality also deserves a mention, along with the out-of-the-ordinary ending that will surely please viewers looking for an out-of-the-ordinary film.
