Pegasus: Pony with a Broken Wing (2019)
cringe
Now, if you view this movie like some low budget homework project of a group of high school students and set your expectations really, really low, you might be sympathetic enough and not mind the cringe-worthiness of the whole experience.
My kids, 11 and 12 laughed hard at the silliness of the story and comical special effects. The acting was not totally bad though, on amateur level of course. If this movie took more than 2 weeks to film and more than a few hundred bucks of budget, then somebody was seriously ripped of for the production.
Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
Overload - Lynch has fun & shows a middle finger to the average viewer
I can not give an objective review, as I practically grew up with the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. It would be impossible for me not to follow and see where the story goes in the new episodes. Overload would be the single word if I would have to summarise the first few episodes of the new series. Overload of new characters, places, plots, surreal and gruesome scenes. Overload of nostalgia and reflection. Lynch plays and tests the patience of the (average) viewer with an onslaught of disturbing, odd and seemingly totally unrelated events. If you manage to weather the magician's distractions, you will be rewarded by genuinely (dark, bitter and wicked) humorous and haunting moments, twists and turns which again are not trying to appease the average viewers sensibilities. The new episodes will not become an overnight popular sensation like the first season, but they will surely achieve a cult status. The question remains how all those loose strings of different parallel plots will eventually be tied together?! Knowing Lynch, they WILL form a picture, a dreamlike, unforgettable glimpse into the terrible and wonderful hidden world where souls live. Shadow, take me down...
Arthur Christmas (2011)
a rather sad movie ... *not for families with preteen kids
Expecting a "lighthearted Christmas movie for the whole family" I was unpleasantly surprised after seeing this movie. I would call it instead "a desperate soul-searching for adults overwhelmed by the increasing complexity, inhumanity, vanity, selfishness and illusory nature of the world we live in". The movie has definitively good, sharp and intelligent humor, but the basic story is suited for late teens and above at best. I was squirming in the seat with guilt after seeing the confused face of my 5 year old while he was struggling to decipher what was going on on the screen. For those old enough to understand the story, it's quite far from an idyllic Christmas tale. In fact, this movie is best for people who lost their faith in Santa, and sincere generosity long, long time ago (ie. adults), they will have a good laugh or two and will be probably somewhat touched by the message of this movie...
Knowing (2009)
Worth watching, although it could have been better
Nowadays, it seems that the attention threshold for the average movie viewer is so high, that directors think they need to rip planets apart in order to be noticed by a wider audience. The movie is without doubt dynamic, with lots of good special effects and tense moments which will grab your attention until the end. But it has some usual Hollywood clichés: over-dramatization and shallow and unrealistic characters (Who writes those silly characters anyway?). The scientific background is mainly credible, there are no screaming misconceptions, like in other modern "doomsday" movies. Of course, there are many strong fantasy elements, which can be hardly called scientific, but make the story interesting. I was left with the impression, that with so much effort, money and good actors in this movie, it could have been much better.(like the 90% of other Hollywood production today). With just a bit more intelligent storytelling, it would be probably harder to understand for "the masses", but it could be a great movie. Instead of that, it has a somewhat mediocre feel about it, although a few memorable scenes and interesting ideas make it definitively worth watching.
The Fountain (2006)
beautiful movie , a potential killer - slightly spoiled by melodrama
I made the mistake and read about this movie on IMDb before watching it actually, and had higher expectations. Although I was not completely disappointed, I had a feeling that it could be a killer movie if it was slightly less over-dramatized and more subtle in storytelling. The film has some memorable, haunting moments with beautiful visuals, and some unnecessary nearly-pathetic twists which spoiled the overall feeling for me.
The main theme of the movie is the inner struggle of a man with the idea of mortality, and a spiritual voyage towards the affirmation of life through accepting death. The story is told in three threads. It captures the viewer's attention with unusual settings (a Conquistador in Mayan world, and a translucent sphere floating among stars - I would not call it a spaceship as it is often described by reviewers here, but more like a depiction of the voyage trough the inner universe of the main character. This is the most fascinating scene in the movie in my opinion.) The movie switches between these two "fictional" worlds and the third "real" world of a doctor and his wife (although I think it is futile to discuss which one is the "reality" because this is absolutely irrelevant for the main theme and message of the movie). There are a few interestingly depicted archetypal images (man trying to conquer death for his queen, tree of life, death giving life). Initially the warmness of the relation of the doctor and his wife contrast nicely the odd and surreal feeling of other two realms, but then it suddenly veers in to a melodrama. This distraction is not enough to ruin the movie though, and it still remains a remarkable piece of cinematography. It should be viewed more than one time, and for the first time, if possible with someone close to you. Not recommended for impatient/instant fun and action/instant answers/must be happy end/is this real or not/ types.
