Vietnam: Fast Forward (2021)
Find your Passion and Seize It!
An enlightening and beautiful documentary, showcasing various individuals' struggles in order to create the lives they've always wanted. It truly is remarkable how far the country has come since its independence. And that want for freedom continues to push people to find their passion, eventually to become entrepreneurs, to create jobs and inspire innovation. A truly feel-good film with hope for the future. Not to mention the beautiful drone footage that presents the overwhelming beauty of the country of Vietnam. I LOVED the doctor-turned-farmer, Chef Tan. What a character. The film presents an enlightening message to protect the things we have, and to give back to our earth so that we can benefit for generations to come. Would recommend this to EVERYONE!
Side note: Watched this with my father, who was a flight surgeon in the Vietnam War. He traveled to Vietnam in 2019, and absolutely loved his experience there.
Back to Berlin (2018)
Unique Perspective on History - Brought to Tears
Immediately hooked. Wonderfully told. I love the paralleled timelines -- in one we learn the routes and ways in which the Nazis brought the Jews to slaughter, and in another we learn of the Maccabiah Riders, as the group of bikers mimic the roads traveled, experiencing and seeing with their own eyes the evil destruction of the past. The archival footage is interwoven seamlessly as the survival stories of these bikers and their families are slowly peeled and revealed. What a triumphant comeback to be able to light that Maccabiah torch in Berlin! An important film. Would recommend to all.
Are You Glad I'm Here (2018)
Gripping from beginning to end
I wasn't sure what to expect, but the story was rich, showcasing incredible acting and beautiful shooting locations. It had such a raw, organic, authentic feel that it kept me on my toes, and I loved going along for the ride. Definitely nail-biting once Pierre comes into the picture. It was intriguing to see how Noor directed the scene where we are introduced to Pierre. This film delves into societal pressures, alcoholism and violence. and a clash between western and eastern cultures. I would definitely recommend this film!
I Am Shakespeare: The Henry Green Story (2017)
Life Can Change in an Instant
A beautifully reflective piece with raw emotion and deep self-analysis. The camera showcases practically only Henry Green, and we hear his profound monologue. He tells us the pressures he and his peers faced on a daily basis growing up in Newhallville, a town nearby to Yale University. The personal account from Henry showcases various ironies, and how one's circumstances can change in an instant. Life is strange, and terrible events can turn on their heads to create great things. Reflection is key in understanding how to progress and strive for better. Eye-opening!
The Stand Up Doll (2019)
A Heartache, but Beautifully Uplifting
A beautiful story about the resilience of humans, or perhaps one in particular. This film was so relatable to me as a musician and as someone who has heard her family's first account stories of surviving the Holocaust. I love how Risa's story was told, and how the imagery used relays the beauty that constantly surrounding us, if we just remember to look and notice. Risa Inglefeld, who this story is about, has seen more than anyone, and has experienced such sadness, but she continues to defy the odds and overcome her troubles through humor and finding companionship. This story also touches on transgenerational trauma as well as the pressures of gender norms. I understand Risa's feelings about Vienna; it is such a beautiful city, but haunted with its history. I am so happy that Risa's story has been told. It brought me to tears.
Mandao Returns (2020)
Fun and Entertaining World to Experience
Lover of sci-fi here! What a hilarious trio that keeps you entertained and keeps you guessing. I loved the plot and how it unfolded with a twist I was not expecting. I absolutely love Jackson. All in all, it's a really fun world to be a part of for 71 minutes. Recommend for sure!
The Berlin Bride (2019)
Hauntingly Beautiful Story of Desperate Love
What an interesting vision of Berlin in what seems like the 80s. Each shot, from the first to the last, was unique to the film's vision. I absolutely love the haunting soundtrack, with gorgeous violin lines throughout. What grace we see in both the music as well as the visuals of all of the hands that make up this story. There is a beautiful blend throughout the film of non-diegetic sound that becomes diegetic. This is done seamlessly. Amazing job throughout!!
