Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Seriously superficial- perfect for America
Granted I have only watch the Croatia episode in season 6 but that was enough. There is zero content about the actual food. No historical background about the origins of the food. No content showing the preparation of the food. Nothing about the history of the country or the areas visited. The opening sequence of images are of Vukovar in the 90s. Then towards the end there's a video call with a friend who tells a joke completely unrelated to anything on the trip. Absolutely horrendous programming. I feel sorry for all the Croats that had to demean themselves to be part of this episode. There is so much more to the country but unfortunately foreign tourist with a list of trip advisor's top 5 of everything are plentiful and this farcical show is a metaphor for this perpetual anomaly. It would be better to watch with the sound off.
Jbg.
Canary (2018)
Great nostalgia of a horrible time
The only problem with this movie is that the English subtitles will never do justice to the expressive dialogue in the Afrikaans language and the culture of the Afrikaans dominated defense force of the time.
A rare insight into the internal dilemma of a young man, from a small town with big city ideas, forced into a situation (conscription to the armed forces) and finding that he is not alone.
Ad Astra (2019)
Poor attempt at the future
Basically a remake of Apocalypse Now in space. From the voice over scenes to the fatalistic story line.
