Shades of Metropolis
12 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After having seen the film I found that Mr. Blomkamp has re-found certain themes from Metropolis (1927) (not so much in the details) but in the spirit of his film. The feel of his Earth scenes had that sense of reality where an overpopulated and depleted earth "below" serves a workshop for the "prodigously rich" who live in a "ideal" environment "above". Humanity has certainly had such societies in the past (the Third Reich or more recently white South Africa) and we well may have them in the future.

Both films try to describe a world where revolt is constantly simmering and violence and repression are both open and extreme.

The themes of "overworld" (rich) and "underworld" (poor) are linked with the use of one man's life story but the resolution of both films lacks the reality of what the "real" resolution of such conflict would be like within the context of both this film and Metropolis (that is not peaceful sharing but violent destruction as for the Third Reich).

There are no doubt also echos of the origins of Mr. Blomkamp (South Africa) in the choice of "everyone becomes a citizen" as a resolution to such a conflict.

I find his telling of this version of societies based on one group's exploitation of another very well made and I vote 8 out of 10.

A virtually unknown history
28 February 2006
I found this documentary incredible. This is information that is almost never mentioned in any of the "religions of the book". Not only Catholic, but also Protestant, and even Muslim.

Here the history of the "construction" of the Bible (New Testament) is investigated. Several "refused" gospels are described and even certain gospels not in the official New Testament but which are found in certain Eithiopian or Marionite Catholic bibles. There is even a "refused" gospel that is found in the Muslim Koran.

I found the explanations clear and well commented. A very good documentary that I first saw on the History Channel in the USA.

I recommend it highly to those who are interested in the origins of religions and the "process" of how a "offical" religion gets built.

Classic French comedy with brilliant timing
12 February 2006
Pierre Richard at his best. The movie has both verbal and slapstick comedy scenes which are some of his best. Mireille Darc when she turns her back to hapless Pierre. The dead bodies everywhere (including the refrigerator). A great comedy if you can understand the French.

Now finally available in a collected set of DVDs

"Coffret Le Grand blond - 2 DVD Le Grand blond avec une chaussure noire - Le Retour du grand blond De Yves Robert Avec Pierre Richard, Jean Rochefort, Mireille Darc DVD Zone 2 - Pal. 2 volumes"

But for the English speakers - you may have to check out the Web to find some subtitles - product available from www.FNAC.com in France.

A "peblum" worth your time
27 October 2005
Great for the atmosphere of Ancient Egypt. Storyline lacks believability but acting not bad. The contrasting spiritual journeys of the Pharoah (old gods to monotheism) and the physician (old gods to atheism) works somewhat but film's emphasis only on physician's spiritual journey - the Pharoahs spiritual development is not described as well. Philip Glass wrote an opera on the same Pharoah - if they every tried a remake - his music should fit a "revised" plot with more emphasis on the Pharoah's development. Another missing element is of course the conflict with the Hittites. This is a "peblum" without the "cast of thousands" and very short of the "spectacle" effect of battles, etc. found in equivalent films (e.g. Gladiator). No "clash of civilizations" but a more personal history. A C+ for the decor and atmosphere.
