Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story (2003)
I just don't understand.
How is being homeless a disadvantage? I can understand the feeling of social outcast, but I think that is norm in today's society. They make it out to be that the main focus in life is money. I can understand wanting to achieve things when you're brought up in an environment where your "guardians" supposedly are the worst kind of people. This movie honestly just makes me want to vomit in how it views success and how it views possibilities and goals and hope in general. It makes it seem hope is something that you can find through hard work and going to college or writing a piece of literature about yourself that frankly isn't that original. If you want some good autobiography work check out... James Frey (even if bits are fictional he's a hell of a writer), Running with Scissors (not the movie, the book), Kerouac (I think in every piece of his work he has parts that are drawn from his live) or just something effing else
La meglio gioventù (2003)
my favorite Italian flick
i thought it might be bad since it was rated top 10 films by NY times and most of the people that write for that don't know anything about what they are talking about especially with films.
however it was not half bad. the acting and the intense action (its a drama with a lot of things going on).
i gave it a 9 because it is somewhat of a stereotypical overplayed plot where the characters are pretty unique however and well performed by the actors.
watch it and understand. and check my other reviews for good movies. and bla bla bla you have to write 10 lines which is awfully silly and i like to not waste people's time bla bla bla
Fishing with John (1991)
B+ my arse
John Lurie is hilarious in this movie. The fact that he got managed to get money to make this movie is amazing. But I am ever so glad he did.
When you watch this movie you will see Thailand, Costa Rica, Maine and Willam Defoe with delirium. It'll make you laugh pretty hardy style. The scenes are gorgeous.
Good to watch in the middle of the day. By yourself, with your friends, no matter it'll entertain you by itself. And when you get it don't think you'll be able to watch just one of them. Oh no, you'll have a craving.
As most of the movies I give my premium ratings. It must have originality. And if you cannot dig this. Do not read any of my other comments. I repeat. Do nottt do it.
Y tu mamá también (2001)
been a while since i saw the movie but...heres my two sense hah
gael garcia is as wonderful in this as his later road trip as Ernesto Guevara. It captures what life can be coming up in any household. No borders for anyone. You can make things happen.
I don't remember the whole plot. But if you buy the movie there's a wonderful short film that goes along with it. Another reason I rate this a 10. The short film is one of a kind. The humor is originally displayed. I've never seen it displayed this way in especially from another culture.
I do remember a scene where I cried in the movie. I'm not a pansy neither. I never cry unless a piece of art moves me enough.
The scene was touching and I won't tell you what it was. I will just assume it will happen to you. And I hope it will.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005)
makes daniel johnston look like god
You will be entertained. The story of Daniel Johnston is a heroic and tragic story. I haven't laughed so hard all this month.
It will tell you stories of Daniel taking the key out of the ignition of a airplane thousands of feet in there and throwing it out the window and being proud of himself. Or of his trip to New York where he hangs out with Sonic Youth and scares the bajesus out of many people.
It will take you into the lives of people and show you all the humor, fun, and a little bit of sadness.
In a lot of movies you can't wait for it to resolve. This one you don't want it to resolve because you want more and more of it.
The only reason I gave it a 9 was because 10 means must own. This movie I think you can watch it one time and remember it well. Though you might want to rewatch parts just to brighten your day.
Thank You for Smoking (2005)
boring at parts, questionable message, but decent
The main character Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) put on a wonderful performance. However the movie had some questionable turns and boring moments where nothing was being done.
I suggest renting it when you really have no other movie to rent. Watch it with a friend and when the Aaron goes see the Marlboro man just turn down the volume and chat it up with the friend because it's one of the most silly things I've ever seen in a plot. It's like they threw it in there to take up time.
See the movie if you want to see Aaron Eckhart lay down some facts and tell his son and other kids that they need not to be sheep. Simply stated.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
mere entertainment
I never bothered to watch the first one. Quentin Tarantino is overrated. There's not much to say besides that. He's admired by a lot of people who enjoy and watch good movies. But don't be mistaken. Every movie he makes is almost a repeat of the one before it. Just changing small minute character details. And just like that a new movie is just released.
Pulp Fiction. Not a bad movie because of all the good actors in it. Other than that not that great of a movie. It's hard to mess up a movie about a drug dealer, an overdose, and multiple characters that are all very action-packed. See Pulp Fiction if you want. It's not something you need to own. Don't see any of his other films. Not saying he's a bad guy, just saying he's not a great artist.
Trainspotting (1996)
first you trimmer, second time you do something
its a feel bad, then you'll feel good movie of the year. hell of a couple years i imagine. great movie, great culture, some bizarre surrealism that has unexpected/hidden meanings. realistic in the drug aspect. doesn't play around.
a lot of drug movies are either great or horrible because you can either pull it off and its wonderful because its so hard to pull off or you cant and it looks like poop but the prohibit the word.
this is right up there with basketball diaries (with mr. leonardo : one of his early films), kids (gus van sant produced it, another ny movie), and if you could consider it a drug movie...a home at the end of the world (colin ferell sp? does an amazing job oddly enough) i think it passes most
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
Wes doesn't let us down
Wes Anderson is a director above all in the 21st century. Bill Murray is just an extra hit in each of the movies. They make a great team just like Owen and Luke.
It has Sigur Ros in it, too. For all you fans.
There's parts where you're ready for it to pick up but other then that. Its a Bill Murray hit, too. You mix a man who can play depression like he goes through it every second of his life. His drinking and smoking is timeless. This classy movie is a hit.
I'll be sure to get it the first day it comes out. It's one you need in your collection without a doubt.
Oh, and check my other reviews for other suggestions if need be.
How High (2001)
its not bad
The guy that bashes this so much has no clue what its about. He claims its another black/pot movie? He has no culture. Don't be naive and "white"...it has a different cultural look at weed. It's not stereotypical, of course it is in ways...you can never avoid stereotypes.
Redman and Methodman are entertaining. It's not the best.
I just wanted to defend a decent movie from that silly attack. He categorizes it and stereotypes it where it doesn't have a chance.
It's worth a watch if you get the chance. But check my other reviews for some other good suggestions.
