X-Men '97: Motendo/Lifedeath - Part 1 (2024)
They tried to put too many things in one episode
The Jubilee part of the story had some fun parts but felt very fast paced with no substance underneath. The feeling is that they try to bring back the essence of the original show, in a short time, without giving it time to develop/continue each character's journey.
The part with Storm, felt even more fast paced, with no connection whatsoever. We get very fast from the bar scene where Forge meets Storm to the scene where he says that he loves her. I feel like they could have build upon their relation more by adding more context.
The general feeling is that it is still a show for children, without much profound development of character. This would explain the fast pacing of the series.
Napoleon (2023)
A shallow representation
When i first heard about Ridley Scott making a Napoleon movie with Joaquin Phoenix as lead actor, i was very excited. Little that i knew that this movie would not match the expectations set. First of all i would like to state that i didn't expect an historically accurate movie given the fact that it is not Ridley Scott strongest suite (see Kingdom of Heaven). There is a small measure of truth in all of his movies but they are not built as a documentary and they are not intended to be one. Nevertheless, this movie doesn't even come close to the vibe given by Kingdom of Heaven or other historical movies, from an historical point of view. I always look for a particular type of energy in movies, especially in historical ones but Napoleon in my opinion fails to deliver. This movie tries to much to contain all peculiarities of Napoleon's life but fails miserably. We see all and nothing. The feeling that i got was that we saw a fast forward version of his life but without any soul or essence. Even the battle scenes seemed dull and without soul. I think Ridley set the bar too high through his previous movies for this part. Regarding Joaquin's performance, there is not much to say. I think his interpretation was similar to a performance you would see in a stage theater. I don't know why but at some points in the movie, it felt like a low budget movie with very poor writing and very poor dialogue. I will wait for the extended version to see if my opinion changes for the best.
The Batman (2022)
You can't review this movie as in terms of good and bad. It's just different and unique.
I went to see this movie without setting any expectations. I am a fan of the DC Universe (not necessarily the movies) and i have seen all of them (including the animated movies) so far. If you're looking for a word to descrie this version, i think the best one is ¨different¨. You can't say that it is a bad movie nor that it is a great movie in my opinion. It is unique in his own way. Pattinson and Reeves portrayal of Batman is more anchored in reality than the previous versions. We see a Batman that is very much flawed and that has very visible traumas from the past which is kind of new for this genre. Even his gadgets are less the James Bond type and more like Point Break type. From this point of view it has a similarity with the last Joker. I liked the detective point of view. I expected to see more of Paul Dano as Riddler (especially without the mask). He was a great cast and i think they could have done even better job at developing the character even more. In the battle of the brains, there are virtually no limits to where you can go. The visuals are also great. They reminded me of Tim Burton's version of the Batman. In any case, i strongly recommend that you watch this movie, sleep on it and then think about it. Enjoy!
