Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980)
too long for short history
Following the critics I had a great expectation about this movie. After seen some episodes, on DVD television version, I was boredom. The development is linear and it is impossible to get any real insight about Germany on years 20. Despite Germany depression after WWI there were a lot of livid cabaret, as Weil and Bretch show us, but the music for the movie is unbearable, maybe this was the Director intention move spectator from the comfort through a limited music and dark photography. The main character Franz is too psychotic as the women around him too. I enjoyed "M Dusseldorf Vampire" , a Fritz Lang masterpiece and which tell us more about the Germans fear before WWII than this long Fassbinder. The high is the photography, most of it on small room on dark scenes.
La notte di San Lorenzo (1982)
the sacrifice worths the war ?
If you watch this movie you will note the importance of American fight for freedom on II World War. Italy was in a civil war, partigiani against fascists, cousins against cousins. The Taviani brothers bring on marvelous Toscany landscape all the pain of battles. The anatomy and cruelty of the war, the mourning face of a German soldier is the same as the enemy, how the civilian suffers under cross fire are revealed by takes as cutting knife. Can love survive or grow under war freedom restriction ? Was the church collaborating with fascist in some aspects ? Are open questions whose replies the directors try to give us. We can't avoid thinking about what is going on Iraque war, after all tears and stars are falling on San Lorenzo nights years by years since the end of II World War, the war never stopped in this crazy word.
Caché (2005)
what your ticket is paid for ?
Two hours off your stupid life worths when you pay the ticket and enter on dark room. That is a time for emotion, imagination and self-education. But it worths when the director is doing experience with you, the idiot audience that waits for plot changes ? that is a difference between movie and books. If dislike the reading you you close the book at once, but in movie we ever has the hope that a beautiful scene will appear or that the drama moves the plot. This movie has no focus, neither in the social or private life, it is an open "drama" you cann't grasp director's intention. The scenes are static and slow. The actor play is not characterized and the beautiful Julliet Binoche has a awful makeup. It a loose of time, money and patience, rare resources now days.
