Doctor Sleep (2019)
Suprisingly good movie
It captures much more of the classic King charm than Stranger Things and while it's not Kubrick, and doesn't try to be, it has that lush cinematography that majority of modern cinema lacks.
I'm dissapointed at Kubrick fans being dissapointed to be brutally honest. Not everything about the Shining was stellar either. This move managed to take the best bits of what both of the authors behind The Shining did good and meld them, without trying to out-King King or out-Kubrick Kubrick. All in all it's one of the best adaptations of a King novel I've seen and one of the best hommages to Kubrick movies I've seen.
Mike Flanagan did an amazing job and I'm definitely looking forward to more of his stuff. Absentia was amazing, I personally think he did a great job with Before I Wake, but this is his "coming of age" and a pinnacle of cinematography in his work, and I only expect even greater movies from him in the future.
High Moon (2014)
Requires a taste for camp SF, some wits and a sense of humor.
Great camp fantasy film with a distinctively quirky sense of humor. Obviously if you're looking for a predictable, Michael Bay taking-itself-too-seriously Sci-Fi drama this is the wrong movie. If you were never a proper fan of authentic SF literature you will not get it and you'll end up disappointed. Much like some of the genre's best stories, the movie is a beautifully woven combination of preachy philosophy, quirky humor, nerdy references, Cold War era antiwar internationalism and science stretched too far. Great fun overall.
San Andreas Quake (2015)
On the flip side.. the blockbuster movie isn't much better
I'm not seismologist but have somewhat of an interest in the field.
This flick even got the seismology part slightly better than the big budget one whose popularity it's trying to rub itself off. For example they're using moment magnitude scale (M scale) instead of totally inappropriate Richter scale, and are spot on that the biggest shot we have in predicting quakes is big data / machine learning approach that is now being researched left and right.
Other than that, both movies are severely lacking in pretty much all regards (acting, plot, accuracy..), except that the big budget blockbuster has better CGI .. which is to be expected.
All in all, I don't think other reviewers were being totally fair to this flick depicting it as a scam, as the big blockbuster is also a total waste of time unless you're really into the CGI, and if you can withstand lots of horrible, intelligence insulting nonsense (and that level of resilience is expected from Hollywood punters nowadays), both can be fun 80 minutes about earthquakes.
