Legend (2015)
"You'll like this one...."
"A paranoid schizophrenic walks into a bar ..." says Reggie
There is of course a million ways to tell a story about the Kray twins, and/or the London criminal gang culture of the 1960's... is Legend the best way? Who knows. It is a way for sure and it works well enough for me. More 'human' than the Kemp brothers rendition in my opinion.
But Tom Hardy playing Ronnie Kray is simply phenomenal, for me his portrayal IS the film. For me it is an Oscar worthy performance.
The refusal of Ronnie to take his medication is of course true to life for so many. In fact of late it has come to be realised that the refusal to medicate is directly attributable to the 'illness'... 'it' does not want to be lessened or controlled. The human mind is way more complex than a few tablets.
If you want to know what a paranoid schizophrenic, psychopathic and sexually sadistic nihilist is like to deal with, then watch this.
World War Z (2013)
I REALLY like this film
I always say 'contains spoilers' as I have no idea what constitutes a spoiler.
What can I say about this film? My wife is one of those people with an extraordinarily high IQ and unless something really grips her, she has the attention span of a gnat.....
She sat still from the first second of this film to the last, glued to the screen. Almost unheard of to be honest. The last time she was gripped by something cinematic like this was the entire Band of Brothers series.
We do NOT do zombie films, horror films, slasher films or anything of that ilk so we have been somewhat reticent to watch this.
It is in our opinion not a 'zombie movie', it is a movie which has zombies as a part of the story line.
We found it exciting, gripping and really hugely enjoyable.
Watch it and decide for yourself, don't listen to negative comments from schloick horror fans, it was never meant to be in that genre.
Battleship (2012)
I recognised this once I watched it....
... because it is Lethal Weapon for the 2000's.
There's no spoilers in this because other people have it seems to inspect the ins and outs of a cats behind... "This wouldn't work!" "That is not what happens!" and on and on.
Battleship is an action film, it is Cowboys and Indians, it is 'Black hat, White hat'.... it is the 80's/90's Gung-Ho genre revisited.
Now, if you like that sort of thing which occasionally I do, then I think you'd like this film.
If you're all very studious and pretentious about your movie diet... then don't watch it, you'll hate it.
But to stand around spitting blood at it for what it is, is IMO similar to saying you disliked a French film because they were speaking French and you do not like sub-titles.... so why are you watching it?
Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
More Cameo City than Calumet City
See my title? Now that is a really poor joke, but I hate to say still better and more amusing than this film. I have put this review may contain spoilers, but I am not sure how I can really spoil something so appalling.
Music, yes it has music and it is OK. I was most fascinated to hear a hyped up Gospel rendition of "John the Revelator" a much beloved tune for me from The Sons of Anarchy.
Does the Blue Brothers 2000 have a plot? Not that I noticed, it seemed to be mostly a vehicle to fit in as many possible cameo performances from The Blues Brothers.
If you look at the full cast list and see that they managed to destroy 1 more car than the original Blues Brothers film you have to ask this question; Was someone at studio production stone deaf and at a business lunch misunderstood a conversation in which they thought someone said "The Blues Brothers were great too..." to which they said "Yes...." and then thought they were signing for lunch?
It is said that this film lost $14 Million. I'm shocked the loss was really that small.
Braquo (2009)
Season 1 - Simply Brilliant
If you like Spiral, if you like De Niro's Ronin, if you like The Shield or any other really dark criminal situations with messed up people, drugs and guns, then you'll simply adore this.
For me the far N Europeans do the best thriller's such as The Bridge or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but you cannot beat the French for very realistic gritty, brooding criminal based dramas.
Great characterisations, a sensible mix of personal life issues and work issues all with a feeling it is about to go horribly wrong yet again! I've yet to watch season 2 though I have it, I hope it is as good as season 1 which is remarkably good IMO.
Season 2
Just finished watching it and thought it as good as Series 1.
It finishes leaving the opening for series 3... if it ever gets made.
