A Modern Fairytale
20 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie unlike any other nowadays. E.S. should be called a fairytale for adults, yet it has a very deep meaning. I have seen it for about twelve times and still cannot get enough of it.

Johnny Depp makes an excellent performance despite the fact it was only his seventh movie (and the first one with Tim Burton). It is outrageous that he was not even nominated for Oscar.

What makes it a fairytale is the simplicity and purity of the movie. It is impossible to tell the time or place where it could be located, characters are beautifully drawn and still somewhat simplified. Burton accents the visual part, especially colors - it is genial how he has separated two different worlds just a few steps away from each other. The angel-like look of Kim, Jim's brutality and Peg's family's inability to see the problems as well as local housewives who are unable to use their own heads form a surreal reality so connected to Burton's creations. Burton shows our world in mirror.

The scene where Kim dances in the snow is one of the most memorable love scenes in the history of cinema, remarkable are also the giant sculpture of hand in front of the castle showing Edward's desires and the flashback that shows how dreams are sacrificed in the name of love. Every scene can be looked as a separate wonderful piece of art.

E.S. is a movie that is suitable for any age or educational level - everyone who loves fairy tales.

She kills... and not with laughter
15 August 2005
I sat in front of my TV for almost 2 hours, which seemed like half of a lifetime, with my eyes glazed and brain frozen. If it had lasted a couple minutes longer, I would have needed medical help. Why, oh why was this film made, instead that the money would have been given to starving orphans or animal shelters or something like that? A lot more people would have become happy.

The plot is absolutely illogical although Sandra does her best to make it even a little bit better. MC 2 is so sweet, all-Hollywood and pink like a brand new Barbie doll. Everything is completely predictable, there is nothing besides clichés. And, why the gay jokes, Hollywood? It seems like every producer was trying to make Carson The Queer Eye For The Straight Guy a part of their movie. Except that Carson is funny. In fact, with a little effort from the actors MC 2 could have been called a parody, only it was a little too pathetic.

I would not recommend MC 2 even to my worst enemy. It should be declared a mass destruction weapon and made illegal. The two stars are because I liked the first one... and because zero or negative numbers are not an option.

Nicole, what have you done?
15 August 2005
I am not saying it was an awful movie. Quite an average Hollywood time-waist comedy with plot holes and famous actors who were probably VERY desperate and/or broke. Something to watch on a rainy Tuesday afternoon if you have a flu, broken phone and enough potato chips to eat crazy.

Yet, it could have been a great movie if Frank Oz had put a little more work in it and had not tried to turn the original movie into a comedy with an IQ requirement "80 max". A bit more drama and horror and a lot less Midler, Lovitz and gay jokes. After all, the main idea is great. Curse the person who had the idea of putting a drop of Police Academy into it.

Nicole Kidman plays well as always, rest of the cast is a little disappointing (and, again, cut out Lovitz and Midler!). It is bizarre how the woman who played in a Trier movie ended just a year later in something like that. Did she forget to read the whole script before saying yes?

Finally, did Frank Oz write it in a bus? The plot holes drive just mad. It would be nice if next time he read the script through BEFORE he starts making the movie. The result might be a lot less puzzling.

A Flash from Past
6 March 2005
This movie is, without doubt, an essential part of any Estonian's past. Yet, after seeing it dozens of times, the movie only gets better.

The cast does a terrific job. Although very young, they are very talented, making Kevade a humorous, yet psychologically interesting movie. Fantasies of Oskar Luts have been visible to the audience.

Something that has to be mentioned are the wonderful, warm songs. Almost every single one of them is a classic.

Considering the Soviet power which ruled Estonia at that time, the movie is surprisingly human, free of any kind of propaganda. It is a must-see for anyone connected to Estonia.

The Aviator (2004)

Love it...
28 February 2005
In my opinion, The Aviator is one of the greatest films I've ever seen, comparable to The Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese has really outdone himself. It looks as if the movie was put together of little pieces, like different news stories... It's up to audience to put together the big picture. Which I liked the best was the unpredictability of the script. It is impossible to know even what happens in 10 minutes, everything the cast says or does is a surprise. Leo does a fantastic job in the leading role, giving the perfect impression of a complex character. Also, Cate Blanchett is absolutely terrific. She shows Katherine Hepburn realistically, adding a little bit of humor. Special effects are incredible, they spice up the film but don't draw the attention from the script. The Aviator would have been perfect Oscar material, sad that the Academy felt the other way. Hopefully Scorsese makes other films and finally gets the long deserved Oscar.
