It's OK but stuck up
6 August 2021
So I am a believer of paranormal activity as I had my own experiences with it. That said, a lot of their interactions and science feels broken. A phone can have interference when using a app to pick up anything yet they use it as proof.

I also have a problem with their psychic. Some of what he says are red flags to me, from him saying spirits will not do something over again to his distaste of the taxidermy in episode 5. Now his distaste was not the huge problem but the fact that his own views seemed to come out time and time again. He stated he was a vegetarian and was against any sort of taxidermy so almost everything he talked about in that location was about that. It felt more like he was pushing his views on the matter then actually being a psychic.

I wish they would try to make things more entertaining and only do one place per episode as they don't seem to be there long enough to do any form of investigating. I understand some places don't have much going on, but then don't make it sound like there is a lot after.

Klaus (2019)

A beautiful updated version of 2D animation that feels like it will age very well.
28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was amazing. While most Christmas movies seem to age with time, I feel like this one will be a nice timeless classic (except for the pop rock songs that show up at like two points in the show). It's one I am looking forward to showing my family.

I kind of feel in love with pretty much every character that showed up starting with Jesper. Now I will not try to hide this, Jesper is basically Kuzco. He grew up in the lap of luxury, basically got used to doing nothing and having everything handed to him, then gets thrust into a backwater town no one wants to touch in order to teaching him about honesty and hard work. It's a very common plot and I can't tell you the number of times that sort of situation is played out in shows. Most of the time, it just makes me roll my eyes and say 'great, another one of those stories' but just like with Kuzco, it's the comedy they get down right. The timing and expressions are so good that I just was mostly sitting back and chuckling at his misfortunes rather then feeling like it was hitting me over the head with his background. He may be snobbish, but he never acts mean and spiteful to the characters around him even at the start. He just seems more awkward and not sure how to actually act around common folk, especially these kinds of townsfolk where his first impression of them was a all out brawl. Even I would have trouble with how to react to that kind of person.

The next person I want to talk about is Klaus, the woodsman. If Jesper is the Kuszco of this movie, then Klaus is... half of Pacha. I say half because he acts like the more quite side of Pacha with the little bit of annoyance Jasper gives him. The other side would have to be Mogens who is this boat captain that has the sarcastic side of Pacha (which is basically the only personality Mogens brings to the table. That's it.). In a comedy, Klaus is the straight man watching from the side lines, seeing Jasper make a fool of himself, and then he comes in and does everything right.

Mrs. Krum is the Yzma of the movie and her sidekick Kronk is played well by Mr. Ellingboe. Two characters who are heads of different clans that fight each other. Can you tell they probably took a LOT of ideas from The Emperors New Groove?

While they had the feeling of The Emperors New Groove in the slap stick and the personality of the characters, the story itself has some key points that make it its own story. The message it tries to put across for example is not a story of being humble but of doing good. One thing that kept on coming up over and over again is 'A true selfless act always sparks another' which is a very good thought... in theory. I sometimes wonder if that may be a bit of a translation problem seeing as this was created as a Spanish film but needless to say, it felt like the message should have been altered. It partly hammers into your head the reason Jesper is making these changes is to make his mail quota and the reason why the kids do what they do is for the presents (that is not a spoiler seeing this is the origin of Santa Claus) so calling it a true selfless act feels wrong. Maybe an act of kindness can spark another, but selfless means you want nothing behind it. Just a little nit picking.

The animation was amazing, giving 2D a 3D feeling. It feels like a moving picture book with how the colors and lighting fall perfectly onto the characters. They used a mixture of different mediums to make it look new and exciting which blends almost seamlessly together. Almost each and every character looks completely different from one another which means no two characters have the same silhouette. It adds a lot of fun especially when you have large scenes with tons of characters in them. I watched a movie insider video on Youtube about the show and they talked about the fact that there were 3,160 scenic layouts set up for the lighting to make sure each one both matched the lighting of the character and the mood of what would be happening in that spot. As an artist myself, it blows my mind that they did so many different pieces as each scene was a bunch of different layers placed together. Sorry, I'm geeking out very slightly.

The voice acting is amazing, the pop music... I'm not so sure. Like it fits a little bit, but not sure if it couldn't of been something else placed there. The instrumental and background music was quite magical and the only vocal song that stood out as a perfect fit was 'Invisible' by Zara Larsson. Somehow that just felt like it had a better feel then the strange rap song popping up randomly. Jason Schwartzman bought a lot of energy playing Jesper and kept it up throughout the movie. He really nailed the scenes in which he had a chip on his shoulder but could also play the rather calmer sweet version when needed. J.K. Simmons was amazing as Klaus and some how made this tall masculine character have a really sweet gentle side to him. Surprising for the person who played J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films.

Overall, I feel like this is a must watch for anyone who has a bit of Christmas spirit in them or likes Santa Claus. Heck, even if you don't celebrate Christmas, I feel like this movie would be very good to add to your video watching as Christmas is just one very small piece to the whole story. I know I really want to add this movie to one of my 'watch every year' additions.

It was OK... but just lacks something.
27 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So first off, you might be wondering why you never heard of this movie… well this is because it was actually a Danish movie. That's right, this (from what I can find out anyway) was only released in Denmark even though it has English and Danish voice actors. Because of this, there are some things that I don't really understand as far as jokes go.

So the story is pretty much the fish out of water story told a dozen times before. In fact, most of the characters feel loosely based on characters seen in 'How to Train your Dragon'. We have the slightly wimpy Barbarian (substitute Barbarian with Viking and you get Hiccup), the rather tough Warrior Shield Woman (Counterpart would be Astrid), the rather jerky and womanizing Bard (Counterpart would be Snotlout… and if you say he isn't a womanizer, have you seen how he acts to Astrid?), the flamboyant Elf (I feel like he was a mix of both Tuffnut and Fishlegs), and the father figure who wants the wimp to be a perfect Barbarian (Pretty much Stoick). Now I don't normally like to compare two movies or shows much, but it was hard for me not to find this as more of an adult form of one of my favorite movies... and in my opinion, it is pretty lacking.

So basically the main story goes along the lines of all the barbarians are kidnapped and Ronal is supposed to be the one to save them. Ya, sound like something else? The evil Volcazar wants to capture all the decedents of the warrior Krong, the one who defeated the god of Volcazar's tribe. Volcazar's tribe is basically the tribe of Masicistic Satanic lust from what I actually gathered. To be fair, I think all the different groups of people in this fantasy world just get on my nerves. All the different tribes and races felt much more like stereotypes. The Barbarians were like Jocks, Amazons like sex crazy cheerleaders, and elves… well you can tell what they probably were like (For those who can't tell, they were very flamboyant).

This movie is not a children's movie by any stretch of the imagination. There are references and imagery that would probably be found in the adult cartoons we have here in America like close-ups of the ass and the… um… supposedly endowed lead male. I don't know fully if this is because it is a Danish movie or if it was made specifically for Adults as they have different customs but it does get very overwhelming very quickly with just how many references they put into it in just a few moments. Hell, the enemies henchmen are pretty much dressed and act a lot like masochists with the amount of pain they put on themselves and the leather they wear. (Talking more stereotypical here. Not everyone who is masochistic dresses like these guys.)

This movie was done with CG graphics and though the designs are very interesting and the texture work is pretty nice, the animation isn't all that great. There are times the characters move so fast that I wonder if they forgot to soften the key positions while animating it. The model's motions seem to pop into place at times making the scenes feel jarring and unnatural. I give them some points for trying but the movement really was the part that made me shy away.

I watched the English voice acting, and it was seriously fast. Not sure if it was something with the translations not fitting the amount of time they had, but I found it very hard to follow. When it did finally calm down, I was so confused of what the heck had just happened. It only slowed down about 40 minutes into the movie but it felt like I was only watching it for 10 minutes. You could call that good movie in that it doesn't drag, but when all you pretty much got was a lot of sexual jokes and high pitch whining from the main character, I don't know if that's a good movie or not. So you have noticed that I haven't talked much on the voice actors, well there really isn't much to say on them. Pierce Cravens is the voice of Ronal and he plays off the wimpy whine of that voice rather well though I kind of wish this wasn't our main character. There are plenty of 'wimpy' sounding main characters that I liked before, Hiccup from 'How to Train your Dragon' being one of them. This one however gets on my nerves. And do not get me started on the country hick voice Ben Bledsoe gave for Alibert, the bard. I think the only two I actually liked was Ashley Carin as the shield warrior Zandra and the Oliver Vaquer as the very fruity elf Elric.

The music is… forgettable for the most part. I think the only one that was actually memorable was the ending song which was pretty much a rock Ballard about Ronal which I think was called 'Barbarian Rhapsody'. I'm not much into rock but it wasn't bad.

So I guess we came to the important question of what I thought about this movie. Well… I can't lie, I didn't like it. I had a couple nice chuckles from the stereotypes, the spoofs, and some of the odd jokes but overall it was kind of painful to watch. The animation and the voices seemed lacking and the overall story went way to fast to not fast enough. It was OK, but I didn't get much enjoyment.

Akira (1988)
8/10
A rather interesting anime movie classic
15 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So I finally got a chance to sit down and watch it, namely the English dub. What do I think about it? It was pretty good for an anime that came out in the 1980's and it holds up pretty well to this day. I was very surprised that the show was actually directed by the writer of Akira as well. Not many people can write a manga and get to direct it as well when it comes to movie. This means that the show would have come out how he wanted to and not changed around as it went from hand to hand. Just how close is this to the manga? Well as of now, I have not read the manga so I can't answer that.

Some things do bother me with the story and mostly with the characters though it is more based on my preference of character then anything else. I just think that the biker gangs felt a bit forced. I never been in one, never even been near a gang like that before so I can't say for sure but I think they wouldn't be so open with what they were doing for so long without already being caught by the cops. I may just be analyzing it a bit too much but it just got on my nerves. That also goes for Kaneda always trying to get into Kei's pants.

The main story had a very deep underlining meaning both in psychology and in humanity itself. It's hard not to spoil anything about this when most of it happens at the end but I do have to talk about this. There is a back and forth aspect that seems to happen of what science could learn but at what price. It's there when they mess with Tetsuo's brain and the results that happen after. Let me tell you, the results were not pretty. We are always striving for learning more about ourselves and to push ourselves to the max but at what price do we pay for such an idea? Are we even willing to push us to a point that we ourselves are not considered human anymore? And what would happen if such a power was placed in the hands of someone who didn't fully understand how to use it? Something that Kiyoko says in the show rings pretty true no matter what you're talking about. I went something like 'when you are given this much power, you must chose how you use it.' Sort of similar to Spiderman's Uncle telling him 'with great power comes great responsibility' but the idea is still the same.

The animation was rather gory and bloody for the most part with a lot of dark depressing textures. The place they lived really did look like a back ally pig sty but I believe that was what they were going for. For the time this came out, the artwork is rather good and I was surprised by just how much detail they put into the background as well as some of the movements. They even placed the streaks from the tail lights of the bikes in. I don't think I have seen that much detail put into a show that was hand drawn except for Studio Ghibi's movies. While the design of the characters were pretty realistic as far as anime can go without not looking like anime, they were still rather simple and it is understandable when people have to draw them time and time again. Once in a while, the lighting and shading didn't work all that well and I don't remember much shading on the 'children' except for the wrinkles.

The voice acting was surprisingly well done for the time it was dubbed. I can understand why this movie was what got anime going in America because the voice acting was what I would of imagined the characters to sound like. Because of the somewhat realistic artwork and the constant yelling that characters did, the lip sink suffered slightly. I can only say slightly because what they did do; they did a damn good job in doing it. One person who stood out really well was Kiyoko's voice actor (The female little child) Melora Harte. For those of you wondering, I did watch the 1988 release of the dubbing and not the new 2001 version; at least I believe it to be.

I can truly understand why this is called a cult classic, being as a symbol of 'greatness' in the anime world. As the years have not been all that kind to it, it may not hold that title for animation and voice acting but its story is still something that should be kept in the minds of those who watch it. If you haven't watched it, you are missing out even if you don't like this stuff.

A Amazing and deep story for a children's show
11 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a rather hard cartoon to talk about it. The main story is about Wirt and Greg who are two half brothers trying to find their way home through the forest called the Unknown. As the children walk through the forest, they are followed by someone known as the Beast. I actually thought this was really interesting compared to many of the other cartoons that have shown up on Cartoon Network. It's rather dark, and has many images that I would consider a bit frightening for a young kid. I am lost for words so this review might be a little strange but it is something you should watch.

This show is actually rather short so they have to show the personalities of the characters in just a few minutes. The two main characters are the ones I can talk about the most. Wirt is the big brother of the two and the most interesting of them. He goes through many different stages of denial and depression throughout the whole show. There are the times in which he is basically hopeful that they can get home, then goes through a feeling of hopelessness and loss and then near the end, he seems to have a realization. Sadly, there are way too many spoilers for me to clarify. This is not a good one to talk about without spoiling anything and partly because it's hypnotic. I just kept watching and not able to say anything as it was going.

So this is the part of the review where I guess I'm supposed to talk about all the special aspects and my theory behind the show. Sadly, I can't say without a lot of spoilers in it so all I'm going to say is… this is a show about the near death experience of the two young boys and their frog. I know you're all wondering exactly why I'm saying that, but the thing is, you have to watch it to understand. If I was to keep talking all about the reasons why I have this theory, then there wouldn't be a real reason to watch it I think. So many people have talked about this theory all over youtube so I'm not sure if I should even be talking about it here. If you want to know, you should check it out there but watch the show first.

And if you are going to watch the show, then I think you also need to watch the pilot show called 'Tome of the Unknown'.

The artwork has such a beautiful feel to it, like old German block prints. The characters designs are simple, but perfect for the type of detailed story they were trying to portray. I guess its like a Yin and Yang to it, where if it was a really detailed show, then we would be lost in the artwork and not be able to see the story where as with simple characters and color pallet, we can focus more on the story they are trying to give. For the most part, the areas have a surreal atmosphere in the organic woods but when the children end up in the places where there are people, it feels more colonial. There are times when people are celebrating a harvest festival or dressed in pilgrim attire and yet there are times when some modern day images would be shown such as brass interments that would not be around at that time.

The music is actually really good, surprisingly catchy and fun. I guess I would consider this a bit like a musical as each episode at least has one or two songs to it. The opening theme reminds me of an old time fairy tale opening, like it's a tale of caution that should be heeded. The voices fit very well for the characters to a point I don't know what else to say.

This is one that I suggest you go watch as it's a beautiful story and even more interesting if you pick up the subtle details of the show.

Steven Universe (2013–2019)
8/10
Rather Deep and interesting
11 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
How do I explain a show that is still going on and has more mysteries then answers? This is the problem but also the amazing part of this show. The show follows the Crystal Gems as they save the world but more so the youngest of the group, Steven. Steven isn't a normal human or Crystal Gem, he is the mixture of both. His mother, Rose Quarts, gave up her body to bring him into the world and in return, he ended up getting her gem and her powers. As he is just a child, he doesn't know how to use his powers at all. He is just learning but it also doesn't help that he also has to learn how to be human as well. He doesn't fit in with both the humans and the gems but he tries still. That's the amazing thing about him, is always trying and no one seems to care that he isn't one or the other, they just take care of him like a community.

It's hard to dive deep into the story line without giving a lot of spoilers. The very basic thing is that we have a group of alien beings who want to protect the earth from the rest of their race. When you just look on the outside like that, it sounds like a lot of older shows and that the idea isn't all that new, but it's the complex parts that bring you in. This show dives deep into both sexuality and a sense of belonging that is really needed for a good story. There are so many things that they get into that isn't just for children but for adults as well. I watch so many anime and cartoons that it's hard for me to find stuff that is actually based in my age range. In anime, most shows talk about high school problems, in cartoons from America its more about the little kiddy stuff with the special messages like 'don't talk to bad guys' bit at the end. It gets old after a while not finding something that you can relate to. This on the other hand, I actually connected with the characters. I could understand the drama they were going through, like a story about how Pearl felt lost without the person she looked up to the most, or how Amethyst felt like she didn't fit in with the rest of the gems. These were the deep stories that I wish I had as a kid but never really got.

Just a little bit ago; I watched a Youtube show by Nostalgia Critic that helped me figure out how to explain why I like this show so much. It's a really interesting perspective why Cartoons for children today are so much better then the older cartoons like Heman, My Little Pony, and Care Bears. If you would like to know more, please go watch it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=qXpWAO0F7ck .

The artwork is very similar to Adventure Time with clean lines, bright colors, and very odd stretching and character designs. The main characters are very humanoid but when we get into some of the strange abstract things that happen, they can be very lack luster in design. A couple of the strange things like the TV show Steven watches called the Crying Breakfast Club feel like they are actually from Adventure Time themselves. Colors are very bright and stand out against the sort of saturated backgrounds and none of the characters really have shadows, just very basic colorings. I believe the reason is mostly so that they can animate the show faster without worrying about which way the light is but it works well for the design.

There is a downside to the art though. The fact that a lot of shows now seem to have the same style or the same sort of feel as another show. Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls… they all feel very similar in the art style which makes me feel like it's a copy cat. We have the same problem with the Anime coming from Japan. Most reviews that I do on Anime always seem to have a hard time talking about the art because so much of it is the same. One frame could easily be used in another anime perfectly. It seems to be happening a lot even in America even though we whine about that from other countries. I keep hearing friends say all anime from Japan looks the same but then they will say that the art style of American shows is so new and innovated. Looking at those same shows they say are innovated, I see a lot of the same stuff like what they were talking about with Anime.

The music is really awesome. Even in the very first episode, they had one really catchy song 'Let me drive my van into your heart' that I could not get out of my head. If they made a soundtrack CD, I would probably buy it as it's just so good. There was only one or two songs that sort of made me annoyed but that was because of some of the concepts with the episode and not the actual song I think. The voices work really well with the characters, none of them feeling annoying. Well, OK, Steven is slightly annoying in the beginning but he grows on you as he learns about growing up.

How music Videos can tell a cute story
11 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This I think is one of the hardest for me to review along side one shots manga. The problem with reviewing this is that the show is a collection of 5 minute episodes that are pretty much like a music video. Why I decided to review this was partly because almost all 10 of these little mini shorts put together would be a nice hour long movie. The animation is rather good and the music fits the mood well. When we start talking about the story… well that is sort of left to interpretation. No one in the show actually talks. They are all mute characters but what they do and how they act shows a lot about their personality. Since they do not talk, I will be making up names sort of for the characters so you can understand who exactly I am talking about.

We have Eskimo who seems to be a very kind hearted soul who deeply loves a little Indian girl. The story starts out when they are babies and first meet on the moon where Eskimo gives her a star. I consider this to be there imagination taking them places and soon leading them to each other. We skip a few years when they are… I want to say adults but in this sort of art style, I'm not fully sure on the age. Eskimo and Indian live together in an igloo (stereotypes abound on that I guess) where they spend their days happy. They have no knowledge that they are being watched by someone who I like to call Foxbeard, the wizard. Foxbeard becomes jealous of their love and does a spell to separate them. When he was about to finish the spell to make it permanent, an owl steals the star that would make the spell last and flies to Eskimo, giving him the star. Eskimo leaves everything behind to go look for Indian, braving all the dangers and elements that stand in his way including the darkness that Foxbeard seems to have control over. Most of this might be me interpreting the show but it's the only way I can think of to explain what the story seems to be. There is only one episode that seems like it might not fit in with the show and that would be episode 2 which I kind of figure might be a dream sequence.

The animation is rather well done in sort of this soft new era art style. The characters are very childish even when they are adults… again that might be me thinking they are adults… and actually very cute. The show does feels sometimes like its from a picture book or some sort of stage as most stars are hung from strings and there is some odd physics but the whole show is like that so I consider it more of the design. It all just feels like a dream which fits with the soft music that goes with the images. I felt myself getting relaxed from the show as there wasn't any time it felt overpowering. The colors are rather washed out in pastels for the most part or water color painting. Even with that, most things had an amazing amount of detail to them.

The music is almost heavenly. There isn't really a surprise when I say that the music was actually done by the shows name sake, One eskimO. When I say no surprise, I mean that the show just felt like it was made for the music, not the other way around. The voice of the singer was so gentle and soft that sometimes I couldn't tell exactly what he was saying, almost like it was hypnotic that way. I could tell partly what the music was about by the title of the song and of some of the images but other then that, the music sort of blended in with each other. That was the one thing I had trouble with this show, even though the music was rather beautiful and the images were great, the music was basically one tone. It was this one level through all of it and this one rather sad sort of style that they kind of drowned within each other. No song actually stood out to be one of my favorites because they melded into the next song. I would have loved to see a little more variety, like maybe an upbeat song between the really slow sweet songs.

Over all, it was a rather interesting thing to watch and I liked it. It's worth the little time it was to watch. Also a little trivia, the band One eskimO is mostly an animated band. They show themselves as an Eskimo, Monkey, Giraffe, and Penguin even though the people who do the actual music are human and not computer generated. There debut Album was released in 2009 and this show were actually made based on the music from that Album for the most part.

I'm surprised I didn't get nightmares watching this when I was a kid
12 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So, let me touch on a few things before you read my review. I am pagan, but I grew up Lutheran Christian, reading the bible and watching shows like this (Heck, this is one of the shows I used to watch as a child). I still live with my family that is very Christian. I believe in some things about the bible and the good message that is supposed to be in it. That said, I will not be getting to into the differences between the bible and this show. This show was made for children, and no matter what anyone says, the bible is not a child friendly book. There are a lot of racist and sexist things in the bible that are no good for children cartoons.

Now pleasantries aside and I haven't scared you off with my fair warning about what you will find in this review, I say lets get on with it. There is really not much to explain about this show, it's just not that good. The whole concept of the show from what I gathered now that I'm older is to scare children into doing everything they are told to do. The very first episode pretty much starts out with Chris not wanting to clean the attic that his father told him to and then ends after Chris saw the first story, Adam and Eve, and then he says he will to everything that his father tells him to do. The problem with this is that the way the dialog is written, its very robotic and makes the characters not have that much personality to them.

So besides all the characters from the bible, we have Chris's Dad, who basically has the personality of an overbearing father, Chris, who basically has the personality of a fast talking little boy, and Joy, a sweet little girl who always ends up hanging around Chris. Then there is Gizmo…. Who pretty much acts like a little kid even younger then Chris or Joy. I think he is more of a annoyance then any sort of help to the children. These are pretty much everything about them. I know that the characters are supposed to have some personal growth going on but their personal growth just ends up being 'Oh, I did this in the beginning of the episode. Now I went and saw a story in the bible talking about the same thing I was annoyed about so I won't do what I did in the beginning anymore.' Rinse and repeat over the span of each episode. The personality of the bible characters are very one sided. They are either good or bad, and the conversations that they have just seem to come off like a creeper. Every time I hear them talk, the hair on the back of my neck stands on end and I get a chill down my back. How did I not get nightmares watching this? This artwork might be the reason why I am really into Japanese art now. The look is very Japanese anime from that time. The large eyes and the cute chibi style. When I was little, I had no clue that the super book was actual a Japanese anime itself, I always thought it was from America so it was surprising when I was looking up the info about it. I don't quite know if this was just from the quality of the show, or the quality of where I was watching it, but the show was very blurry. The backgrounds felt more like blobs of color and the characters seemed to meld into it making it hard to watch.

The opening song is… a product of the times I think. It has a bit of a jazzy sort of feel to it but doesn't really have anything to do with the actual show. It really dates this whole series and makes me sigh. The ending song is also very dated too. Both songs basically just try to push how 'super' this book is. This was a show I loved and now looking back at it, the voice acting and the music just feels like it was rushed or didn't have that much care put into it. The first episode, even the narrator sounds like he was rushed when you first get the introduction as to what is happening. The level of voice acting in this show is pretty on par with Speed Racer, except speed racer was enjoyable to a point. This is just sad. They do the lamest way possible to explain anything in the bible, and everything just has to be explained. I wonder again just how they caught my attention when I was young because right now, it's just boring.

This show used to be a show I watched when I was little. Now that I'm older, I can't believe I used to watch this! It has no personality and no soul to it. This has two seasons but I could barely get through the first 5 episodes. It has nothing to do with me being pagan and everything to do with how mind numbing this show is. It hurts watching it with just how little soul was in it.

Hal (2013)
10/10
A wonderful story that needs to be seen
12 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The show starts out rather strange with a plain suddenly exploding over a quiet little town. Then they suddenly talk about a boy named Hal who had passed away and a girl who seemed to be his girlfriend is taking it pretty hard. To me, this beginning just feels like it was a promo for the show instead of the actual show because we don't really get any information at all. We can speculate what's going on, but that's all. We don't get a full picture of what is actually happening. And then we have a robot that becomes human in order to help the young girl. I'm actually not sure if we could really call him human right away though as he doesn't seem to know how to actually act human or feel human. I know this is going to into philosophy but this really does ask the question, what does it take to be human? Throughout the whole show, we learn a lot about Hal. I mean the real Hal in fact, not the robot one. I like how we learn through Robotic Hal's way of learning then just being told straight out. It gives us a mystery to solve then just a romance. In the end, there is a point when Hal's past seems to haunt the two. And then in the end, it really changes around, making things a bit more confusing but making it really fun all the same. It's not like any other love story between a robot and human. It's hard to explain because of it being such a big spoiler that it would mess with you. You really should watch it if you are interested in knowing what the hell I am talking about with switch. And even at the end, there are one or two things that don't seem to not be closed up, things that should but don't take away from the story.

The artwork is amazing, and the sort of playful toy aspect to this is rather cute. All the vibrant colors and amazing little adornments all over the place. I didn't really see any problems with the animation being poor, though I didn't like some of the design aspects they did for a couple background characters. It doesn't mess with the story but it makes me frown slightly at that. Still, the design of the rest was wonderful and made me happy to even watch the show.

The English dub was so good; I couldn't believe how wonderful the voice acting was. Of course funimation did give it the dub so I shouldn't have expected anything less and yet I have seen some that felt like they needed a bit more. Each person sounded like what I thought they should sound like, even the ladies at the adult day care sounded good and those are normally the ones that would of sounded bad if there was a bad voice. The strange thing is that there were not that many names that stood out to me in the cast. I mean, there were people like Todd Haberkorn and Chris Burnett but the rest seemed like they did mostly background characters before this. They may still do background characters in this one too but the characters give a better connection with the world and emotions.

This is one that I definitely think you should watch even if you're not into sci-fi or romance. It's not one or the other and it sort of opens up the idea of just what a Robot could be as well as just what a human could be.

Full of clichés and just seems bland
12 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this is a pretty normal story of a man trying to become a knight but in a different reason for doing so. Although all his life he wanted to be a knight, he lives in a time where it was outlawed to be a knight. His father wants him to be a lawyer but of course he doesn't want to be one so he runs away to become what he wants. I'm not going to lie, there are a lot of clichés but they still were able to keep it slightly new. We have a boy that goes against his father's wishes, a love interest who doesn't actually care about him, a sort crazy wizard (mimicking the dragon from 'Quest for Camelot'), a cast out knight as the bad guy, and normal teachers for the boy to learn from. Though there are all these clichés, there are some things that stand out such as the laws that were being passed but sadly those are not as prominent. I mostly see a movie that tried to be like every other story about a knight. It's sad because they could have done so much to make it better and yet stuck with the normal ideas.

The animation is actually rather nice, looking a bit cartoony but overall similar to 'How to Train Your Dragon' in some of the detail work. The background is so detailed that it makes the characters look slightly bland. They do fit in with the rest of the world but sometimes they I wish that they had a bit more texture to them. As for the movement, it's actually very fluid and believable even if slightly overboard. The characters don't really stand still very long, always using there hands and being a bit over the top in some occasions.

The voices are alright although somewhat hard to listen to at times since our main character has such an overpowering old English voice. This is a voice that I would have thought would be on a person in a romance type setting, not from a pip squeak body like him. Don't get me wrong, the voice is pleasant compared to what they could have picked for him but it's not a voice I picture coming out of our main character. When other characters speak in the old English dialect, sometimes I can't understand what they are saying like the old man in the beginning or the little girl. The voices seem to be muddled together, like they are mumbling. The music really does not fit the show. It's just to pop starish and not enough medieval tone. I felt like I was pulled out of the story every time they started playing the soft pop songs. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good but they just don't fit.

I liked the show but it didn't stand out for me. It felt as though I was watching similar movies so I can't give it a very high rating.

Simply magical
25 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like the studio and Director would be a give away that this would be good. I don't know what to fully talk about as everything about this show is amazing from the story to the animation to the dub. Even the comedy doesn't get in the way of the great story that lies within this show. Only one or two things bother me but they aren't that big, like when Pazu jumps off his house and ends up breaking through bricks into his basement with no broken bones or nothing. Of course, these problems are minor and don't happen all that much.

Miyazaki seems to always have a moral to his stories, this is no different. I think the moral is that any civilization can fall if they think they are to powerful. Laputa, a place that seemed like it was a perfect place had power, wealth, and even a sense of magic. They had something special but even they ended up falling. The story line is full of spoilers if I try to explain even more but there is a beautiful story that is as mysterious as it is sad and thoughtful.

The animation is so beautiful and stands up even to this day. All hand done with so much detail and the painting of the backgrounds… I could just go on. If you seen others by Miyazaki, you know his style and he never falters. This is one of those times where I just feel speechless to how wonderful his style of art is, the colors just pop even though at times they do end up taking very small short cuts. I also didn't really notice any times where the characters would just stop moving for a very long time with only their mouths moving. He would have them moving even slightly and it would feel realistic. There are even small things like how a character would eat from the dainty way Sheeta eats to the mess that Dola's sons make. One thing I did notice (And it's a slight spoiler I guess) is that his characters sometimes look better with short hair then with long hair. Not telling you what that means but you will find out. The opening is much different then the actual show, feeling more like it was done in a rather old style, highly detailed, even more so then the animation and like they were from detailed renders.

The music is so beautiful, with amazing orchestral sounds that you could just fall asleep to. I love everything about Studio Ghibi's work and the music is one of those that I wish I had all the soundtracks. They do not let much go past them that isn't quality controlled. I could listen to it for days without it getting boring. The English dub is spot on, I'm extremely happy it didn't turn into a flop like one of their first tries for English translation.

If you have not seen this yet, you have to see it soon. It's a must watch.

For kids but has a strange concept going
16 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So this has the idea that there are some elves who don't really fit into the main group. It's a pretty normal story for a show about Christmas. The sad part though is that there is nothing original about it. We have a storyline that picked up more on the don't cut corners and keep to tradition which in my mind makes no sense. We are always changing tradition and even finding new ways of doing things. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. That's just human nature so when I see a show that is all about doing things only one way, it makes me want to yell. So what if your different, being different makes you you. To have a show that seemed to have the attitude of being different will get you into trouble just makes me wonder what they were trying to teach younger kids. I might be missing something to the show but if I missed it and this was for younger kids, and then they would have probably missed it too.

The animation is pretty general and cartoony in the CG style. Basic textures and almost every other character besides the main characters looked the same. I mean it; all the elves look exactly the same and all the reindeer except for characters used at a special point look the same. It annoys me but since it was made for younger kids, I guess it works.

Voices are very childlike which again works for what they were going for. It's simple and doesn't use a lot of 'large words' to explain things although the arguing between Winter and Snowflake got on my nerves at times. No matter what they did, they fought. I know siblings get on each others nerves but we don't have to listen to it all the time.

It was alright but just not my show. It really shows that it was made for younger children.

It was alright.
16 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very different show then what Studio Ghibli has done before, talking more about a regular family and not having a continuing plot. In my mind, this could have been a couple of 15 minute shorts more then a actual movie and it probably would of done a bit better since as I watched, I became very confused. They time skip a lot making it sometimes hard to figure out where we are in the story but then there are things that really don't need a time too.

The characters really don't have anything that actually makes them stand out. They are just a generalization of a mother, a father, and family. There really isn't much that goes in the sense of there own personality and that did really bother me. I wanted some substance in them, not grasping at straws to feel closer to the characters. To me, that really felt boring and it became like me trying to force myself to watch the whole thing. Normally I could actually grasp at someone in the story and relate to them like the older sibling but this one just seemed off.

The art style is very different then Ghibli's work as well, going for pastel colors and artwork that doesn't really fill up the whole screen most of the time. In fact, most of the border areas feel like the artwork blends off into white. It feels much like a comic strip art piece like in the paper rather then a full film. It stays mostly in the real world instead of going into any crazy ideas yet in the beginning and end has a sort of surreal look about being a family as they talk about a poem that deals with life. That was the most interesting part to me actually and it was pretty cool that they started out that strong and ended in the same manner although it made me feeling like I wanted more of that then the other real life stuff.

The English voices are really well done, adding to the whole feeling of family but I wouldn't expect less from Disney when they get their hands on a cute little show like this. Nonoko is a very believable 5 year old and sounds so cute. The show itself takes things rather literal and I believe that is because we are in the mind of this little girl and how she sees her life. The English dub really does add to this idea that we are seeing everything from the 5 year olds aspects. Plus the fact that Nanoko does not show up all that often. There are times that it deals with her but then there are many times that it is only the parents, son, and Grandmother.

The show might have been alright but it really isn't the best Ghibli film in my opinion. It was slow and very slice of life-ish that it was hard to watch.

Many different art styles
7 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The story line is a little different then the actual game and the language is a bit forced. They used old time language which means its heavy in old English. But the voices are perfect and don't change from what they should be.

The worst parts that they changed the facts of who sowed the cross on Dante's chest. It meant more when Dante was the one that placed it on him self. It showed he was willing to look at his sins where when it was placed on by some supernatural creature, then it shows he is forced to look at what has happened. It is a little bothersome that they had to change the whole reasoning for that.

The art style changes a bit threw the show like each circle was drawn by a different person, and I think it's because there were way too many people working on this one movie. Each director pretty much got a piece of hell to work with and I guess they never shared the design of the main character with one another because Dante and Virgil really do not look the same though out the show. The only style that feels like it belongs is the first one, mostly the reason why I had kept watching. The first one shows a style much like a American Comic Book character. Normally I didn't like that style, but I like it for this one. It has a rather nice idea of a hero who had to overcome everything for the one he loved.

As the story keeps going, sadly, some of the circles seem to be cut short and its sad because some of the areas could of just excluded a bit to give them equal time.

How Virgil acts, it seems that he is trying to make Dante destroy Hell. Take it as you will on that but it's what it feels like to me. For all it's worth, It is a good one even if the art style changes.

Cool World (1992)
4/10
Sex version of Roger Rabbit
7 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This, like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit', has a mixture of live action and cartoons. Unlike Roger Rabbit, this is clearly not a show for children. The story line pretty much brings a man from our world, a convict actually who draws a cartoon comic book called "Cool World." In his loneliness, he created a rather interesting stripper girl who gets a life of her own kind of. Women are highly sexualized and some of the animations are really scandalized. Think Jessica Rabbit to the extreme although she is pretty much of a badass. I like how they created her as a girl that will take what she wants without any problems.

I actually couldn't get into the show. It's pretty much stylized for the time it came out without really anything that would probably relate to this time. It was OK if you like this type of thing and did talk about love breaking boundaries but otherwise, it really didn't have much of a reason for being besides a trip down sexual cartoons.

The animations are out side the box, going between good and really bad. It's pretty equal to the acting actually. Lots of characters are off and full of profanity. Everything is flat when it comes to the cartoon world, but it would be so much better if it was more like toon world from Roger Rabbit and just drew it all in. It would have felt so much more consistent if it was. The only character that was drawn rather well was Holli and Frank's girlfriend Lanet, the stripper girl. I did like the dark look and feel of the surreal cartoon world. Threwout the whole show, they never once actually showed the naked female figure although they hinted at it and showed what they called 'mating' (pretty much they have sex).

When they get to a point where Animated characters interact with the real world characters, things get really choppy. When a real world character picks something up, many times, the hand seems to glide on the object and they can't really touch the animated characters without making it look like they are all in the characters head. I wish they would at least use a green screen for those parts. You can tell the animation was done after they filmed the live action stuff and it looks pretty much like crap in those areas talking in today's standard. I don't know enough to say if it was in their time as well.

The voices could be so much better then this. I have seen much better stuff voices for this date and time. Now I am mostly talking about the animated characters.

Space Jam (1996)

Space Jam
7 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well this was a really fun show to actually watch. I guess part of it was because of the fact that it had Michael Jordan in the show. I used the live in Chicago so the Chicago Bulls were a bit nostalgic for me. This has an interesting show because it had a lot of the same idea's as Cool World and Who framed Roger Rabbit. The whole idea that toons live in another dimension then the real world.

When you look at the old looney tunes and the newer idea of them, a lot of things stand out. First, the personalities of the characters had actually been altered to make them a bit more rounded. Characters actually care for each other even though they still fight between themselves. One that seemed a bit forced though was the new character, Lola. She didn't have much story line and served as a love interest for Bugs as well as the only female in a mass of male characters.

I love how they pretty much brought Michael's family life into it. It made it really relatable because we saw how he was just like everyone else. He has a loving wife, a couple beautiful kids, and a wonderful house with all that he really needed to be happy. He has friends as well (Although many of them are rather famous like Bill Murray.) and does many things that we would normally do. Unfortunately, Michael is many things, but not an actor. He is alright but he doesn't seem to show much emotion when it came to the tunes and destroy some of the emotions in it.

One thing that bugged me was that in the start of the show, Michael has turned into a ball and thrown around by the Nerdlucks. There is a point at the end of the show that Michael actually asks if he can do toon physics to win the game. If he was turned into a ball and thrown around, wouldn't he know that he can? Not only that, but he never uses it except for those two times.

The animation is rather good though the characters seem more 3D then they have any business being I think. It just feels a little out of what we are used to. It's not all bad, but does throw the show off when they go from old cartoons to the newer CG stuff. When cartoon physics kick in with the live action characters, it looks rather off as well, and you can actually tell that it was pretty strange photoshopping rather then CG. It's OK for the time I guess but it's still really easy to tell it's off.

There really were no problems with the voices. They were really good and had the same feeling as the older version of the characters. The Nerdlucks were done well, each having there own personality and some stand out better then others.

Feels pretty similar to the TV version
7 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is actually an interesting first movie showing how the Powerpuff girls and Mojo Jojo was born. It's actually rather touching to see how much the 4 actually get along on the first day. It shows they are pretty normal except for the powers. They just want to have fun and be loved. They have trouble finding acceptance in a world that doesn't really want them.

I have no idea how the mayor has even been elected because he is really stupid. Nothing he does really makes any sense. When the town is being destroyed, he goes and gets a pickle instead of wanting to figure out how to stop it. And even after worlds, all he is worried about is how they 'killed' the pickles.

Mojo Jojo is really odd. First off, 2 days after he is given his 'special powers,' he said that he was discriminated for too long. 2 days is not a long time.

The art style is perfect to the actual TV show. I really don't see much difference between the two. Everyone has a very black large outline that makes them stand out from the background which is normally diluted tones of gray or pink. Some characters are overly round where others are exaggerated angles. In fact, the Professor is all angles, and even his shoulders don't move when he is stretching out his neck. The girls are rather chibi looking even though this is an American made cartoon. The whole show is rather stylized in itself.

The voices are alright, it is an American Cartoon so you don't have the choice of hearing two different voices for the characters. Sometimes they do have problems in the script though. I can't stand how Mojo Jojo talks, mostly in third person and has a rather rapid fire monologue with a lot of pauses. Actually, it's like the old Godzilla shows where they were dubbed over in English. He also seems to use really really bad puns too.

It was alright, but its not really a movie.
7 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So besides the title not making any sense, the story is alright. Sadly, it feels like an episode instead of an actual movie. I felt I was watching a couple of anime TV shows. There were about 2 or three stories that were there about how Munsu ends up getting a Sando, a servant, and then ends up going to an Island for the rest of the show. It didn't stand out next to any other anime show that came out in 2004. It felt lack luster as a movie but as a TV show, it would have done much better.

The storyline was basic to many shows where we have a wonderer who is alone and ends up getting a companion… might I add female companion… who follows him around all the time. Only real difference is that she can actually fight but she doesn't listen to his every word at times. They never explain if Munsu has something wrong with him and that's why he has a inhaler or if it's something to do with the power he bears. There are a lot of open endings that they really should have filled in if this was going to be its own movie.

The animation has a slightly interesting mix of CG and animation. It isn't that it doesn't fit right; it just is a bit easy to see that this is CG and this is not. There are still images mixed with the CG that just looks a little off in the beginning. As the show goes on, the only real thing that shows up CG is the dark soldiers he summons. Half the time, the background would look very detailed and the only time when it doesn't fit with the characters is when they are in the desert because the color of the characters really threw me off. There is a headband that Munsu wears is actually supposed to be left on a cross but he wears it throughout the whole show.

The voices and music are what I would expect for the time it was made. There is nothing that seriously stands out for the voices although I do sort of like Munsu's more then any other. Other then that, not much else.

Bartok the Magnificent (1999 Video)
4/10
Suffers from being put next to the better Don Bluth movies
1 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I never thought for once that they would make a show about the little white bat from Anastasia but they did it and I have to say, it was a little bit annoying but overall OK. The story seems to take place many years before Anastasia happens which makes me wonder how old Bartok really is. He seemed the same age as when he was in Anastasia but yet we see Ivan Romanov as a little boy. This boy pretty much has a knack for having bad advisors. Both advisors he had were trying to overtake the thrown. I know that it's a simple thing to want to fall on advisors overthrowing the thrown as the bad guy but they could have done something else. Ludmilla just seems like she is over charismatic and has no real potential as a enemy. It's only near middle of the movie that she seems to have something going for her. The bear Zozi pretty much has no real character but to push Bartok into doing what he's doing and spout play quotes. He had nothing more then to be a layed back side character with no real meaning.

The artwork was rather disappointing. I would have thought that it would be better coming from Don Bluth and how nice Anastasia was compared. It just felt like it was rushed to get out the studio with its sort of odd scenery. Sometimes it was well done with lots of detail but other times, it felt like they used the wrong colors for some things and took way little time with them. The world outside the city of Moscow was very disappointing because it looked like a fantasy land rather then the landscape of Russia.

The voices were pretty well done though seem to be rather downcast next to the artwork. Each character was what I would imagine them to sound like. Sadly, Bartok, the very center of the movie, was really annoying. He was good as a sidekick for a villain but when he gets his own show, the whole movie suffers from his raspy voice. I don't have anything against the voice actor but just like Iago from Aladdin, this was one of those characters that shouldn't be singing. The songs and music were sub standard and not really memorable so it doesn't even feel like I should bring them up.

It's OK, but not something I would go out of my way to see
17 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well, we should all know the story of the Wizard of Oz. Young girl named Dorothy ends up in this fantastic land called Oz after her house is swept away by the tornado. Well, this happens after so there may be some spoilers involved. The day after she goes home, she finds herself back at her home but the tomato did a number on her home and farm. The appraiser comes and pretty much tells the family to leave but Dorothy doesn't want to leave.

The story is a bit interesting in how they have created a world that was very close to ours including a great wall made of china and even people to go with it but sadly, it feels a little shallow. The characters are forcibly this or that. Nothing really in the middle. The only thing that I think is any good about the characters is that they do grow more then how the Lion, Scarecrow, and Tinman did. We see a lot of emotions with them that was not really shown before but I feel that we had almost the same style of characters. A Military man who falls in love, an owl who can't fly and is to smart for his own good, and a princess who is so high and mighty but is rather fragile. I have noticed in almost all the stories of Oz, we have these groups of three that are supposed to be pieces in her dream and have some sort of something to do with her getting over what is going on. This is not one of them. The characters on the side don't seem like they are what strengthens her. In contrary, she strengthens them.

So there is a lot of jokes placed into this show and it just feels like half are forced. I had found myself laughing at very few jokes and the rest were just me face planting my desk at how stupid the joke was. For example, Great Wall made of China is funny, an owl called Wiser, face palm. Jester was where more of the face palms came from with his very stupid jokes even though he kept saying he wasn't like that.

The animation is very good for the most part but the heads are rather big. It has a very cartoony look to the show with bright colors on both the outside of oz and the inside of oz. That's what I don't really like about this version. I loved the way that the live action had with the real world being grayed out.

The voices were actually not half bad for some of the characters. Dorothy's was a little annoying as well as Wiser when he talked to much and the Princess's singing voice. Patrick Stewart surprisingly is in it by a old tree who they end up naming Tugg and he does a rather good job in creating a rather laxed tree who takes things as they come. I also liked Martin Short as the Jester. I seem to like a couple of his characters he plays and so it's not surprising that I would like his over crazy voice for a rather silly enemy.

It was alright, but not one that I would care if I saw it again or not.

Dead Space: Downfall (2008 Video)

I guess its OK...... for based off a game.
26 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a rather odd one out know where. I had no clue what this was about and if it was connected to anything. All I knew was it was an animation and the artwork looked rather American style. It was rather confusing watching the show because they didn't really explain much about this. Just a warning though, there really is a lot of blood, guts, and nudity in this show.

The show gets really odd the more and more you watch it with people acting oddly and bodies turning up all over the place. It seems a lot like it could be a really good video game story rather then a movie. A really horror based video game with people disappearing and going crazy. Of course, it is and this was based off of the story. I guess they did good in that aspect but in another aspect, it just means it should not of been a movie. The rest of the show becomes way too political to keep my interest. We have a hot shot security leader battling against the head of the ship shes on, and then there is her security team who is pretty much the crackshot, the rebel (why is she here again?), the no name computer expert, the big guns, the rookie… am I reminding you of a particular team in any other horror show or game? The animation looks like an American comic book with its well-detailed faces and sunken cheeks that push the cheekbones out. The cg part of this show is kind of lack luster, feeling like they were thrown in though the textures were as close as they could get. Women's bodies seem to be very voluptuous no matter who they are with large breasts and hips and a rather tiny waist. The main character seems like she is very top heavy to the point she looks like she can break her back. Some of the models and backgrounds look like they are steampunk with dark and dingy colorings and rust color specks on most of the objects. I do have a question, what is with the strange lights on the back of their jackets? Then never explain what the hell that was supposed to be though I guess I can estimate that its to show if your alive or not. Not sure why they would need that though. Other parts of the show seem to be pulled right out of a video game. Some things aren't consistent like for example, when one of the characters wives kills herself, she slices the neck almost clean off but when he's carrying her, her head seems to be attached again.

The script makes me feel rather confused as they don't explain who everyone is and what the hell they are doing. Not like it matters as all of them turn out to be unimportant. I mean, they end up being nameless stereotypes to space age horror movies. The voices most of the time seem like they are just reading the script of being forced to act surprised. Lots of characters seem to have only two personalities, mad and upset. They all seem to have the same personalities and are pretty generic when it boils down to trying to put a name to a face. There is a lot of swearing, sex talk, and racial and gender related discriminations.

The Return of Jafar (1994 Video)

Not a great sequel.
6 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So… wow… what should I really talk about here? It's bad, so it's hard to center on just one thing. The characters are choppy, the story line is unexplained for the most part, and the voices make me cringe most of the time especially Iago. I mean, It was fine when he had very little screen time but this feels like its catering to him. I mean, Iago's singing voice is so freaken bad! IT HURTS MY EARS! More on that in the voices part.

According to Genie, he is supposed to have less power now that he's free but we see him doing all the things he used to before he was free. There is also the fact Aladdin hasn't married Jasmine and yet even though they are engaged, he does a lot of stupid stuff in order to get money and give it to the poor. What is he? Robin Hood of the desert? The Personalities of all the characters might have been good in the first, but they should have grown by now. Also, the Genie is way to annoying.

Seriously, they just milked this series for all it was worth. Even the 'new villain' feels off and I don't even know if we can consider him a villain. He seems to be too dopey to be a villain.

The animation is cheep and unappealing for most of the time. Most of the wonderful styles seem under played and I think part of it was the long gap between the two movies. There is also a lot of inconsistencies in the artwork.

There are way too many singing in this show again. And it has to be Iago's singing it looks like it. Again, I HATE THE SINGING! I don't see anime doing this all the time… and please don't try to tell me about an anime they did like this.

A great Classic with a little known name
5 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When I was young, I liked a lot of princess stories. One was this interesting take on the Swan Princess. It's a normal story of two people being arranged to be married by there parents and forced to see each other so many times that they end up falling for each other. It's not uncommon for royalty to want to marry royalty but the fact that the mother and father actually want the two to fall in love before they marry was always something I liked about this story. It wasn't that it happened in a short while, this happened over the course of their whole life. Then at the point when the two were almost in love, Odette is taken by a evil sorcerer and turned into a swan. Normally the story would be done as a ballet but this was done as a cartoon and they did a pretty good job turning it.

The characters are actually quite lovable from a frog thinking he's a prince to an army style puffin and even a interesting little sidekick for the prince. I fell in love with almost all of the characters and just the whimsy of them all.

The animation is pretty nice for the time it came out and for the fact this was done in cell shading. Small misshapes do end up happening but they don't take away much from the overall of the show. The work they did with water looks so beautiful, especially the transformation of Odette from swan to human and back again. It's bright and colorful, with characters more then likely in proportion to each other. It's a amazing piece of work for when it was done and I kept watching it, trying to see what would make me hate the animation but nothing I saw would break it for me.

I could of went without the musical numbers in this show though one or two of them made me chuckle including the first song about them supposed to be getting married. It may have gone on a little too long but it was fun because as it went on, when the peasants were singing, it was always about what a holiday they would get and lower taxes when the two wed. It really showed what people would probably be thinking in that time and gave it a feeling of realism. The voices were not all that bad when it was singing or even talking, though we fall into some sounding a bit more forced then others. Odette's sounds a bit to high when she is singing as though she is forcing to hit the high notes of the song when her parts are all high. Darek's Mother's voice is a bit naggy though at times that helps the comedy and other times it just feels a bit overboard.

It's just an overall good show and a great one for children even to this day.

A Interesting twist of a old classic
2 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
For anyone who knows me, they could tell you that I love twisted fairy tales and messed up concepts. This one is a twisted tale of The Frog Princess. We have New Orleans around a time when it was at its finest or at least what I would call its finest. When the jazz was hot and good soul food filled the streets. Because of a witch doctors spell, a prince is turned into a frog and then ends up turning our main character into the same. Well, it's like a bad version of Beauty and the Beast meets Cinderella a bit. I don't get what makes princes so desired to be turned into animals and beasts but it sure happens a lot. What makes this show a bit more fun is that our main character wasn't even supposed to be turned into a frog. The witch doctor didn't have a thing against her; she didn't have an evil step mother to hate her, just a simple girl trying to make it in the world. How she changes is just the case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The artwork is just what you would expect from Disney, pretty good and rather colorful. It was also surprisingly dark for a children's show. The imagery got really dark compared to other shows (Well, except for Snow White). I have to say the shadow man is right up there with Queen Grimhilde, aka The Evil Queen. There were also parts of the artwork that reminded me a lot of The Swan Princess. Just how bright the rest of the show was and some of the artwork with the water.

The voices are what you would expect for something based in New Orleans. It's very stereotypical but I'm not against that at all. In fact, it gave the show all the charm it needed to step it out of being just a stereotypical Disney flick. We don't have our normal white damsel in distress but a strong black woman who is independent and her voice carries that strong feeling right down to how she sings. It's the prince that seems more like the helpless one. The prince voice did get a little annoying at some points. Just the French accent that they forced to him made it a little hard to understand some of what he said though they did a good job holding it back enough.

Sort of like another one of their shows
19 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This was actually a rather good movie showing a child's hopes and dreams. It's interesting how they created the show to be a story of children's hopes and dreams. It's a beautiful idea when you see the basics but then there are some things I have questions about. One is that of the other characters besides Jack and their background. One of these days, I would like them to show what the backgrounds were of them and how they became who they are. Another thing is that the idea of no one seeing Jack even though a lot of the frost was placed where it probably shouldn't have been. It wasn't everywhere like frost tends to go but in special areas. I can understand it for the movie and this might be me just trying and failing to make logic but that's how I am. On the plus side, I don't think I will ever look at a colorful hummingbird again without thinking that it is probably a little fairy. Yes, that was a joke but still, the textures and how they told the story was pretty well done.

The problems that I have with the story do not outweigh the good that the story has to offer but they do make me think of giving a little bit of a lower score. I feel sad that DreamWorks decided to use the same idea of Jack Frost talking about his name and giving a small narration in the beginning and near the end just as Hiccup did in How To Train Your Dragon. To me, it felt like they were just trying to make a copy of the story with how the characters were created and acted. Santa like Hiccup's Dad, Tooth Fairy like Astrid, Easter Bunny like Snotlout, Sand Man like Fishlegs and so on. I mean, sure they had a big success with How To Train Your Dragon but they didn't have to make a copy of it just to get money coming in. On the other side, they didn't copy it fully with a different bad guy and the fact that the action was throughout most of the film. I love twisted tales of characters I came to love but I still could not get over the strange feeling I was watching a lower version of something else I saw.

The designs of the characters are amazing. There are some that you pretty much know what they look like, Santa with his large belly, Easter Bunny pretty much a bunny… but then they add things to it. They change the design a little only to make it fun and playful enough for the show. I love their take on the Tooth Fairy though. Her bright and colorful feathers would have been something that I would never have thought of myself, being as I never really thought of the Tooth Fairy looking like a southern colorful bird. The textures that were given to the show was stunning as always with bright colors against dark colors though it just seems like they use that a bit to much. One day, I want to see a bad guy who is bright and colorful instead of gray tones.

Voices were rather good and fit the characters almost to a tee. I especially loved Hugh Jackman playing the Easter Bunny because of just how Australian he made the character. Each character played their role pretty well with instrumental tracks to complement it. If I can say one thing, its that the voices and music were done rather well and held the show together.
