American Horror Stories (2021)
Good writing/stories - too 'teen' and forced diversity
The good: I like the stories. The writing, creativity, stories I have enjoyed. I felt the have (so far) had the 'American Horror Story' quality. I appreciate the acting as well. Overall, if I overlook the negatives (below) I find I still want to watch the show for these reasons. Ignoring the teen-vibe, it's still got some AHS to it.
The bad: Like so many series right now, it's too 'teen'. Every episode so far feels like a teenage/high-school drama/scream show. It feels like a more immature spinoff the original 'Horror Story' series. I don't care that the actors might be 20+ playing teens - happens all the time - but I was hoping for some more mature AHS-like characters for this spinoff series. Overall premise, with individual stories, the writing and creative ideas... all good. The show focusing on a teenage demographic when the original AHS didn't... meh.
Last thing - while I like seeing more diversity in film, it's starting to feel a bit forced (almost like there's a quota they have to meet). I agree that society needs to be more accepting of our individual differences (110%), but some television seems to push the issue almost making the episodes feel more about that than general entertainment - overshadowing the storyline. Keep the gender/sexual pref/race/religion/culture differences IN the film, but don't make the shows about that (unless it IS a show about that). ** Note: this isn't meant to spark any controversy, just a personal opinion.
I thought this would be more a horror series and less 'Degrassi'.
The Human Race (2013)
Time not-so-well wasted
There were some serious flaws in with the mentality of a bunch of poorly developed characters racing for their life (many not giving the impression they actually wanted to live - unconvincing in their actions). The overall plot, acting, attempted and overused effects were very sub-par.
After actually sitting through this mess (pop, pop, splat), it eventually concluded the absolute wrong direction (I won't reveal anything, in case someone else wants to donate some of their downtime taking this in - personally, I want my 1+ hour back).
So as one of the other reviewers mentioned - much of the time spent on this movie was likely ramping up the IMDb rating and writing some rave reviews. Sorry to the fans, but as we're all entitled to an opinion, I will definitely be steering clear of any sequel, prequel, or literary releases, and at your own discretion, you have been warned - so depending how valuable your time is to you...
