Missed the ending
14 December 2023
This movie had such a great premise and an excellent plot but completely failed in the presentation. We are hanging in the edges of our seats for 90% of the movie waiting for something to happen. Little things happen throughout, but nothing conclusive. Sadly, that is all we get, more waiting for something to happen.

I was deep into the movie and really thought that it was going to get better. It didn't! Take my advice and ignore the hype. This is a sleeper that never wakes up. Give it a pass and let Netflix know that they need to be much more careful in the projects they choose to promote.

This one is off my watchlist, but will probably end up with a sequel!

A sleeper hit that's a must see!
6 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure how I missed this one! Morgan Freeman is gold on everything he touches and this is no exception. The Magic of Belle Isle is a comedy, romance and drama all rolled into one. I had no preconceived notions of this movie because there was no trailer available, so we just took a chance and in glad we did.

Monty is a writer who take a break in a quaint community. He spends his time next to a family of a semi-divorced mother and her three young girls. Now Freeman may be the posted star of the movie but the real star is Emma Fuhrmann who plays Finnegan O'Neil. She befriends Monty and her performance is excellent. The friction between the two is incredible and so real. She pulls off an excellent part and really made the whole movie.

The other love story is slow to develop, although as a viewer you can see it blooming. Virginia Madsen plays the part of the newly divorced Charlotte O'Neil who slowly falls in love with Monty. Watching the romance develop as Monty rediscovers himself, along with the side plot involving Finnegan, makes this movie a sleeper hit that I'm happy to have found.

I highly recommend taking the time to watch this one. And I really should have know it would be good, as Rob Reiner was the director.

Poor excuse for survivalists
4 September 2023
Wow compared to the original show, this is absolutely terrible! These people did not belong in the Canadian wilderness, they were so out of place. My wife and I spent much of the show laughing at how unprepared the contestants were. Sadly I have British heritage and my wife never let me forget it. All of these contestants should be embarrassed at the effort they put in, but I think the UK producers should be more embarrassed. The total lack of training that these contestants had made the show difficult to watch. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. I'm hopeful that IF they do a season two it will better follow the format of the original.

Two things I really disliked about the show. 1) the annoying "beeping" noise every time they started a camera and 2) the ending where they called the winner. I like the way the original series and the Aussie spin-off notify the winner.

Whether they're is a season two is yet to be seen.

Needs a remake
9 July 2023
I'm not a fan of remakes, but this one definitely needs to be redone. I've read the books and just by chance happened to find this movie and I went in with high expectations. Unfortunately it fails to deliver on most counts.

To begin with there is so much explanation of the Neanderthal language in the book that is missing in the movie. Anyone who hasn't read the book will have no understanding of what is happening at all. The language of the Neanderthals should have been explained much better. Without that explanation the movie is really lacking something.

The movie also is missing so much of the book, as usual, but much of what is missing was essential to the story. I just found that I was confused and distracted through the whole movie.

The one good thing is that it was filmed in British Columbia Canada and therefore offers some beautiful scenery. But that is about all I can say for good points.

But I wonder if Hollywood would consider this one for an epic remake. There are six books in this series and if someone like Peter Jackson got his hands on it, this could be done really well. But for now I guess that's just my dream.

Manifest (2018–2023)

Went downhill pretty quick
25 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When Manifest began it was an incredible premise and had great potential. For the first two or three seasons it was absolutely great. But to continue the series they stretched and stretched. The story took strange twists along the way.

I kept watching while it was on NBC and then it got cancelled without any real conclusion. It left me hanging and I needed to know the ending. Then Netflix picked it up for one final season and I was really hopeful for a big satisfying conclusion.

Unfortunately, Netflix failed! The final season took so many twists that made no sense, but again I needed conclusion! I made it to the final episode and got the "Dallas dream ending". Very unsatisfying in my opinion. Everything I had watched for five years never happened.

I'm not sure how it could've ended better. But this wasn't it. I'm just not impressed, but I'll give it five stars for the premise and the first two and a half seasons.

Drinkwater (2021)

Good Canadian content
24 June 2023
This showed up in my Prime suggestions so after watching the trailer we decided to watch. They typical Canadian emblems, Timmies and RCMP were included along with a whole lot of Canadian music as part of the soundtrack.

It was predictable, but fun to watch. Proves that Canadians can make a good movie if they try. The movie revolves around the Drinkwater family, Hank and Mike, and their very strange relationship. In comes Wallace, the girl next door, who Mike notices but not the right way. Mike is chasing the wrong girl as he chases a scholarship as well.

Things have a way of working out though as movies usually do. But this was a fun watch and as I said earlier the music was great.

My only complaint was the shot at my hometown, Winnipeg, but what can you expect from BC? LOL.

Waited a long time to see this...
20 June 2023
...and it was worth the wait. I cannot believe how well they pulled this off. From the beginning to the end you are toe tapping to the music. The characters are excellent, especially the NFLD characters, they were so relatable. The culture was perfect as well.

It is amazing how such a small cast can pull of so many different character seamlessly. There are costume change, minimal, that just happen onstage without really noticing it. The stage has minimal decoration as well and it's basically just chairs and tables, but somehow it works!

And the handling of the terrorist act was handled with dignity and care without minimizing it. But really it told as much of that part of the story as was needed, the real story was the love and caring of the people from Gander, who pulled off a remarkable feat at a time when the world had gone crazy.

We thoroughly enjoyed this production and wish I could've caught this live on stage.

Wasn't sure
31 May 2023
I saw a promo for The Traitors but wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed. I binged this one in less than two days and I can't wait for season two!

It's hard to review this without giving too much away. The characters in this season were excellent. You had villains all over the place that looked like traitors even though they weren't. You had traitors who were ruthless in the game and played an excellent part. This show came down to the final minutes of the final episode and it was an excellent ending.

The challenges they took part in were very "survivoresque " and some were a little lame. But still enjoyable.

His Only Son (2023)

So many issues
21 May 2023
This is one of the most important stories in the Bible and therefore is a story that needs to be told. Abraham is the father of many descendants including our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore this story needs to be treated with absolute respect!

Sadly this is not the case. The filler characters and stories only server to distract us from the story and ongoing conflict that Abraham is experiencing. Instead we're led down a road which contains thieves, robbers, murderers, etc. We are shown that these characters attack Abraham as he travels. We are also led to believe that Abraham's companions battle among themselves.

This could've been a really good movie of a story untold, but it lacks in so much. It is slow, it is sad, and we aren't allowed the opportunity to develop empathy for the characters, even though we know them so well.

We need a new Bible epic in the vein of The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur, but sadly this one isn't it!

What a way to start a relationship
10 May 2023
Boy meets girl on steroids! Imagine going to a foreign country on your third date with a person you barely knew. And when you get there you have to share the bed! That was a wake up right at the beginning. And then the date never ends because of the covid pandemic and you can't get home, so the date never ends!

To top it off, the guy is an influencer so he films everything, and that's the good parts and the bad parts! So when the date finally ends and they're able to come home, he has a really good video record to present as a documentary. And it's actually pretty good! It doesn't seem staged and doesn't seem like he set out to make a doc, it just happened. So we spend 60+ days with the two of them as they visit various places in Costa Rica during the lock down.

I was hooked from the trailer and really enjoyed this, but it does get a little cringe worthy as certain things happen. I found it intérêt that she hadn't told her dad who she was with until she absolutely had to reveal it.

This isn't something that I'd watch again, but it was pretty good and gave me a really good look at a beautiful place I'd love to see.

A Good Person (2023)

Grab the Kleenex box!
30 April 2023
Wow! I saw the trailer for this and thought it looked like a good movie for our evening viewing. Unfortunately I was wrong! This was NOT a good movie for us, this was a GREAT movie.

The story is about an accident that kills two people prior to a wedding. Jump forward a year and the survivor, Allison, is addicted to drugs. The father, Daniel, is mourning his daughter, while his granddaughter, Ryan, is lost without her mother.

Allison goes to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting and bumps into Daniel and the tears begin. The relationship between Daniel and Allison is strange, but Daniel especially struggles trying to raise the teenaged Ryan.

I struggles with the start of this movie because addicted Allison has a viscious argument with her mother that is a non-stop f-bomb attack. It was a little difficult to watch, but is probably pretty close to reality for someone who is struggling with addiction and missing her "fix".

Other than that one scene, this movie had me hooked. My wife gave me full marks for this choice, even though she used a box of Kleenex while watching it.

The subject matter is hard, but we'll worth the watch.

Absolutely fantastic
4 March 2023
As usual, Tom Hanks delivers. We expected a light hearted comedy about a grumpy old man, we were only half right. It is certainly about a grumpy old man, but it isn't really a comedy.

Hanks plays Otto, a man struggling over the loss of his wife, and he wants to end it all, but things keep happening to prevent it. His new neighbours move into his life and gradually Otto's attitude begins to change.

There are many other things going on throughout this movie that provide a great back story. From lost and renewed friendship to a major tragedy that affects Otto's life more than we could anticipate. And then there is the ever present cat!

That isn't to say there are not moments of laughter, there are, but be prepared to have a Kleenex box close at hand.

Rarely have I been disappointed with any of Hank's roles and this one hits it out of the ballpark.

Tough to watch
20 February 2023
Didn't really know much about this story going into it. My wife wanted to watch something that was real and true and this popped up so we gave it a try. About ten minutes into the movie and it became hard to watch. It was really intense and difficult subject matter, but we got through it. I HATED that man from the second I saw him and my hatred never diminished throughout the movie. I know he is only an actor, but he played it so well that it was him I hated and not the part.

The young girl does an excellent job of portraying a girl in a really difficult situation. Listening to the thoughts on her head gives us a unique view on what to do and how to do it. How the real Kara remained calm under intense pressure like this is amazing.

I've seen people say this is for all ages, I don't think so. I think it needs to be seen by people in their early teens, but I wouldn't want younger kids to be exposed to nightmare inducing things like this.

I'm not a fan of Lifetime movies at all, but this was a good one. I spent most of the movie wiping the tears from my eyes. It was that good. I'd have given it a higher rating except for the poor performances by a couple of the actors, but don't let that stop you from watching it.

That was not good!
7 February 2023
So I have it two stars mainly due to the music! The acting was awful and the story was really weak! Aside from that it was an absolutely terrible movie. Filled with campy dance sequences and plot holes big enough to put the sun into. ( How did Danny catch up to Sonny so fast when Sonny was riding a moped?)

The "special effects" were definitely out of the '80s and should've been left on the cutting room floor. And the roller skate sequences could've been dropped too.

The ONLY redeeming quality of this movie was the soundtrack that was mainly penned by Jeff Lynne, although I'm sure he looks back at this and wonders why he did it in the first place! But money probably was the main factor.

There are many much better musical based movies to choose, give this one a big pass.

A must see for sure!
5 November 2022
When I first saw the trailer for Where the Crawdads Sing, I KNEW I had to see it. When I eventually got the chance, I KNEW I had made the right choice. This is a gripping drama from the very beginning. The story drags you in as you see the development of "marsh girl". The beauty of the locale is evident from the opening scene and continues to the end.

The story is riveting and is a mix of current time and flashbacks that work together so eloquently. The romance is just enough to show that love is not always where you expect it. And the drama keeps you going until the very last scene. You honestly cannot predict this one.

If there is one flaw that I could find, it was that "marsh girl" was too perfect. Her hair was always clean and arranged, her clothing was always clean, well pressed, and in good condition. My thoughts of someone living I the marsh is that she'd not have access to modern conveniences so she should not be so perfect. But I wouldn't let that detract from the movie at all.

This one is one to see for sure.

Clint is showing his age
26 October 2021
This is by far the weakest movie the Clint Eastwood has been a part of. The acting is terrible, the story had a lot of promise, but it just doesn't get out of the gate. Clint literally shows his age as he stumbles through the movie. His dialogue is poorly delivered and leaves you wondering what happened.

I was looking forward to seeing another "Clint" movie. Unfortunately this wasn't it. And I don't think we'll see another one to make me forget this one.

Why can't I give a negative star?
19 October 2021
There are bad movies and then there are bad movies and this is a BAD movie! The acting is terrible but bad acting is eclipsed by the terrible CGI and even worse plot.

If I could say something good about this movie, I would. But I can't. If you have an hour and a half to waste and you can't find a rerun of Jerry Springer, then watch this. O the er wise skip it and save yourself from this abomination.

HG Wells must be rolling in his coffin.

Back into the box
14 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Bird box should just disappear. Weak plot, unlikeable characters and just too many unanswered questions. I waited and waited for it to get better, but I spent two hours waiting for nothing to happen.

I don't care that we never find out the cause, but I would've at least once to see the "creature" but I guess no one had one designed.

Pass on Bird Box and spend two hours in the dentist chair instead.

If it wasn't based on a series ...
13 December 2020
... it would not be a bad movie. But to take seven (or possibly eight) books and take it down to an hour and a half does a great disservice to the series. The acting is good, the plot is feasible and it works, except that so much is missing. The character development is flawed and the storyline is so far from King's books that it barely resembles the books, except in name and the names of the characters. Each book could've had a full movie spot instead of trying to condense it to one movie.

War of the Worlds (2019– )

Slow and tedious
29 October 2020
This was a struggle to watch in more ways than one. The switching between English and French was annoying. It's difficult to keep up with the "action" when you must read subtitles. And "action" is in quotation marks because there is very little of it. For a civilization that travelled millions, if not billions, of miles to confront earth, they have the absolute worst in clumsy robotics to do so. Where are the flying machines or drones that you'd expect from an advanced civilization?

I keep watching expecting to see something great, but alas I feel that it won't happen. This is "War of the Worlds" in name only and has no resemblance to the original masterpiece. My advice, don't start watching, just let it go past you and hopefully in oblivion.

Ultimate Low Budget

Three guys in a car, tracking the night skies, have contact with something from outer space. It's been done before, but not like this. A three man crew to write, film and edit and they do a pretty darn good job of it. It has its cheesy parts, but it ends well. Not a waste of two hours.

There are things missing and huge holes, but that's to be expected when you condense a life down to 2 hours. But watching the process of creating the biggest hits in history is amazing. But most of all watching the recreated Live Aid performance was worth the price of admission.

Denzel has another hit
5 December 2006
Denzel Washington will go down in history as one of the greatest actors of his day ...and this movie once again proves why! With a plot as complex as this one is ...Denzel holds his place and keeps you riveted to the screen. From the opening sequence (quite spectacular) to the thrilling (although mind boggling at times) conclusion ... I sat and watched without blinking. I loved this movie ...I plan on seeing it over again just to catch what I missed.

The trailers for this movie did it justice by not giving away too much ...but giving away just enough to tempt you. A fabulous story featuring action, suspense, romance and of course a sci-fi touch too. This is one the whole family will love.

The Prestige (2006)
9/10
Well worth the money
24 October 2006
I had seen a number of reviews of The Prestige and they were all giving it an extremely high rating, even from reviewers who are notorious for giving low ratings, so I went into this movie with very high expectations and was not disappointed. There is plenty of time for character-building as the movie runs over 2 hours, but do not fear, this movie is not filled with "filler material." From the opening credits to the final credits, you are enthralled with what is happening on screen. This is not a high-action movie, but it does contain tense scenes that get you to sit on the edge of your seat. As the final credits began, the theatre that I was in broke out into spontaneous applause, something that I have only experienced with one other movie (and that was a premiere night).

The movie centers around two rival magicians who are friends at the beginning of the movie, but due to an unfortunate incident, they become bitter rivals. They then seek to "better" each other as they develop the "ultimate" trick. The movie takes place in turn of the century London and is very pleasurable to watch.

With so many movies coming out these days, it is difficult to pick one from the rest, but The Prestige jumps out as one that should be seen. BUT be warned ...this movie has a number of twists and you should be careful of what you read or listen to prior to watching it. If the twists are revealed .. it would certainly spoil the experience for you.
