After Earth (2013)
Not as bad as some people are saying
I gave this one a seven.
I thought that the special effects were mind blowing. There are fantastic vistas to enjoy, which have a very huge WOW-factor. The movie is worth seeing just for these. Jaden doesn't do such a bad job, but I have noticed that since his last movie, he is speaking more and more like a thug, and it was distracting to me. I hope he does something about that. These are supposed to be technologically advanced humans, and Jaden sounds like he just walked out of the ghetto.
Will Smith does an excellent job. It is not under acted, like some are saying, it's just that the character he is portraying is very stoic, and Will does a really good job portraying that. Saying the acting is bad would be like saying Leonard Nimoy is a bad actor because Spock shows almost no emotions.
The movie had an odd sleepiness to it. It reminded me of the Hunger Games. This may have been because, like the Hunger Games, the plot was so incredibly predictable. You know what is about to happen at any given point, and there was nothing "riveting", you are never "on the edge of your seat". The movies is certainly an action movie, but it is definitely NOT a roller-coaster ride.
Still, I think some of the reviews are a bit harsh. The movie is definitely worth seeing at least once, maybe even 2-3 times, depending on your tastes, but it won't be a classic.
In a Spiral State (2009)
Worse Movie Ever
I watch a lot of movies, but none of them have ever actually proved painful. Sometimes a bad movie can be fun to watch because it is cheezy or unintentionally funny. This movie isn't like that.
This movie is below poor. It is unwatchable. I lasted about ten minutes before I was seized with an unholy urge to grab a fork and tear out my own eyes to avoid watching it for even another second. Fortunately there was no fork around.
I began screaming my most closely guarded secrets at the screen because I became convinced that some unseen interrogator was attempting to extract information from me by forcing me to watch this unendurable piece of "art". Fortunately I had a moment of lucidity and was able to stop the movie before being driven insane.
This movie is not "trippy", there are no "hidden meanings" in it. There is no "intellectual" value to it in any way, shape of form. It is just a mind-numbing mess that may pull a suicidal reaction from you.
