How I Met Your Mother: The Burning Beekeeper (2012)
A Counterpoint
I personally enjoyed this episode when I re-watched it.
It was nicely written and it was fun to watch the actors hit their marks and the different sub-plots play out in the three rooms. As the episode progressed a number of mini-mysteries cropped up: How could such a well planned party fall apart in just 5 minutes? Who is in the bee- suit if it isn't Lily's father? Who screamed in the other room and why? What is bothering Ted and why is he so aggressive toward Cootes? Why did Lily drop the wheel of cheese and stomp on it after being so enthusiastic about it only a few minutes earlier?
In closing, I didn't think there was a need for every episode in a 9 season sitcom to complete the story of meeting the mother and as far as useless situation comedy distractions go, this was a pretty good one. I only wish Martin Short had been in more episodes of the show.
This episode gets a 9/10 from me.
Quills (2000)
Quite possibly the best story ever told on film
While this movie is not for the faint of heart, anyone who has the guts to watch it will be treated to what I consider to be one of the finest stories ever told on film.
The Marquis' love for his insidious form of self expression drives the story from its almost light hearted beginning to its (not entirely?) tragic end when the plot resolves/comes full circle. Underlying themes: the loss of innocence, love vs. lust, art-imitates-life-imitates-art, religion as/vs government etc etc are all explored with such intensity by the actors that I can't help seeing the characters from "Quills" every time I see their actors in other films.
Hats off to Doug Wright & Phillip Kaufman!
