Chhapaak (2020)
A magnificent movie by Meghna Gulzar
This movie is an absolute masterclass, and will surely leave you speechless.
If I were to review it in one word, I would say it's a movie worth but tough to watch. After Raazi, another magnificent masterpiece from Director Meghna Gulzar, who does absolute justice to the subject. We have already seen movies being made on various issues of society but seldom does it happen that this is done with such a finesse that the issue is talked about without getting things melodramatic or overly documentary. It portrays the pain of the acid victim so closely that it gets hard to not let your heart go for the victim. I always felt that the lead actress of the movie, Deepika Padukone, was overhyped but her performance in the movie, as the acid attack victim Malti, makes me change my perception. She has delivered a very very powerful performance that is without any doubt not just her career best but also one of the best ever in the industry. She lets us feel the sense of loss and a feeling of hope through her innocent eyes deprived of dreams. There were many scenes where I had to gasp for breath as my heart felt heavy feeling the pain of Malti. Vikrant Massey, as someone running an NGO for acid attack survivor, turns out to be a perfect cast who not only with his dialogues but also the body language, brings out the anger and frustration against what is happening in the society. I loved the scene where Malti despite being the victim wants to celebrate a favorable ruling from the court, while Vikrant despite being not a victim is angry and doesn't want to celebrate. There has been a lot of controversy around the lead actress attending anti government protests in JNU but that shouldn't stop you from watching this masterpiece. If you do so, you might miss a chance to feel the pain of acid attack victims, who have been deprived of their ambitions for life, just because somebody could buy the easily available acid and ruin her life for the sake of revenge or jealousy. As one of the lines in the title track sums it up -"Arzoo the shauk the wo saare hat gye, kitne saare jeene ka dhaage kat gye, sab jhulas gya, jaise dhoop ko grahan lag gya, chappak se pehchaan le gya". You have to see it to feel it. Absolutely must watch. RATING 10/10
P.S. wait for sometime and you will see the rating at IMDB getting corrected as more and more users rate the movie.
Panipat (2019)
Brilliant
When it comes to directing period films, there are only two names you can rely on in Bollywood. One is Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the other is Ashutosh Gowarikar. What a movie it turned out to be. Brilliant! Superb! Epic! A movie that has its own strengths and doesn't rely on star power. My greatest fear was Arjun Kapoor but he actually deserves a praise for portraying the character of Sadashiv Rao so well without trying it so hard. Infact, I found his character better than that of Ranveer Singh of Bajirao Mastani and Padmavat. On the contrary, the expectations from Sanjay Dutt were so high that perhaps his screen presence didn't look as terrifying as in Agneepath. Kriti Sanon has perfectly moulded herself in her character, much better than flamboyant Priyanka Chopra in Bajirao Mastani, and more Stoic Deepika Padukone in Padmavat. Although the supporting cast could have been better, one man Puranjit Dasgupta deserves a mention for his dreft performance as Najib-Ud-Daula. Though Ashutosh fails a bit in reaching a climax as cinematic as Bhansali's Padmavat but he manages to get it better than Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. The visuals are astonishing and create a sense of the era when the historic battle of Panipat took place. Although Ashutosh has focused quite a lot on aesthetics, but still Padmavat wins here by a margin. The background music is good, and the songs do support the narrative. Where 'Mard Maratha' and 'Mann main Shiva' gives you a sense of pride, 'Sapna hai sach hai' touches your heart. While the first half focus on building the plot, the second one is all about the actual incidence. The movie might have taken some cinematic liberties with respect to presenting one of the most important chapters in Indian History, but it does instill a sense of patriotism in the audience. That's a great feat for a movie and after Swades, Ashutosh Gowariker does it again, although in a different genre.
Raazi (2018)
perfect masterpiece
RAAZI: An amazing masterpiece from Meghna Gulzar, that unlike typical spy movies, refrains from showing indo pak animosity in black and white, but showcases things with more realism, where the enemy is shown not just as a heartless monster but human being with feelings and emotions. The story is gripping right from the beginning and no where does the movie loses its pace. Dialogues are carefully thought out and will make you think more than what is said. Alia drives yet another women centric movie so beautifully that you never feel that she is playing the character. It feels she is living the character. She has dexterously portrayed the various emotions her character undergoes, from a innocent daughter who gets married across border for her dying father's last wish, from a caring bride who loves her new family as much as her parents, from a patriot who sees her loved ones going away one after the other, and a proud spy who is content with her role, no matter what all she suffered . Vicky Kaushal wins your heart despite playing the role of her husband from other side of the border. The entire supporting cast deserves an applause for giving so much finesse to their characters. The screenplay is fantastic with attention given to even the smallest of the details. The song Ae Watan sung soulfully by Sunidhi Chauhan and Arijit on music led by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is surely going to give you goosebumps. RAAZI is a heartfelt tribute to those names that get lost somewhere amidst victory celebrations of the wars they made us to win. It's one of the best spy movies as it talks not about the war but mostly of humans who suffer on both sides of the war. RATING: 5/5
Neerja (2016)
An absolute masterpiece
NEERJA: This is a Masterpiece, a movie that's going to be kept in the league of classics. It seldom happens that a Director achieves such a finesse in his first major project but Ram Madhvani, who has been directing award winning commercials for over twenty years, defies all conventions giving us an amazing experience that reminds us of the types of Dark Knight. The best thing Ram did is to keep the dialogs in each characters' native language that gives it a feel of real time cinema. The background music creates an ambiance of tension making you feel traveling in the same plane that got hijacked in Karachi in 1986. The cinematography is so real as if you are watching the events happen live. The dark shades ensure that colors don't snatch away the tense mood throughout. The sets, the interiors, the costumes, the make up are so real to recreate the time when this event happened. And above all, it is powerful performances by everyone in the frame that keeps you holding your breathe, that keeps you getting lumps in your throat, that makes your heart beat fast and at some times makes your eyes wet. Sonam Kapoor has unexpectedly given her not only career best performance but also one of the best Bollywood has witnessed over the years. Her body language, costumes, make up, expressions, and slang all look perfectly aligned with what could be expected out of the protagonist. Shabnana Azmi as her mother nails it down with her speech in the end. She proves that art is age defiant and she still can give audience the goosebumps. And the character that despite carrying no stardom yet succeeded to leave a strong impression on my mind is that of the anger dominated terrorist who reminded me about the Joker in The Dark Knight. His intense performance really deserves an applause for it is he who succeeds in making audience feel the terror the victims might have felt in reality. Too good a movie with perfection delivered in every aspect. No way it could have been even a little better than what it is. This one is going to stay a long time in my mind. DEFINITELY A MOVIE NOT TO BE MISSED FOR ANY REASON. RATING 10/10
Dilwale (2015)
Injurious to health, brain, psyche, and of course your love for movies
If critics have rated Dilwale 2.5 stars, i would rate Tamasha 250 stars. Total non sense and cheap movie bringing disgrace to seemingly evolving Bollywood. Even school plays are better. Except the songs, nothing is there to see in the movie. For SRK, Kajol and Rohit Shetty it would be counted as one of their worst movies ever. It's Sanjay Mishra who emerges out as the only actor who delivers yet another stunning comic performance as a guy having penchant for rhyming his sentences with brand names. Second it's Kajol performance, though far away from Mishra's performance, that brings out intensity on the screen. Very poor script, even worse screenplay, uneven editing and pathetic performances by rest of the cast. Comparing it with legendary DDLJ would be an insult to the latter. Going to watch it can kill your belief in Bollywood itself. Its horrible. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED. But if you still believe paid reviews, go and take the risk! RATING 0/5
P.S. - I have been an avid SRK fan but this one took test of my follower-ship
Tamasha (2015)
absolute masterpiece

TAMASHA: This is the one ! The masterpiece long due from Imtiaz Ali. The one that leaves you spellbound. A perfect Tamasha for movie lovers. An unconventional love story that talks more about self identification, that is romantic but more philosophical. It's a culmination of recurring themes that Imtiaz Ali's movies have carried so far. Unlike ROCKSTAR, it immaculately uses music to complement storytelling right from Chauhan's 'Matargasti' in the beginning to Rehman's 'Tu Koi Aur' in the end. A part of 'Heer' is saved for the climax where it makes the right impact to the audience. Where 'Wat Wat' is a realization song taking you back to protagonist's past. 'Agar tum pass ho' brings out intensity in emotions. Deepika after her debut, looks so much charming for the first time that you would fall in love with her especially in the first half, post which she brilliantly brings out the confusions inherent in her character. But the movie all together belongs to Ranbir. His imitation of Bollywood classy's brings him out as lively as you had seen him in BARFI. Post interval, he adroitly shifts to a character that seems psychic due to his inner conflicts. You find his two personalities in total contrast yet only subtly different from each other making his character make believe and this is where he proves his finesse as an actor. Don't miss this Tamasha. It is much better than all Imtiaz Ali films (including ROCKSTAR) in the past and one of the best movies I have ever seen with such a perfect screenplay executed diligently. It's a vintage wine. More you feel it, more you enjoy it. PREM RATTAN DHAN PIO audience might prefer to stay away as it might be too harsh on their brains and psyche. RATING 5/5
