Ju-on: Owari no hajimari (2014)
A horror turns into comedy.
It's awful. Avoid it. I waste my money on this, definitely need a refund. It's so nothing in the beginning and super funny at the end. My friend sleep the whole movie and only wakes up when the whole cinema is laughing. Yes, we all laugh at the ghost/alien(or whatever that is). And did I tell you we were watching it at midnight. Yes, that boring. You might enjoy the comedy but only if you can bare yourself through the whole movie. Half of the audience walk out.
I always love Ju-on movies but this one is definitely a miss. The cast is OK but the directing, the plot, the ghost all wrong. Overall, you get the point.
Rope (1948)
Simple, subtle and adorable.
Rope is a movie about two successful and rich boys who have this idea of superior should triumph the inferior. Yes, by killing the inferior. The idea is logic but definitely passionless. The theme itself is very complex yet the movie is very simple and I would say adorable too. And the best part is, it's inspired by a true story.
We have a saying, "Alfred Hitchcock always done it" in my book and yes, he done it again in this movie. James Stewart's performance is subtle and beautiful as a supporting yet very commanding. The two main actor is kind of annoying but it is understandable since they are quite the villain in the movie. The gay theme is ambiguous but people nowadays can definitely see through it(I know I can). I totally recommend it if you are tired of a very long and tedious movie just to prove a point. This movie with running time 80 minutes is definitely the opposite and give more.
12 Years a Slave (2013)
It's too perfect.
I watch the movie after hearing all the Oscar buzz and well, it won the best picture eventually. Most reviewer will consider this movie is the best one of 2013/2014 but as for me, it lacks something. Everything is there, the cast, the plot, the setting, the (controversial) theme. However, it needs something that you can remember even after 10 years watching it. There's nothing to converse, but it's perfect. Maybe that's the problem, it's too perfect. It's like having the best chocolate cake (forgive the pun) , but what you crave is probably a cheesecake or apple pie. You will say it's the best one but it's maybe not what you enjoy the most.
But if i have to applaud, it's definitely the cast. They are very memorable in their own different way. Michael Fassbender did a fantastic job in it. He is my definitely new one-to-watch after the movie and as for 2014/2015, you will see a lot more from him. Overall, the movie is flawless but you probably need to sleep after you finish it.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Less is definitely more
I just watch the movie in theater recently and it was OK. Yup, you don't want your movie to be 'ok', at least 'bad' define something. What the movie lacks are concentration and structures. The story is largely interesting with every characters have their own struggles and unique identities. However, the way the movie portrays them is very predictable and somehow a bit juvenile. The animation values are very visible here that they make it less realistic and approachable. Some of the comedies are quite hilarious but a bit predictable and too much. Comedy doesn't have to be loud. Those flaws just make the movie lacks tension and seriousness. Most of it is trying to appeal the mass audience with those commercial values.
What I'm suggesting they should do for the next installment is they should find the focus and strongly hold to it while attaining some commercial values that are needed in this type of movie. It is understandable that they try to grasp as many audience as they can because this is the first one. However, audiences are getting smarter these days that they can see if there is inauthenticity values in a movie. You don't have to try follow the trend that most superhero movies always have but simply set a new one. Remember, those kind of unique identities that make movies such as The Dark Knight and Watchmen an instant classic.
Blue Velvet (1986)
Lower your expectations
I was recommended by my friend of this movie after I watch Mulholland Dr. "It is a must see Lynch's movie", I quote him. From there, I expect a lot from a man who done so well with Mulholland Dr. An eccentric myself, I'm a fan of the surrealist theme. Plus, I'm obsessed with Lana Del Rey's version of the song.
The expectations are probably just too high that it underwhelmed me. It's not a bad movie, just I expect more. The story is simple with some sexual and violence twist(obviously). The acting is OK, Dennis Hopper is brilliant as always. It just misses the edge that we need from a visionary. Everything is predictable and not a scene stood out. If you need a toned-down version of Mulholland Dr. then probably you should try this one but if you want more, this movie definitely won't give you one.
