Die göttliche Ordnung (2017)
In one Word: Awkward
I was really looking forward to see this movie. I always support Swiss movies being from Switzerland myself. So i was excited to see it. Sadly it is really bad. The worst movie I've seen so far this year. Before I want to start I want to say that i'm not against the message of the movie. I'm reviewing it as a movie.
First of all not everything is bad in this movie. I liked the cinematography. The scenes in which the main character was riding a bike were very well filmed. Some shots were very nice. There was subtle imagery you could pick up. The set and the costume were nice too and there were some scenes that were funny. The narration at the beginning was also well done.
The film fails in every level when it comes to acting, writing and the characters. The main character was boring and uninteresting her journey was very predictable and poorly developed. Also the actress who played her did a very bad job. I haven't seen anything else from her so I can't tell if it was her fault or the directors fault. Some of the other characters were at least a bit entertaining. The old lady for example. The Antagonists were cartooney and unrealistic none of them had any motivation what so ever. The tone of the movie was also way off it didn't knew if it wanted be a comedy or a drama. The Swiss German that they were speaking was very forced and awkward. But by far the worst thing was the dialogue and the way it was delivered. The dialogue seemed like it had been written by a 10 Year old. The ending was also very cheesy and it could have been easily delivered just through visuals. But no they had to throw in narration so that everyone could get it. The movie overall was very boring and dull and there was no real conflict at all. The 90 minutes felt very long. The argument many critiques make is that it is good for a Swiss movie and you shouldn't compare it to an American production. If it was for budgetary reasons why this movie sucked i would understand that argument. But it worked on a technical level. You don't need to have a big budget for a good script you don't need to have money for good acting. There are many independent movies from other countries that are great even with a small budget.
I really wanted to like this movie but I couldn't. The acting and the dialogue was just poorly done. I really hope that the director is able to continue to make movies and make improvements. Because I could see that she is talented.
But overall the movie was disappointing and really awkward.
I would give this movie a 3/10
Rogue One (2016)
Pretty good movie
I just saw Rogue One and I thought it was good. However I have some mixed feelings about it. Now is it as bad as the Prequels no of course not. Is it as good as the original trilogy or The Force Awakens. No Way.
But now I'm going to say what I liked about it and what I didn't like about it. The best thing about this movie was the visual effects. This is perhaps the best looking Star Wars Movie ever. The visual effects were great, Gareth Edwards did an amazing job. What I really liked is how they showed the scale for example the small ships in comparison with the gigantic planets. The Death Star looked never so intimidating. I liked that they explained some plot holes in the original Star Wars. Like the explanation for the death stars weak point. It didn't feel forced and it played in with the story. The Action was amazing which brings me to my next point. It is a Star Wars movie that felt like real war we have never seen that before. What I think this movie did better than the Force Awakens is the humor. In The Force Awakens the humor often times stopped the movie and it didn't fit very well. This movie nailed it pretty well it didn't interrupt the story because they didn't make as many jokes and the jokes were actually funny. There weren't as many stupid callbacks to the original movies like in The Force Awakens. They kept it nice and simple. It first kind of bugged me whenever a character died in this movie. I even called it The Game of Thrones version of Star Wars. But the more I think about it the more I like it. They were fighting for the Plans and they even sacrificed themselves so they could succeed.
Now to the negatives The characters weren't as interesting and whenever someone died I didn't care for them. The ones I liked were Mads Mikkelsen and Donnie Yen. Mads Mikkelsen had an interesting conflict but he died very early in this movie and Donnie Yen was more or less just entertaining to watch but i couldn't really tell what his character was. Jyn Ersos character was boring. The dialog was sometimes very cheesy for example the reused lines like "I have a bad feeling about this". The Darth Vader scene was cool but it didn't fit at all. They just needed to show a Darth Vader scene so they just forced it in at the end. There were some random scenes in the movie like the tentacle scene at the beginning which took me out of the movie and didn't serve a purpose at all. The romance between Jyn and that other guy was forced. The Beach planet looked cool but it got really stale after a while. My last point is directing. Gareth Edwards is an awesome action director. We saw that in Godzilla and we also saw that in this movie. But he is not so good with characters and actors. I would love to see some other people directing a Star Wars movie. Here are some of my suggestions: Christopher Nolan, Alex Garland, Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Matthew Vaughn, Matt Reeves and maybe Duncan Jones. I think those people would nail the action and the characters. Anyway although my review may seem like I hate this movie I enjoyed it. I wasn't disappointed but my expectations weren't exceeded. I think if you like Star Wars you won't be disappointed. I'm looking forward to episode 8 and the Han Solo Spin-Off
I would give this movie a 7/10
Operation Avalanche (2016)
Some really good parts and some really stupid parts
Matt Johnson is one of the most inspirational filmmakers today. Although i didn't love his first movie The Dirties, his directing style is really interesting. i liked the dirties but I thought it had a lot of problems. So I thought maybe with a bigger budget he could do a better movie so I was excited for Operation Avalanche. I saw the movie yesterday and I have mixed feelings about it. Some parts are awesome and incredible. Some parts are stupid and boring.
But let's talk first about the good parts. I liked the score and the soundtrack a lot it captured the time period very well. They also captured the sixties feeling in this movie. I was always looking for some time inconsistencies but I couldn't find anything. It had great cinematography some shots were amazing. The improvised scenes in Nasa felt real and genuine. And the scene with Stanley Kubrick was just mind blowing. But by far the best moment in the movie is the car chase near the end of the movie. This was the best car chase scene i've seen since Children of Men it was so amazing and I think it was filmed in one take, which makes it even more impressive.
But sadly the movie had it's negatives. On IMDb it is credited as a Thriller and for a thriller it is really boring. I don't mind slow-paced movies, but some scenes in this movie go on for far to long. It had one scene in the middle of the movie were they used special effects and it just looked fake and laughable. There was a fight scene that you couldn't take seriously, but it was meant to be. And you have the same problem like in all his movies: the acting.
It isn't usual that a movie has so many things it does well but also so many stupid moments. I really hope his next movie will be better because i like Matt Johnson as a person and I think he is very inspirational. I really wanted to love this movie. I can say that i at least liked it better then The Dirties so he has improved.
I would give this movie a 7/10
Captain Fantastic (2016)
A different take on the living in the wilderness movie
So i so this movie today and i found it interesting. Sorry I know I have to say more than that so let me explain.
The cinematography was just beautiful. They really showed of the beauty of the outside.
The acting was decent. Viggo Mortenson was really good in it. George McKay was also good and i really liked Frank Langellas Performance.
The Characters were well developed and you could see where they were coming from. I liked the character of Frank Langella first you think that he is an asshole but as the movie progresses you could see his point of view and why he thinks that way.
The Beginning of this movie was great, i loved that they gave the family time to show their relationship, it was really easy to relate to them.
The Movie was also really funny it has some genuinely funny moments. I hate when movies try to be funny by being relatable and this movie didn't do that. When movies try to be relatable it comes across as cringe worthy and this movie didn't do that. It had one scene where it was cringe worthy but it was on purpose. I cringed so hard at that scene where Bo tried to marry that girl he just met. It was great.
The R-Rating was unexpected especially for this kind of movie. I did not expect to see Viggo Mortensens dick. But if you think about it there is a reason why it is R-rated. In this movie the subject Sex was treated like a normal thing. In one scene he just straight up tells the kid straight up how sex works. The movie says that sex shouldn't be so controversial, it's just normal. And i think with the explicit things they tried to tell this to the audience
And the final point that i liked is the commentary. Normally in those kinds of living in the wilderness story's. It's about a person who hates society and tries to start a new life in the wild. This movie critiques that but doesn't say that it's bad. It shows the advantages and disadvantages of both sides. And I liked that it was left up to the viewer to decide if such a lifestyle is good or bad.
But there were still flaws to this movie. The points that they were trying to make was sometimes a little bit too obvious. Scenes were sometimes going on too long like for example the dinner scene. And not all performances were that good, nothing terrible but nothing really outstanding.
Despite the flaws I really liked the movie and I'm excited for the next Matt Ross project. I would give this movie a 8/10
Sing Street (2016)
A very good movie
I went to see Sing Street today and I really liked it, it was the first John Carney movie i've seen so far but after seeing this i'm really interested in seeing his other ones.
The best Part about this movie was the music. It was excellent I loved it. I hope that a song will get nominated for best original song at the Oscars. The performances were pretty good, it was Fierda Walsh- Peelos first movie and he did a great job as the lead. But the best performance by far in this movie was Jack Reynor. Say what you want about the Transformers movie but he is a really good actor and you see it in this movie. The characters were pretty good and very likable and the chemistry was great. My favorite part was the slow song that they played at one of the gigs. It was very emotional and almost made me tear up. It was that great.
But there are some negatives in this movie. The story very clichéd at times. However the worst part was the ending. The last scene where they were out on the ocean with the boat. The effects of that scene were really bad i don't know why they included this Scene. It wouldn't have made a difference if they just cut it out.
But overall i really liked this movie and i would recommend it to music fans, fans of John Carney's work and people who just like an enjoyable Story.
I give this movie an 8/10
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
A solid Conclussion to the new X-Men Trilogy
I don't get the Rotten Tomatoes Score. This isn't a bad movie at all. Yes it has it's flaws, yes it is not as good as Days of Future Past, but I think it's still a well made movie.
The characters are well balanced in the Story I think each character had the right amount of screen time. The new characters were great although Nightcrawler's accent changed from time to time it didn't take me out of the movie. The old cast was great too. McAvoy and Fassbender played phenomenal. Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult etc. were also good. And the one guy that stole once again the show was Evan Peters as Quicksilver I think this scene was even better than the one in Days of Future Past and I would be so happy if he would get his own movie I think he deserves it.
The movie still has flaws, I think that the movie was a little bit too long and the pacing wasn't that good. And yes it is a nitpick but I think it's kind of funny that this movie is set 20 years after First Class and the characters didn't age one year.
I think this is a well made entertaining movie and you should watch it even if it has mixed Reviews.
7/10
Warcraft (2016)
Not his best work
I really like Duncan Jones. I think he is a talented Director and Moon is one of my favorite Movies. I never played the World of Warcraft Games and I only went to see this movie because Duncan Jones directed it. I had hopes for it but in the end I was a bit disappointed. It is certainly not a bad movie. I think it is one of the best Video Game movies, which is obviously not saying much but you can really see that there was passion behind this project.
Duncan Jones played World of Warcraft and a lot of the Actors and a lot of the Actors did to and you really can feel that this isn't a Uwe Boll movie or something. The acting was OK i guess nothing groundbreaking but it wasn't awful. The visuals weren't bad either although it was a little bit too much CGI. What I also like is that it was easy to understand and you didn't have to play the games to be able to follow the Story.
My complaints with the movie are the Characters and the story. The Characters weren't that bad, but at no point in the movie did i really care for them and i didn't feel any emotions when some of them died. The Story was predictable and also at times not progressing so that I got a little bit bored. Also sometimes there was too much going on and it couldn't focus that well.
All in all the movie isn't bad but it isn't good either. I think Fans of the Game will be able to enjoy it. I'm looking forward to Duncan's next movie and if you haven't seen Moon watch it is great.
