Outreau: Un cauchemar français (2024)
A thrilling and shocking story
This series has everything you would watch a true crime documentary for. Unbelievably horrible crimes, a failing judicial system, false confessions, media frenzies etc. It strikes the right balance between the accusers and the accused and shows the views of all parties involved. It asks a very tough question: should you believe traumatized children without any hessitation?
At some times it was hard to follow because of all the names, but in the end, it was a thrilling watch with some unexpected outcomes.
All other reviews here show a subjective view on the series, which is understandable with this topic. If people can't help but express their emotions in the review, you know it's a good documentary.
The Fabelmans (2022)
A movie by Spielberg, about Spielberg and for Spielberg
This is a very rare case of a director making a multimillion dollar movie just for himself. Of course Steven Spielberg is a legend with several of the world's best movies on his name, but this one isn't worth your money. It's just Spielbergs personal therapy session about his life, his family and his passion for films.
In contrast to movies like Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, this movie lacks a plot and interesting characters. It all feels like he tried very hard to dramatize his childhoud which, by the looks of it, wasn't all that bad.
Of course it looks great and it has that magical Spielberg feeling, but this isn't worth your 2,5 hours.
The Wonder (2022)
Slowly unfolding mystery
I always like a movie that keeps you guessing and intrigued, even if it's slow paced and The Wonder definitely pulls it off for me.
Cinematography, a great sound track and great performances by every cast member enhances this feeling even more.
The theme of faith vs fact is very intriguing for the most part and delivers in the end. People who claim this film is presumptuous definitely didn't get the bigger message.
If you're not sure about this one, but can enjoy a slower paced film from time to time, it's definitely worth a try. You'll find out soon enough if it works for you.
Only negative thing I can say is that it has so unclear side steps and I didn't buy the love interest. Other than that, it's definitely better than the usual Netflix films.
American Murder: The Family Next Door (2020)
It's hard to say it's great, but it is.
This documentary got me hooked within minutes. Stepping into this family's private life with only original police footage and personal homevideo's gave the most realistic image to start a horrific story. The mystery surrounding it made me feel instantly anxious of the outcome. The tension rises to unbearable levels until the climax hits. I wouldn't recommend this to young parents or anyone who likes to sleep right after watching this, because I won't for some hours... that's for sure.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Too much and too shallow
The Greatest Showman isn't really a movie since movies have character arcs and a plot. This is just hysterically flat characters being hysterical, whether its their acting or singing. And I know it's a musical and musicals are usually more extravagant. I don't mind that, but not in this extreme overdrive, please. The pacing is at lightning speed. Not a moment passes by where a character reflects on what's happening or takes time to make a choice. I seriously had no clue at times what I was watching because of the rushed pacing.
This reflects in the production design, costumes and visual effects as well. Its all too bright, glamourous and above all superficial and flat. The movie has no second or third layer in it's message. It's all in your face "look at this and feel like this". That doesn't work for me. A film is supossed to be influential on a subtle level. This isn't. The message of the movie is a great one, inclusion of all types of people, but presented in such a bombastic way that it completely surpasses its goal. Not a single character is relatable since there is no history or further explanation. The characters are flat and don't react naturally to the events happening to them. You might think that I'm just not a fan of extravagant musical-movies but I absolutely adored La La Land for its characters and subtle use of music. This is quite the opposite.
