Annihilation (2018)
I love my husband so much I just have to screw my coworker
She loves her husband so much, and she is grieving his death so much, that she can't help screwing her coworker, which we have repeatedly thrust in our face by constant flashbacks. That's not normal. That's more Hollywood BS trying to normalize promiscuity. That alone makes it a no.
Apparitional (2014)
faithful execution of a tried and true formula
This is your standard low budget horror movie about ghost hunters who finally find the real thing. There's a formula for that kind of movie and this movie follows that formula. I like that. If you are a horror buff who likes ghosts then this movie will deliver the emotional roller coaster ride that you expect. For me that makes it a success. I enjoyed this movie and recommend it.
Also, all the protagonists are decent likable people. I really like that in a horror movie, and IMO it's one of the reasons why Asian horror is often so much better than US films. I want to like and care about the characters on the screen. In this movie that is easy to do. That fact alone makes this movie better than similar fare like Grave Encounters.
From Within (2008)
Portrayal of Christians laughably bad
The portrayal of Christians in this movie is so bad that you would have to be entirely ignorant of the religion to suspend your disbelief. You have Church members beating other people up, lying, fornicating, kidnapping, and committing all manner of violent crimes, and not despite their religion, but because of it, in the name of the lord. It ruins the whole film. It's like watching a movie about orthodox Jews and somehow they're all at Sonny's eating barbecue. It just doesn't happen. Or like watching a movie about the army where are all the rank insignia are wrong. If the Christians had been portrayed more realistically, like committing crimes without simultaneously preaching, or even more realistically, if they weren't portrayed as Christians at all, the movie would have been much better. It's too bad really. It was a good idea for a horror movie but the stupidly unrealistic portrayal of Christians ruined it.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Scary and sad but uplifting, great acting
Jennifer Carpenter really made this movie. She has this nice wholesome side but she's also very believable as the young woman who is terrified by a demon. Her facial expressions and bizarre postures give the movie several very creepy moments.
I also really liked the priest who, despite being ridiculed by lawyers and psychiatrists, just kept on doing what he could for this poor tortured girl. The priest was admirable.
I liked the ending too. It was noble and uplifting despite the obvious sadness.
PS I don't know if Annelise Michel was really possessed or not. There is some audio of her on the internet that certainly sounds demonic, but please take a moment and offer a prayer for her and all the others who are called to fight evil in whatever form it may manifest itself.
