Thunder Force (2021)
Completely and utterly...hilarious
Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. It's just what you would expect from a Melissa McCarthy movie. There are a few gross scenes, like the raw you know what....well, you've been warned. And as for the poor reviews....let's just say that a subset of society gets really salty when their demographic isn't portrayed as the heroes. Get over it.
Sugar Rush (2019)
Light and funny!
An absolute comedy gold with a great plot-line. From the sisters to the villains, this is a must watch! Not the mention the unexpected fantasy elements and great special effects! Highly recommended.
Black Box (2020)
Psychological horror
Definitely not your run of the mill ghost etc horror, but still super creepy. The sound of those broken bones alone sent chills up my spine. Tight pacing except for the first few scenes. The story left enough breadcrumbs for the viewer to follow. I definitely recommend. 2 points removed because, for some reason, the casting choice for the women and children was to have them be significantly lighter than the men, an annoying trend.
3022 (2019)
Great move (slow burn)
I loved the realism of the movie - the way humans can disintegrate, and make the most illogical of decisions when faced with catastrophe. It takes the "what if" space disaster movie premise to its extreme. It also questions what it takes to survive; to keep going, and how we react when what we take for granted, or what we love is, taken away from us.
The Feed (2019)
Ignore the bad reviews and give it a go
If you're a fan of sci fi with philosophical elements, then this show is for you. It starts out with an interesting premise and takes us down an unexpected route: technology meets family dynamic meets deeply flawed characters.
I could say that I don't know why there are so many bad reviews, but...this show does show a ton of strong, diverse characters. And not just tropes and tokens. Actual, full rounded characters with personalities and more than one line. I guess some viewers were expecting their usual smorgasbord of an all european cast (plus one or two tokens) that save the day? Well, you're not going to get that. As I said, the show is truly diverse. It also shows people as they truly are - capable of making the stupidest, most illogical decisions (after all, we are at a time when mask wearing is political. So yes, some humans are incredibly illogical). Quick note: at one point, I thought it was going to the route of horror zombie flick - glad I was mistaken. Now, who wants to talk about Ben? Most frustrating character by far.
See You Yesterday (2019)
Great movie. Why so many bad reviews? Hmmm?
Summary: two Brooklyn teens have an expo coming up; they see it as their ticket to a better future providing they wow the judges. With items borrowed from their science lab, they think they've discovered a process for limited time travel. They eventually succeed but trigger a series of unfortunate events that they keep trying (and failing) to undo. The end suggests that this might become a continous time loop.
This is not a fluff movie. It starts that way initially but builds up the tension from fun experiment/ I'm gonna get back at ... to serious real life consequences. You can feel the anxiety and frustration of the main character. Plus, it gets the established consequences of time travel right (at least compared to a recent blockbuster movie that will not be named *cough* *cough* *Avengers* *cough* *cough*).
So yes, 9 out of 10; It seems some people just like to judge a certain subset of movies more harshly than others.
Pontypool (2008)
Stupid movie
I would give this a minus 10 if it were possible. Seriously?
Synopsis: 3 People not trapped in a radio station relay what's going on outside to their listeners. That's the whole bloody movie - at least up to 42 minutes, which is when I stopped watching. Couldn't get through this borefest.
Nothing much happens in the first 20 minutes except for one idiotic jump scare. Hand on the window....oooooo scary! Then there is a blackface skit....yes, a blackface skit....oh yes, now I really care about the inhabitants of this dumb town, don't I? Then the reports started coming in. Then some idiotic lines in Spanish about not translating into English...
Bottom line - stupid movie for stupid people...don't waste your time
Carriers (2009)
Predictable drag
Trite, predictable, boring movie that's essentially a "this is what we had to do to survive tale".
So people died - well, I didn't care. They were unlikeable. I had no sympathies for them.
And seriously? The only minority shown is a dead one? What was the point of the racial slur? To show the viewers that the guys in the masks were aholes? You know, it would have been better if you had kept them guessing. "Oh look there's help. Finally! Maybe. Oh wait...damn! Human nature 1; Decency 0.
Epic fail!
The Unborn (2009)
Very good horror movie
Not quite sure why this is getting such bad reviews. Oh wait - the incessant complaints about clichés - as if every new movie isn't a regurgitation of earlier ones; to an extent. Heck - I hear quite a few out of Hollywood are even remakes; I bet they still get great reviews especially if they're the remade to death Super Hero flicks *rolls eyes*
Anyhoo, I thought the movie was quite good and original. Items that made it original include the source of the hunting coupled with the twin aspect; an attempt at a rational explanation of its source; the Jewish exorcism (never heard or seen that before).
The plot developed quite nicely; it built and ebbed especially around the jump scenes, of which they were a few decent albeit one-dimensional ones. No it's not as nuanced as some other horror movies; yes the plot is relatively simple; and yes, those underwear shots were quite unnecessary. But, good movie overall.
After Earth (2013)
Good movie - why all the hate?
People are such sheep! Following the tune of the Master who bleats bah bah baaaaad movie. Well, for those who can think for themselves, this was actually a good movie. It's the sort of movie that set a certain role for the characters - the loving, understanding wife; the cold-hearted Father (you'll learn why over the course of the movie), and the eager-to-please son, who finally triumphed because he looked inwards instead of outwards for approval. Will Smith played his part effortlessly; his son could have a better range of emotions, but, he still played a very believable role, especially when he stood his ground.
A solid 7; but because of all the hating, we'll give it a 10.
