Dark comedy at it's best
19 October 2007
I actually rented this movie expecting to be disappointed.

We laughed almost the entire way through the film, and it was so strange and hilarious that I intend to purchase it at my first opportunity. You might need to possess that certain type of twisted sense of humor to enjoy it. But if you do, you'll enjoy it immensely.

Every single member of the cast turns in a fantastic performance. Even characters who are seen for mere seconds become memorable. David and Kate Hewlett are obviously siblings, but they actually capture that antagonistic sibling relationship very well.

These are the type of independent films I wish were being made. It is smart, funny, and well shot.

Really two movies, one good, one bad.

This film is actually two movies. There is the "human" element of the love triangle between Ben Affleck, Kate Hudson, and Josh Hartnett. Then there is the actual war film.

The war film is one of the best I've ever seen. It's moving, it's well made, the effects are fantastic. They should also be commended for not portraying the Japanese as horrible, evil people. They humanized them, they made them people, not just enemies of America.

There are shots and moments in the war film that made me hold my breath. There was beauty and sadness, and it's just well done.

The love triangle, the romantic film at the beginning and end of the movie? One of the worst things I've ever seen. I had no sympathy for any of the characters, I had no reason to care for them. They were cookie-cutters of people, and they did the most idiotic things trying to make more romantic tension.

If you could take out the entire love triangle, just remove it, you'd have an excellent film. Sadly, this one is just "ok" if you fast forward through those parts.
