Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
I'm rooting for the zombies
TWD has most people griped with the storyline, however some of the recent "filler episodes" are a distraction and do little to add to the story, however I digress. So I've watched the first season of FTWD and like many reviewers here think the writers are either too lazy to make this series any good or they are relying on TWD to bring viewers to watch it.
In TWD you don't want the main characters to come to harm and hope that they survive another episode, however with FTWD the main family characters are not like able at all and I'm rooting for the zombies to eat them. They either make dumb mistakes or their reactions to events are just too unreal. Have the writers done this deliberately so we shout at the TV or is it just a badly written script?
Many serious zombie films etc get the fear factor right and you sit on the edge of your seat wanting the characters to survive, but not with FTWD.
SPOILER ALERT: Can you believe that they would leave the gate to the compound open, not giving a dam to those they left behind? if they were a family of social miss-fits maybe but the farther of the family is supposed to be a teacher, really?
I hope season two is better otherwise it's not worth watching, unless you like shouting at your TV?
Ex Machina (2014)
Umm, I don't think I watched the same film?
I'm not going to go too deep, but I clearly did not watch the same film as some of the reviewers here that gave it a high score. The author of the story clearly had a good idea, unfortunately the film makers were on a shoe string of a budget.
You watch the whole film waiting for something to happen, in most other films your blown away with the twist in the story etc, however this film left me wanting, and when the end came I thought to myself "is that it"? If your determined to watch this film first look up the "The three laws of robotics" by Isaac Asimov, then make your mind up. If as humans we create AI don't you think we would include these three laws? And where has the idea for this film came from? ah yes think of the Frankenstein films this is just a modern take on it.
American Sniper (2014)
Keep a open mind
There appear to be a lot of American haters in these reviews, and I felt compelled to add this review.
I was unaware who Chris Kyle was prior to watching this film, so watched it with a open mind. We all know the politics of the Iraqi war, this film was not meant to answer the rights and wrongs of the conflicts, it was about someone who joins the Seals and uses his talents as a sniper.
As a soldier you protect your own, if you're facing an enemy who hides behind women and children and puts them in the line of fire, who are the monsters? Someone mentioned that if the Iraqi war did not happen we would not have Isis, how deluded can you get! Many Muslims are radicalised through the use of hatred and history going back as far as the crusades, and target the easily led, and the last I checked American military doctrine does not allow the beheading of non-combatants, which we are witnessing at the moment by Isis animals.
BTW I enjoyed the film leave the politics to the politicians.
I Am Soldier (2014)
Who Dared and Lost.
What a load of tosh, if your going to make a film about the most famous regiment in the world then at least do it some justice.
I think the budget for this film was spent on the round of drinks in the bar of one of the scenes.
Then the hero of the story has mental issues, would he really make the grade? SAS soldiers are not super human but they have the mental strength to endure where most of us mortals would have given up thats what separates the successful candidates.
Our hero makes the grade and 3 months on goes on his first mission, what? wheres all the weapon/survival/combat training, I think in real life he wouldn't leave Hereford for a while.
Then we come to doing the mission, again no expense spared here? and appears hurried to get the film finished, if you were hoping to see some SAS tactics used, you will be sorely disappointed.
If you want to watch a film about the SAS, although now long in the tooth you could do worse (as in this film) and watch "Who Dares Wins".
I noticed Mr Richard Kemp was one of the military advisor's, what did he advise the director on? the colour of the combat uniform? with Mr Kemps background you would of thought the film to have a bit more authenticity.
BlackJacks (2014)
Seal Patrol? No aquatic animals in sight.
I watched this film cause someone gave it a okay review, and I thought I was going to watch a film about the U.S.'s elite fighting force, wrong.
Stop there do not waste your time or money on this film, as someone has already pointed out the title is very miss-leading, the characters may of been ex-seals so why use this title? should of been called "Mercenary Patrol" if any thing.
Then we come to the acting/story line oh dear oh dear oh dear, the most exciting part of this film was the shower scene, then you have to ask yourself why was it shown, apart from showing the young ladies obviously curvy body.
My advice to the director are words that remind me when I was at school...."You could do better".
Lone Survivor (2013)
Such a good film.
At last Hollywood can make a war film without all the American macho bullsh*t, the reason why? it is obviously based on true events and what is shown is the reality of combat.
I have not researched details of the original operation but I am hoping that this is a true account of events.
You don't get long to know the characters but you soon share their terror and hurt as they face over whelming odds, I'm a ex soldier so I felt for these guys, and not forgetting condolences to the families and friends I'm sure they will agree this film was a great tribute to their memories.
Ender's Game (2013)
It could of been better.
I love Sci-Fi films because it allows the writers and film makers creative juices to over flow. But with this film I was disappointed, not having read the book I take it from others who have commented that the film has not done it any favours? You have seen this film before with the gruff sergeant major giving the new trainees a hard time, the trainees jogging and chanting together etc etc, the sergeant major who will not salute the raw recruit, but the raw recruit comes through and makes it to become a officer the then said sergeant salutes the new officer, (you can almost hear the American national anthem in the background) Oh pleaseeeeeeeee.
Then you have this advanced alien race who look like ants? how they have managed to become advanced and build space craft etc is baffling.
Any way the basics is that the human race's chances to survive come down to the teenager with anger management issues wiping out another race of creatures, does it matter if it was a simulation or otherwise? there's obviously a deep thinking issue here.
I was surprised to see Mr Ford in this film, I can only assume that job offers were thin on the ground when he was asked to star in this film, I think that this could of been a much better film, it's certainly not the worst I've seen but there are better sci-fi films out there.
