Dragnet 1966 (1969)
Great Transition between old and new
I would honestly say that I think this is one of the best things Jack Webb has ever done. It maintains the feel of the original series and especially the 1954 film, while mixing in elements of the upcoming 1967 series, I would even go so far as to say this was better than the 1954 theatrical feature (which tended to be a bit dry). I loved Joe Friday's reaction when the child hugs him, controlled as Friday always is, but you can tell when you look at him that he is fighting back tears. I also liked the tribute to former partner Frank Smith (blink and you'll miss it). The rain played a big part in the climax of this movie as it did in the climax of the 1954 film. Check it out. Thankyou Shout Factory for including this in the latest box set.
Seven Pounds (2008)
Don't Be Sad Will, Hancock was Good!!
Wow! It finally happened, a major misfire for Mr. Smith. I am sure this looked like an almost sure Oscar on paper, but I'm afraid the finished product is far from award worthy. I have to say that I like Will Smith and I usually support his decisions, but this one is just dull & weird & plain old bad. It seems to me that "The Pursuit of Happiness" gave Will a Taste of Serious Recognition, and he liked it, which probably explains his decision to make "Seven Pounds". Not recommended at all, but if you must see it, wait for the cheap theaters or DVD. Will Smith is still likable, even in this completely unlikable movie, although you can practically see the "Acting Gears" in motion when you look at his face. Note to Will, you were great in TPOH & Ali, unbelievably great in "Six Degrees..." You don't have to do any "Serious" or "Message" movies like this one to get recognition.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Not Good !
Many people before me have spent a lot of time explaining what is wrong with this film, so I won't go into too much depth. The opening sequence was pointless & confusing (YES! it is possible to have a confusing car chase!!) and no pay off. No gun-barrel sequence, why? I forgave it in Casino Royale, but now I want it back. The entire movie was disjointed, hard to follow & repetitive. In CR there was a stunning foot chase, here they try to copy it not once but three times, with less than stunning results. The music... John Barry is still very much alive & in good health...just a suggestion. Gosh, nothing more to say that hasn't been said in other reviews. To sum up, I guess if CR was the modern day "Goldfinger", this is the modern day "License to Kill"
