Below Average Musical, Terrible Music
9 December 2017
This movie is not very good. The acting is below average with nobody you've ever heard of starring in the movie. The script is also below average and you can pretty much tell exactly how the entire story is going to unfold from the first moment the movie starts right up to the end.

The worst part of all though is the music. It is as if they just threw pocket change and some candy at a grade four music class and asked them to come up with some songs to put in a movie and they wrote and recorded everything in about ten minutes.

The dancing and choreography are also below average.

Skip this movie, you've been warned.

A Perfect Film
9 December 2017
2001 - A Space Odyssey is an amazing film just by everyday entertainment/'good movie' standards but also and especially as a technical achievement and great, almost perfect, example of filmmaking as art.

A lot of people dismiss the movie as 'old' and 'boring' and yes it can feel and look a little bit dated but considering a lot of what the movie is about is technology and 'the future', and the fact that our world today still has not caught up to what is happening (and what technologies are presented) in the film, you really have to hand it to Stanley Kubrick, who made this in the 1960s! No wonder people thought he faked the moon landing for the CIA! And boring, OK it can be slow sometimes, but you have to remember again how awesome and ground-breaking this technology and this kind of sci-fi storytelling were at the time. Nobody had seen anything like this before and in some instances we haven't seen it since. He didn't have CGI and almost everything was practical effects and large, very intricate and incredibly realistic sets and props.

It can be confusing but that is the nature of this story and its philosophical point ('what will happen in the future?'), and it also happens to be one of the things Kubrick did best. What a true artist and filmmaking genius he was!

Dynamite!
6 December 2017
Napoleon Dynamite is what you would have to call, by stealing the words of the legendary American television actor Jimmy J.J. Walker, DY-NO-MIIIITE!

It's such a fun, out of step, unique movie experience. I saw it in theaters after many of my friends kept telling me how different and hilarious it was, and even though the bar was set so very high I still loved every minute of it and wanted more.

Jon Heder owes his acting career to this, his break out role. And even though he has made some not so great choices since Napoleon Dynamite this role still stands out as a great movie and a very fine performance from him.

Uncle Ricky, Napoleon's brother, his grandmother, Pedro, the romantic interest, Diedrich Bader as the crazy America-loving martial arts teacher, even the strange old egg farmer down the road (who for some reason dispenses with old cows by blasting them in the face with a shotgun while a busload of children drives by?)... the entire cast is fantastic.

It's definitely offbeat with a plot unlike your typical comedy, but it's hilarious if you're willing to leave your expectations at the door and just let the bizarre, lovable characters take you for a ride.

It's worth watching for the dance number alone!

Wolfcop (2014)

Not Worth the Time
4 December 2017
Wolf Cop seems like it should be a good or at least a fun movie. The poster has a werewolf on it who is a cop, I mean how in the world can a movie about that not be worth watching on any single night of any week ever?

Well this is how.

Wolf Cop is disappointing on every single level. The effects are very bad, low level and amateurish. The transformation and horror shots are usually very close in to hide what's supposed to be going on, and all the shots are very brief with quick edits so they don't have to be very good.

The acting is also B-level at best with some really hammy characters and line delivery. But you can't really blame them because the script is obviously garbage, filled with painful plot holes really bad jokes (like dad jokes but the bad kind of dad jokes you can't even laugh at because they're so bad, they're just groan worthy).

Do yourself a favor and skip Wolf Cop.

Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

Great Spin off
27 August 2017
First off, no I do not think this show is as good as Breaking Bad. I don't think many people would claim that and I personally do not know anyone who watches both shows who would have that opinion. But that's fine, because Breaking Bad is one of the absolute greatest TV series of all time.

Of course it won't compare. If you are a person who loved Breaking Bad I'd say there's a very good chance you will also like this show very much (though not quite as much). That's not to say it's the same show. It still has great drama and characters and a similar sensibility, but Better Call Saul definitely leans more toward the dark comedy than psychology and drama. Yet even though the shows have a different feel, I think if you did not like Breaking Bad you probably also will not like Better Call Saul.

I'd definitely recommend this show and I don't think it matters much to be honest if you've seen Breaking Bad before.

Frequency (2000)

Good Time Travel Film
13 November 2014
This is a good example of a "time travel" science fiction movie, in a genre where there are many examples and most of them break at least one concrete law of time travel that leaves anyone with even a little common sense and intelligence scratching their heads and wondering "how does that work?"

Of course you still have to suspend your disbelief but as far as this sub-genre goes Frequency was a surprisingly good, and I would even go so far as to say it is a great example, of these time travel themed movies.

The acting is great. The star is recognizable of course and this is one of his best roles to date, but the cast around him is also very good in their roles.

Highly recommended if you like science fiction.

Classic CBC
10 February 2014
I think just about every household and every family in Canada must have this show on their television sets every Saturday night, it seems that it must be about the most popular Canadian TV show in the history of the CBC network.

I had no idea how old it was either, apparently it started way back in 1952? Wow that's a long time to be broadcasting the same show on the same network.

In a way it is sad that it is moving to another network soon I just hope that they are able to keep the show just as good as it is and don't change too much.

Not a huge fan of Don Cherry though.
