Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Don't believe the negative comments. It's good!
Honestly, they did a solid job with this recreation. Anytime you make a live action from an animation you're going to have critics that only have negative things to say. You're never going to have an exact likeness going from a cartoon to actual people, you can't because it's a cartoon and the characters aren't real. Yet somehow they managed to stick as close to the original as possible and did a very convince job. Book 1 is not my favorite of the Avatar saga, but watching it in live-action was exciting and seeing that they didn't skimp on plot or character development was great. I'm eagerly awaiting Books 2 and 3 and can't wait to see who they cast as Toph. Bring on the metal and blood bending!!!
No One Will Save You (2023)
Great original story with an awesome actress
Not sure what all the negative reviews are about. This is a solid movie that delivers both the nostalgia of classic sci-go as well as brand new concepts, which are few and far between in cinema today. To top it off, it's primarily focused on one character (the main character) who manages to nail the role and deliver ann impactful performance, all whilst carrying the movie on her own with minimal speaking points. There's a lot of depth here and if you're looking for pure shock and awe (which it does deliver) then you might miss it. Overall, this is a very entertaining flick and with impressive acting as well as original concepts.
Physical (2021)
You guys are killing me with these cliff hangers
I am an early millennial (1982) and I can honestly say that this show speaks from the heart. This show is it. It's real and it's raw, not like the majority of cinema that's been pumped out in this millennia. This show stays true to reality and not what Hollywood wants us to perceive as reality. The character dynamics are so relatable, tackling actual and realistic, historical male-female issues and infallibility that are still faced today. This goes beyond female empowerment and hits upon the real topic of sexism (and questioning the nuclear family) on multiple levels, everywhere from work and the home front to even within female friendships. This is so relatable for multi generations. I honestly can attest that the average woman (and possibly male, though I do not presume to speak as such) can relate to this series and that's what makes it awesome. It's relatable and it's real and frankly, it's what women (and men) of today need to see. We've come so far in such a short amount of time, and it should be celebrated, not forgotten! Keep the episodes coming, because I really want to see where this story takes us.
Normal People (2020)
Painful and beautiful
This story has so much depth and beauty to it. The tenderness and fragility that both characters portray is incredible to watch and so worth it. The emotions are raw and pure. Yes, there are a lot of sex scenes throughout the series, but for anyone that has ever been in love like that, then it's totally relatable and adds to the dynamic and intimacy of the plot. What it's really about is the layered attraction between two people who are innately drawn to each other and how life continuously tries to pull them apart.
Domina (2021)
One of the best shows released in a while
Great writing and impressive acting. Very intriguing characters and it seems to be historically accurate. There is so much going on that I was immediately sucked in. I sincerely hope they have a more seasons in the works.
The Power (2021)
Very creepy with a powerful message.
I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say that the main character was very convincing in her role and I'm appreciative of the actual story line that was hidden up until the third act. A good fright flick overall with a true story to tell at the core.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Wow! Finally something with a pulse.
This series better get picked up for a second season. The story and character development suck you in and it just keeps building. The first episode comes off as if there's not much to expect from the series, but that is totally misleading. Definitely stick with it once you've started, because this is one of the most intriguing and original story lines I've seen in a while. Can't wait for season two! They better not leave us hanging.
30 Monedas (2020)
Great series for supernatural fans!
I've really enjoyed this series so far. It's got great writing, incredible plot and very exceptional acting. The scenery is pretty outstanding as well. Overall I'm impressed and am looking forward to the story continuing. If you don't have the patience to read subtitles, then this is probably going to be out of your scope anyway. However, if you don't mind subtitles then I highly encourage giving it a watch. You won't be disappointed.
Stray (2019)
Should have focused on the antagonist more
This movie is very dark visually, so at times it was hard to see what was going on. This movie could have been better, but they focused too much attention in the wrong areas of the plot. The plot was interesting, but could have used a lot more development in terms of the antagonist. I'd say the one saving grace was Miyavi. He strikes me as a very talented actor and is able to display a lot of emotional depth for an otherwise very jaded character. Wish they had focused more on him as it could have saved the movie. If anything watch this movie for him. He's got talent.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Pure Awesomeness
This show is amazing! My daughter started watching it on Netflix and kept talking about some character named Hisoka. I had no idea what she was on about, so I figured I'd give it a watch to see if it was appropriate for an 11 yr old. I completely lost sight of my initial reason for tuning in. I got sucked in after the first episode and couldn't stop watching it.
The plot is crazy and unlike anything I've ever seen. Yes it is anime, but not full on Pokémon style which I can only watch about 5 minutes of. It does have mature content in terms of violence, but nothing gratuitous. My daughter hates gory, violent, scary film and Hunter X Hunter is none of those things as far as I've seen. The fight scenes are actually done in a tasteful manner and cut away or just imply of anything gets too heavy. I've honestly seen worse content in the typical Dreamworks films.
This show is a total win for me. Finally an original story line and not some boring rehash or sequel. Clever writing, unique and memorable characters and an amazing plot with twist after twist.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
Pretty Accurate
This movie was pretty accurate to the actual events. Nic Cage did a great job and kept his acting and antics very subdued which was definitely needed for the role. Hudgens did a great job as Cindy and really surprised me with the depth of her acting.
Kingdom (2019)
Amazing
Rich in plot and character development, Kingdom is a rare gem that is well beyond the mediocre cinema produced these days. Everything about this series is outstanding. The cinematography, the story line, the costume and scenery, the suspense and element of surprise. The acting! I'm in awe. Easily one of the greatest shows of all time, hands down.
The Great (2020)
Loved it!
There better be a season two on the way, because this has been one of the most entertaining series I have seen in years. Very well written and the acting is some of the best I've seen on any tv series.
Living Dark: The Story of Ted the Caver (2013)
Actually pretty terrifying
This movie had a solid plot thanks to the original story line by creepypasta's 'Ted the Caver'. There aren't many good stories/movies made about spelunking - a topic I find equal parts intriguing and terrifying - so this was truly entertaining for me to watch. The acting was solid and the tempo never let up. I read the story online first before watching and although the movie does take liberties it definitely did not disappoint.
Wish Man (2019)
What a great movie!
So glad I took a chance and watched this movie. I went into it not knowing anything about the plot and ended up being blown away by the beautiful story this told. You could spend another night watching the typical mindless smut that litters the tv - or you could watch a movie that will resonate with you and make you remember that you're a human being with meaningful purpose. I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know.
Damnation (2017)
Please Make Another Season!!!
It's hard to find shows like this one. Excellent writing, awesome plot lines and character development. A true example of a great story unfolding. Really wish they would be able to continue into a second season, but as a standalone, definitely well worth the watch.
