Alexander the Great
Neither bad nor boring , but certainly lacking
Though , you could pass your time nicely watching it , it is certainly lacking and it is obvious it has been created in a haste.
You know , Alexander was not called great for nothing.
And being great as he was, his life, has a lot of elements, that need to be addressed .
His conquest alone of a considerable part of Asia, has not been exhausting only for himself and his people ,
but also for any future historian willing to review his deeds and evaluate the man in depth, and finding themselves frustrated under a ton of information to review and present it to public in an artistic and concise way.
Already through episode 4 , of the series and they seem to have forgotten completely Tyre and Gaza . The series jumps from Issus to Egypt as if nothing has happened.
The series makes no real effort to describe his upbringing and only makes some mentions on the transition of power from his father's death .
It tries to be pragmatic at times to provide some useful insights , on parts of Alexander's campaign and it deserves recognition for this. But it is too little.
Others will also notice the big diresgard on the details and the philosophy of the fighting of the macedonian army, which will pass unnoticed for the bulk of viewers who know little or nothing about Alexander's life.
Alexander's life was crucial to what we are today as a modern civilization , meaning that it was too much for a man to have such an inpact, while it takes centuries and whole nations for such an effect.
Ok , this is an improvement on the attempts of docuseries at Netflix , but they still have a lot of work to do . They do know that they sell on a global audience , the average knowledge of which about Alexander is poor and they probably bet on it to make east profit with less of an scientific and artistic effort.
They don't go as far as to claim that Alexander was a chinese prince from a mongol father and a japanese mother, or a black Apachi in contact with the Aliens(cough cough Cleopatra), but they need futher refinement.
The docuseries does not deserve one star , as many , rightfully disappointed, judged about it, but it is not a gem. Considering , though how many of Netflix's series are one star and touted and advertised as exceptional , Alexander stands out as good.
Let's hope they have not done such a poor job with 3 body problem coming out in March .
Red Notice (2021)
Entertaining movie
That is missing a lot lately.
Maybe some details were not perfect. It is a comedy heist if you can claim
such a thing exists.
After making us bored to death with "action-fantasy" movies, Hollywood at last
offers us somethign more palatable that can actually entertain.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
It was an ok movie.
I am not going to exaggerate and give rating like 10 or 1. I vote 8 because this is my overall impression. Then, again I think episodes 1 to 3 were the best, while most viewers disagree, but that's just me.
And I totally agree about removing Han Solo And Luke Skywalker from the story.Han Solo and Luke Skywalker had to go sometime. Get over it
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
A worthy successor
I am forced to vote 10 , because there are extreme people who vote 1 or 2.
The movie is just as good as the first one and maybe a little better.
The only reason, some are not satisfied is because it's not a new concept. Of course the first impression leaves a more distinct memory in us. It's always like this. But being mad because it does not affect you as a novel story, is unfair.
Now , objectively the movie is a 7-8 , but so was the first one. It has a good plot, far better visual effects, and some good acting here and there. It is not a movie that addresses deep meanings, nor does it pretend on artistic excellence, though it does address existential problems, maybe the most serious ones, no matter how much they are ridiculed by people asleep or who want others to remain asleep.
The disdain because it does show physically inconsistent events is not justified, because it is a sci-fi and it has to have fiction in it, so the disdain is snobbish. Even, "interstellar" hailed as scientifically accurate , has some "atrocious" scientific inconsistencies, yet I didn't see anyone disgusted by them; not only that, even political propaganda, still no one complained. It was bland and uninspiring, still no one teared their clothes. It had some really good acting , but it takes more than that to make a good sci-fi movie.
So, Independence Resurgence ,is all about the return of the aliens , that are being informed by a distress call when their fleet is destroyed during the first contact. This time, though, they do not come with small energy weapons only , but with huge gravitational generators and with tools that can manipulate heavenly bodies. For the first time we come in close contact with their biological-social structure . We have always known they were a hive-like race, but now we are introduced to the crown of their hive , their queen, a cool spectacular monster.
They defeat the aliens by a way similar to that in the first movie, bait and kill, hide and infiltrate. People of the earth come also in contact, with a race unfriendly to the aliens, from which they are informed of a long background history of the alien attackers as well as the possibility to acquire new scientific knowledge and technological capabilities.
Overall a cool sci-fi , that will give you 2 pleasant cinema hours; if you like sci-fi of course.
Southpaw (2015)
Worth your money
Understand that those who negatively report for this movie, examine it as if you were going to painstakingly measure the dimensions of a pretty woman, strictly academically judging her skills and knowledge.
They use so to speak too much their left hemisphere for a work of art, when the right should have the first word.
Taking into account that we seldom see good movies from Hollywood, and all the cartoonish and blatantly superficial get the most advertisement, I think it's my obligation to report to true cinephiles(not clinically examining butchers), that we have a little oasis here. May be not the best of cases but still a pretty good one.(so a 10 stars, may be an exaggeration, but a much smaller one, than the 3 or 4 that I see posted by some uncanny viewers, so it's fair enough).
Go to the cinema and enjoy it! You won't be cheated.
Need for Speed (2014)
Much more than expected...
I went to the cinema yesterday, not expecting much from a movie titled after a video game(meaning that they usually distort the image, the concept and the depth of the game, doing bad ports from games to movies).
Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. To put it in a few words, I haven't seen a good movie coming out of Hollywood Studios for a long time, or at least can't readily recall when that happened. "Need for speed, the movie" is of those movies that you're going to want to watch for a second and a third time again and of the kind that generate sequels.I bet my life, we will see no 2 very soon.
No matter what some pretentious cinema experts tell you about shallowness and clichés and lack of some obscurely defined deep meaning(thin air usually), you're going to watch a complete product, with balanced action, good characters, warm humane acting, the necessary dose of superficial humor and of course the thrill of speed. You are only not going to like it if you don't enjoy the thrill of fast driving, or if you must pretend that you're smart.
Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots are revelations. They are a very good reason why this movie is not just another ctr+c, ctr+v movie we are used to watch lately. Especially Poots acting so good, as she is pretty and sexy.I am sure she is going to have a bright future and that she is reborn as a new star with this film.
You won't regret paying a ticket to watch it- except of course if you are a nanny with a hobby of knitting sweaters, but hey, nobody is perfect.
