Y: The Last Man (2021)
Much better than I expected
After reading the reviews, I was hesitant to watch this series that's based on my favorite comic. I'm glad I got past my initial hesitancy.
The acting is much better than reviewers say.
The storyline is much better than reviewers say.
The last man is a buffoon but likeable.
The wokeness is much less than the reviewers say.
I was completely and surprisingly satisfied with this adaptation of a great comic series. Sure, it isn't point by point as Walking Dead is to the source material, but the soul is there.

Foundation (2021)
Is this Foundation? Like the books?
I'm so confused. Wrong series I think. I thought this was based on Asimov's Foundation. If it is supposed to be...I think the writer can't read, has never read Foundation, or just decided to ruin something.
The cinematography is great.
I'm being generous.
Stranger Things (2016)
Goonies for adults
This is a fantastic horror/comedy. I was so pleasantly surprised as I began watching this. It is funny, scary, dramatic, and heartwarming... Usually all in one scene.
The story is really about relationships...The good and the bad ones. Every relationship in this series is complex to say the least. I've never seen something quite like it.
The acting is super. The music always fitting. The production quality grade A.
There is a gang of kids that reminded me of the Goonies...mischievous, fearless, hilarious, and totally adventurous.
I won't say much about the plot, because I watched it blind and am so glad I did.
Frontera (2014)
Great movie, but it dodges the modern issue of illegal aliens.
This movie was a joy to watch as a gift from TD. The acting is superb..especially Amy Madigan, the scenes are stunning, the pace is just what you'd want in a drama. Berry obviously took his time with this script and it shows in the character development and dialog. What he forgot to do was to somehow tie this into what is going on in our southern border now.
The only thing I can complain about is while tackling immigration he does so from an outdated view. Most of the illegal immigrants coming to America are children not family men looking for work.
He does seem like he has no opinion on the matter of immigration. He just doesn't take sides. I wish he had one way or another. A little controversy would have made it a 9.
Lucy (2014)
Lucy is a comic with thought...
I like the idea that we humans only use a percentage of our brains. I look around and see that amongst my friends and family...not many do. I just think, that there is more to a great brain than fighting bad guys...Ignore them, Love your children, and just be happy. That can never be taken from you unless you allow it. No need for a hero. Kaneman out....
So. Good movie Sad umph I'd rather spend my night with my friends
Like her current film - which may well be a kind of apotheosis, summing hp her career to this point - Scarlett Johanssson strikes this viewer as an extremely limited actress who has had the intelligence (or luck) to choose challengingly off-beat projects put together on highly commercially successful models. Hew visceral appeal may best be understood by extremely straight boys with hormones raging - the target demographic for many of the violent "action" films like LUCY turns out to be.
Manhattan (2014)
Oppenheimer is no stoner....
I just watched the first episode over on infinity on demand and loved it.
This series looks like it is going to be really good. The "Oppenheimer is a stoner" reviewer must be high himself to write that besides Oppenheimer "Everybody else is engaged in a horrible soap opera of sex, nudity, marital strife, alcoholism etc.." as if that is a bad thing in a drama. Duh! It is a drama after all. If you want historical fact read a book burn-out.
What the series premiere does is introduce us to a dynamic cast and quickly develops interesting characters and plot. It is shot well, acted well, and paced fantastically. Should be a hit for WGN...whatever network that is.
Autumn Blood (2013)
Ah Dumb Blood...
The cinematography is fantastic, which is precisely why I give this a 1. Who in their right mind would ruin such visual beauty behind a horrid, boring, banal, over-prompted, farce of a movie? I could have turned the volume off and enjoyed the movie more. The story was a distraction, which is amazing unto itself, who knew a yawn could be so distracting? The build up to the ending scenes is slow slow slow. Sadly, when you see the ending you'll know why. The ugly truth is that if "anything" happened previous to the ending the ending could not be climatic. If an actor argued with an imaginary fish half-way through this ...that would have been the climax.
The poster that said "it inflames the imagination and poetic sense" is a tree hugger or smoking some good weed. The only thing that was "inflamed" on me were my hemorrhoids from sitting for two hours watching trees. Trees.
If that is your thing...watching trees. I suggest going outside and looking around.
Slaughter Is the Best Medicine (2014)
The Best Medicine? kill me now....
Okay, so I get that the movie was made for absolutely nothing. Now I don't mean this is a low-budget B movie...I mean it was made with no budget. Zero. Don't believe me? Look it up. That is the only reason I give it a 3 and not a 1.
So, I borrow the flick from TD, Make myself a Manhattan, hit play, and start laughing. The acting from the "Team" is so shatteringly bad I felt silly watching it. I've seen better acting at the local community theater. Okay, sure this is the leads first "major" film and he didn't get paid. Now I know why. I wouldn't have paid the dude either. Unfortunately the same holds true for most of the actors in this, ahem, film.
There are a few scenes where the comedy saves this from being unbearable. But as a whole it is a yawn. A bad acted yawn.
To wash down this medicine I would have needed three Manhattans.
HazMat (2013)
HazMatter of fact..I need to be decontaminated after this..
What a toxic waste of matter this film was. I thank god I got to see it thanks to TD. I would have been livid if I sat through this after shelling out ten bucks or so. The acting is god awful, the effects putrid, and the story blah....I almost lost my girlfriend over this.
HazMatter of fact...after the first ten minutes in, a silly prank scene, my girlfriend looked over at me and smirked then shrugged. Right then I knew she was already disappointed in my nightly film selection.
HazMatter of fact...When the character that ends up being "hazmat" first decides to go bonkers and ax dudes, for no discernible reason, I heard my girl tsk and say "why would he be doing that?" I looked at her she smirked and shrugged again.
Hazmatter of fact...By the time a dudes head gets chopped off and the special effect is basically a basketball painted skin tone with a rubber face attached...which I think even had different color eyes than the actor...My girlfriend said that's it, got up, walked to the front door, turned smirked and shrugged again, and then walked out. I still haven't heard from her.
