Ein ganzes Leben (2023)
Good movie
Perhaps I am a bit biased because I lived in Austria for close to 20 years and hence can identify with the life of many of its citizens. Add to this my own upbringing in the countryside, on a farm and ypu will understand why I can also identify with much of what is hapoening in this movie. I think it is largely authentic, though set in a different age. The actors appear believable, the events seem real and not atypical for the lifestyle, the behaviour and aspiration of ordinary people in the European mountain regions. I also liked the way how modern technology entered a basically rural area and with it changed peoples lifes.
Abigail (2024)
Coarse language
I highly recommend this flic to anyone who wishes to learn about how American screenwriters ability to form sentences has deteriorated. The speech consists almost exclusively of the words starting with f or s e.g. What the f..., do not f... with me, what s...is that , what the f....is happening here or more simply just f...! Or s...!. One wonders why with such primitive language Hollywood still needs any screenwriters. They should have stayed on strike. AI can do it better and one does not feel ashamed in front of kids. Lets hope that an increasing number of countries bans movies with such profane language. The movie is otherwise watchable and pne could have made a so much better job without the gutter language.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Silly
The story is so far fetched that it is completely unbelievable snd an insult to science. No wonder with the "scientists" who are working on an imaginary problem. And I am not even talking about the inacceptable high number of miscast characters , especially those in England. Their specialty serms to be to communicate the f word in every second of their utterings. Shame of the screenwriters that seem to suffer from a lack of subtlety and intelligence. Afraid to say that this series has a lack of entertainment value and even for a scifi story is unrealistic and unconvincing. Do not waste the time on this.
All of Us Strangers (2023)
Drug induced?
Fair enough. The film matches the present tilt towards minority issues. Thats ok. And I can more than just understand that one gay man falls in love with another gay man. Whats the big deal ? Does that warrant 1 1/2 hours of almost unending boredom ?
Also : its seems screenwriter and the two leading actors seem to have been under a bit too much ketamine or cocaine. There seems to be little other explanation for Adam's trip back to his unremarkable childhood. And: the two men seem to have few common interests except sex. What do we learn from that? Nothing ! Its a pity, so much more could have been made out of the basic story.
Liam dan Laila (2018)
Desirable ?
Here we have a flic that tells us a love story from a Muslim -Indonesian perspective. Love between two persons takes a backseat as it seems much more important that the foreign groom subjects himself to the cultural and religious preferences of the family of the bride. Imagine roles were reversed. The r....word and "cultural superiority" would undoubtedly be flung into the discussion. This is not a movie that motivates intercultural marriage where one party insists on the other giving up his or her cultural and religious identity. That is not saying that a compromise should not be sought. Alas that is not the lesson that this movie tries to impart. P. S. I am myself interculturally and racially diverse married, hence I think I have a personal experience of the subject.
The Pacific (2010)
There is a lesson here
A. America always wins. The encounters with the Japanese are predictable. The Japanese die, the Marines survive. There is a good deal anti-Japanese racism here too.
B. Young men, who barely know where they are sent are used as cannonfodder on some godforsaken islands. Their characters are shallow, with little reflection on their plight
c. Discipline often seems lax, one sometimes has the impression as of nobody is in charge to lead.
D. it runs like a red thread through the series that anything and everything about US Forces is superior and that it is a given that the USA deserves to win. Maybe this kind of arrogance is the ultimate reason why the USA has not decisively won any military contest since WW2. I discount the Korean War because ultimately nobody won: North Korea is still here.
Lastly, this is a series made by Americans for Americans so they can dwell on past glory and have themselves exposed to some pretty primitive profane exchanges using the usual 200 word vocabulary which to copy in their daily verbal communications.
Dark (2017)
One of the worst
You take Back to the Future, Stranger Things and H. G. Wells Timetravel and mix it, then add a group of unatteactive, outright dirty i. E. unwashed Germans from the province, set them in dystopian environment where they start to philosophise and pontificate about the beginning, the end and the present andvin typically green fashion mix in a nuclear power plant as the probable root of all evil and... bingo. There is yoyr new series which is full of wrong science, bare of any logic and full with people that love to scream at each other. If I was a non-German that is the kind of destination would avoid like the plague. I really do not know what the director wants to tell us. Nothing I guess.
