After Earth (2013)
A massive 'YES!' for bona fide sci-fi fans
A real gem of a film and a very welcome surprise after some harsh and undeserved poor reviews...
This film was a complete pleasure to watch from start to finish and it gets top marks from someone who has followed the genre avidly for over 30 years. I am not a massive Will Smith fan and kept waiting for this film turn bad as was foretold and it just never did.
This was a film was made for those who read science fiction and crave for something a bit more cerebral rather than another Transformers movie. I myself was reared on the vivid novels of hostile planets by excellent authors such Harry Harrison, Robert Heinlein and others.
The acting was very good and completely convincing throughout, it well plotted with very fine story telling by Mr Shyamalan and a star turn by the two leads.
The architecture of the future, the graphics & visuals were a treat throughout. The only major error I noted, was the erroneous time-line for the newly evolved/devolved ecology, in that we are expected to believe that after just 100 years new improved bigger stronger lifeforms have emerged on earth; Roc sized birds, flying snakes and lions that hunt in Amazonian treetops. If this had been on the right order of time, then this would have been better I think. On a minor point that awful character name Cypher Raige, why oh why?
So friends, dare to think for yourselves and don't always trust the popular opinion of the IMDb rating, as the so called majority can often can get it very wrong indeed! As, its sometimes down to a mere few people starting a rumour and then other people just jump on to a bandwagon of opinion without thinking freely themselves.
For me, this film deserves to go into the hall of fame of these amazing sci-fi films that have made over the years, such as; Alien films,Prometheus, Terminator 1-2, Avatar, rise of the planet of the apes, Blade Runner, The Fly, Time Machine the original, West world,The matrix, 5th Element, Brazil, Outlander, Silent Running, Predator.
In sum 'After Earth' comes highly recommended by this bona fide sci-fi fan!!!

Highy recommended
A simple but very realistic film, beautifully lit and well crafted..great performances and invaluable insight into Chinese culture and of immigrant experiences in London.
It uses archetypal Chinese story themes...love doomed because of duties and responsibilities...honour, and strong bonds of loyalty between friends which are immutable...when these are broke the consequences are often tragic.
I loved...and learnt a lot about this community...a great template for a film really , it would be good to see similar film about other minorities, to help illustrate we are all the same.
