The Collector (2009)
Needless gore and violence. Psychopath friendly
This movie is a psychopath's fantasy. I looked away multiple times due the senseless cruelty. It could have been a good movie had it not went down the direction of blood and gore, which I seem to remember was common theme in horror thrillers around the time this movie was released, with the likes of Saw and Hostel having been popular for a number of years.
If you enjoy watching people mutilated and are a sadistic person in nature, then you'll likely derive pleasure from this movie. You'll be glued to the screen, completely emotionless and stone faced.
The only reason I gave this movie more 2 than stars is simply because the acting was good as a whole, and there were some interesting ideas that were implemented well. This is more a what could have been type of movie. Remove the gore and be more creative and have a plotline designed for emotionally healthy people. Rather than living out the fantasies of a mentally ill and all around sick person better known as a psychopath.
Eden Lodge (2015)
A shambolic and hideous wreck
This movie has used the popular board game Cluedo as its foundation, mish-mashing scenes from several movies to create a spectacular mess. They have ripped off the Eden Lake title and its movie cover. You have to dig deeper to realise its completely unrelated to Eden Lake. They have shamelessly taken ideas from the movie Psycho, Hostel, The Shining, and possibly Cabin Fever. I assume not a single thing about the movie was original.
About halfway through this horror show I correctly assumed the pension aged woman was the antagonist. 10 or so minutes later I questioned myself when a 20 something year old woman was drowned by a single hand pushing her head underwater, with little effort. It would take a stronger than average male to drown a young woman with just one hand at the expense of a great deal of effort, let alone a woman twice her age. Also, I cannot get my head around why a woman who loses a son to suicide would plot to kill and torture anyone (including a newborn), people who have paid her money to stay at her lodge... There is being completely nuts, and then there is a movie director lacking originality and logic... Finding the mental and physical energy to do it all that her age, while remaining as silent as a specialist soldier in the woods with rustling leaves and dead wood is beyond comprehension. And all this because a random god told her "to cleanse the Earth" yeah right...
Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
Poor movie under the surface
For the most part it's a poorly written movie. It is enjoyable if you can ignore the flaws which there are plenty to pick from.
Relatively early on in the movie there is a major plot hole - in the basement and relating to the girl. Other scenes are senseless or just practically impossible. I can take some unrealistic moments, but the movie is not exactly a Batman movie. One of the major characters reacts in a way no average adult would react, let alone a child.
Also, as someone who doesn't watch movies all that often (particularly new ones), certain things can stand out to me. I couldn't help but roll my eyes - one dialogue which was there just appeal to the woke crowd.
Worse than the first movie which I have watched twice. Don't plan on watching this one again.
Locke (2013)
Absolutely awful
I almost fell asleep and remain sleepy. The last movie that caused to me fall asleep was ironically Mad Max. I was looking for a movie similar to Phonebooth (one of my all-time fav movies) and this was recommended. Well. Simply put. It was a snooze fest. The fake Welsh accent is bordering comical, except the movie contained no suspense, nothing worth mentioning. Movie = driving in a car on a motorway/highway. Talking in that dodgy Welsh accent on the phone. A lot of cliques. That's about all I can remember. If you want to see a movie with a guy experiencing a mid-life crisis, I would suggest Falling Down which is far more entertaining.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
Easily the worst of the first three
The second was the best in my opinion, this one was below average. The jump scares are easy to predict. The most is not even scary, it borders on funny because it's actually trying to be scary. It lost a star for showing a pyramid with an 'all seeing eye' about 30 minutes into the movie (Lin Shaye's 'Book of Seeing'). Tired of seeing references to that weird crap.
Room for Rent (2019)
Dull plot and unrealistic characters
It is not often that I can predict all of the major events in a movie. This was just so predictable that I saw what would happen as soon as a character was introduced, it was easier to solve than the two times table. The creepiness is right in front of their faces, yet they are somehow oblivious to it, they have no sixth sense.
I was overjoyed when I realised there was less than 10 minutes left of this drivel. To make matters worse the ending was arguably worse than the film itself, but I was just relieved it was all over. The type of movie you hope to never watch again. The type of movie that causing you to fall asleep at the cinema when you have had enough popcorn and your drink is flat
