Incredibly captivating
11 February 2024
Despite being slow at parts, the characters, the acting, the story is so incredibly captivating. They've shone a light on a difficult topic that needs to be brought into the public conscious and you can really tell that the cast were passionate about doing this story right.

I'm looking forward to seeing more from Ella (Justine) and Maria (Luisa) in the future. They captured their character's vulnerability, fear, hope and a whole rollercoaster of emotions so well, even during some particularly difficult scenes - I hope there was mental health support available on and off set! Aiden Turner was also fantastic as always - menacing in his role as Glenn.

The ending muddles what could have be a great film
12 September 2021
The film had me intrigued up towards the last 30 mins. Creators no longer believe audiences can think for themselves of understand slow burn dramas, so they threw in a twist and on the nose explanation of the film through 2 characters. It was cheap and ruined what was otherwise and interesting watch. We've all been guilty of spying on neighbours, and seeing this couple go down a rabbit hole really drew me in as I could understand the way in which they justified their actions. Sadly, I don't think the creators believed in that version of the story. The twist comes in rushed, focused, and full of exposition dumping.

Great potential, just could not commit to the initial story.

Popping off with that racism

Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the whole movie, which has a terrible act structure and editing, you're made to look at the 1 capable person as if he's weird/disgusting. Everything he does, though logical, gets a disgusted response from Mila's character. She speaks for him, instead of trying to communicate properly through hand gestures and symbols. Like, there's sand everywhere, they could draw symbols to explain things to one another, but no. We just get an English speaker constantly saying "I don't know what you're saying" and "never mind" when he doesn't understand her.

If Mila is suppose to be the audience's surrogate, surely she'd try communicating in other ways to find out more about the world she's been dropped into. We don't even get a hint of lore or the wider planet because of the pointless language barrier.

Other characters of colour that speak the language of the world are also only given lines when they are made to seem rude. No other lines to build character or conversation. Everything is about Mila and no one exists outside of her.

Ron Perlman speaks English, which is labelled as the Language of "our world" (Earth), but he apparently didn't bother to teach his crew English to help them when communicating with people from our world as they get dragged into theirs.

The writing and issues around language are just a mess...such lazy and boring writing that repeats the same issues and shots over and over.

All style, no substance

Intentionally confusing on the surface, but simple to understand once you take a breather from the needlessly inflated dialogue. The entire movie reminded me of academics who aim for superiority by using an excessive amount of jargon and a 'unique' structure, but in reality are just bad at presenting ideas to a learning audience. The movie isn't as smart as it thinks it is, and while it's certainly pretty, it's boring. Action and an interesting hook can only carry a narrative so far, and we're given no reason to care for the main cast beside their familiar faces and some weak 'family' connections that are never developed.

Additionally, the 'epic' score is used excessively throughout, sometimes making it difficult to hear the actual dialogue. It's a real shame as I was looking forward to this movie.

Side note: the only character name I can remember two hours after seeing the movie is 'Neil'. That's not a good sign.

Gripping but disappointing results
28 December 2018
I was gripped to this series from episode one. Sadly, the end results fall flat, though there is an intriguing twist that sets up the main thread of the next season and i'm interested in seeing how they develop it further. The series can be seen as complete if you miss the last minute or two, which is nice - allowing for a sense of closure in case you forget to tune into season two.
