Excellent Documentary on a Truly Impressive Auto Designer
7 February 2022
To the young auto fan or potential designer (in any field, actually) it's a fine and very well made documentary about a creative designer.

The fact that Jay Leno, an "Expert Collector" in the world of cars, is involved is simply another plumb in this documentary's cap.

The many cars, the stories of the great European manufacturers, and the near-obsessive need of legendary designer Frank Stephenson makes this a joy to watch.

The quality of the documentary itself is also a good example what I feel a doc. Is made to be - learning/enjoyment...the way a fine automobile is made to be transportation/excitement.

THE NEW YORK TIMES - EXCERT of Review by Bosley Crowther Dec. 4, 1947
15 January 2022
.. The fabulous legs of Marlene Dietrich and that lady's distinguished charms, which have not been seen in movies since "Kismet" of three years back, are still rather miserably hidden beneath some bear-grease and a lot of gypsy rags in Paramount's "Golden Earrings," which came to the Paramount Theatre yesterday. For some strange suicidal instinct has apparently inspired that studio to do everything to Miss Dietrich that would submerge her special assets in this film and make a greasy ragamuffin of her, which we doubt that the public cares to see. Furthermore, some curious confusion as to what is humorous and what is not is plainly evident in this story of a British spy in Germany before the war and of his nimble attempts to elude the Nazis with the aid of a moody gypsy girl. Cheek by jowl with pointed nonsense about a British officer donning gypsy clothes, having his ears pierced for earrings and repulsing the advances of this unwashed girl are scenes of lowering melodrama in which another earnest British spy is killed, a German scientist sacrifices himself for humanity and any number of Nazi "heavies" are bumped off. Neither consistency nor cleverness are in the story or the writing thereof. And, plainly, Miss Dietrich is the victim of careless sabotage, being cast and directed to play a creature which is about as far from her forte as a grandma role. It is neither appealing nor artistic to behold La Dietrich, the model of svelte, smeared with some dark and oily ointment and prancing about in dirty duds...

Super Furball (2018)

Creatively excellent family fantasy movie from Finland
9 May 2021
I'm a 74-year old who bought Super Furball as a DVD at the Dollar Tree. I'm a fan of film, and especially animation, so went for it.

Super Furball is actually quite a story, as it involves the good little girl in school, with typical problems at home (divorced family, slob boyfriend, bullys and cliques at school) who seeks a pet. Gets a guinea pig.

Guinea pig leads to superpowers. If you see the film you'll see how. It works as a fantasy.

What gets pretty (more European complex) is that there's a mystery of the herring in the cove (important stuff in Finland, and yes, everywhere) are going wild, due to pollution. That's not a big spoiler, but it's important to the movie. In fact, the ecology message is rather complex and profound in a movie like this.

I'd say it reminded me in scope and style, of "The Christmas Chronicles Two". Which is a complement.

Finally, since it's dubbed English over Finnish, the mouths don't move exactly. Also, there is charming animations our hero makes in her notebooks along the way, and the words are in FInnish. And there's some FInnish pop associations. So it's an animation as adventure in another country's style, like going to a Vietnamese restaurant. Or a Chinese Restaurant on Christmas like Ralphie and his family do in the original great "The Christmas Story".

A broad comedy (yes, it has to be, it's not a tragedy) on the aging Superhero's retirement
24 August 2019
OK, everybody, if you're young and serious about Superhero movies, then this is like Monty Python... it simply cannot be taken seriously. If you're a hipster older person, with a somewhat crude or random sense of humor, then this is a fun flick and well worth the rent.

Failing "SUPERPOWERS" is what we all face after a certain age, which might be now... say, 70. Hell, I worked to the age of 67. Lucky for me, I still had a job. Now, imagine if you ARE/WERE a SUPERHERO.

The director Steve Barron directed the films Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Coneheads and The Adventures of Pinocchio, This movie is along those lines, which broadly might be "fish out of water" genre films. Kinda.

The script is funny, perserse and crude, and hey, again, it's not going to be as actually involving as say, Cocoon (1985)... isn't meant to be. I also felt the special effects were actually quite well done (funny for the scenes and "believable" for the characters).

This might not be as big a big budget film (on what?), but shows skills and real fun in giving us "of a certain age, with a kid's sense of humor" a ckeeky carnival of life ride, in a nursing home with Irish exteriors.

Sorry if I just re-wrote ops-52535, but I want to add the "stars" in the film did a good job with the broad material, and I must be a rake, but I thought both Fiona Glascott and Fionnula Flanagan were hotties.

Fine work of cinematic history
3 February 2019
I've seen a review entitled "Continuously shaky camera work and up close camera positioning hinder this film".

I know that being in the space capsule blasting off for the moon must be shaky. I know that's the way I'd feel if it was the first time in human history it was ever done. And none of the other camera work, the human story of getting to that blasting off point, is shaky. So I'm not in agreement with this view. I found the movie a fine work of uplifting popular cinema. I believe we all can agree it was not intended or produced as an art film, as was "At Eternity's Gate" ... (which to my sense, was very shaky and I could say "Continuously shaky camera work and up close camera positioning hinder this film"). I will suggest that all my friends and people in general see the movie to enjoy the story of singular people (each was there in that time, and dedicated to doing the task at hand) who helped make a very large task happen. We are at a point in the history of humanity where huge undertakings, such as going to the moon for the first time, are possible. This is a very good representation of that effort, and the human dedication, and family bonds, that were involved. So storys are told of those who have gone before us. So movies can inspire us to dedicate ourselves to the task at hand. So movies can show us that we need to keep loving those who give up our time and help when we go into the military, and do what we are ordered to do.

The music, the photography, the sets, the acting, cutting and direction are all well done and make a heroic story both heroic, and personally poignant. This, to me and my wife, is what we so appreciated about seeing it. And living it in this work.

A good double feature with It's a Wonderful Life
27 April 2016
Everyone knows It's a Wonderful LIfe (1946) , but fewer know Made for Each Other (1939). If you are a film fan, you know Carole Lombard was Clark Gable's wife, and died in an airplane crash in Jan 16, 1942, while helping the war effort. Enjoy this as the first film with It's a Wonderful Life. This film may be an unexpected mix of plot devices, but anyone who enjoys classic Hollywood drama and stars will enjoy the fine cast and human story that makes this a fine Hollywood movie. Beginning with the classic Shop Around the Corner (1940), this film might be considered a early classic for Jimmy Stewart, and a lovely tribute for Lombard. She will be remembered as a fine and beautiful screen star whose career and life were tragically cut short. Made for Each Other movingly tell a story of love and devotion to both family and job frustrations that even the most modern viewer can relate to. Also, this was made in 1939 as were so many great films. It's a movie that were made to tug at your heart strings rather than overwhelm you with explosions and loud music.

What's to complain about?
26 November 2014
I am amazed that some many critics, er, that is viewers, are left wanting by this inane addition to the Beatles/Rutles canon fodder. Have you (not you reading this, the insipid critics of this mocumentary,,, said critics, have you made a sequel recently? Or anything in film?)

I'm saying, the opening scene is worth the price of Prime or whatever you got it on. IF you are watching on an original VHS-tape, more power to you.

What did you expect, Gone with Citizen Caine? The Poseidon Mutiny? For 50 cent More?

Jeez, I think if you thought this was going to be better than the first one, then you must be one of those people who think Sloppy Seconds were a great band.

Just sayin'. Idle time is the devils playpen. Relax. Take a deep one.

A fine sci-fi movie that is not based on the original
5 February 2014
Hey, it says Based on characters created by Peter Chung. That's what it is.

Karyn Kusama deserves much more credit for this film than she's ever gotten. She should be doing more movies, and yet, she's on the sidelines, in term of hot directors. Why? A Hollywood extravaganza of a sci-fi romantic epic that meets any expectations for the uncritical. My wife loved it, and thought it was opulent, very psychedelic and totally gripping right up to the end. I have, and know the original, but if you believe that reading a book is different than seeing a film of that book, or if you believe one version of a vision, called the original, doesn't have to be re-cloned into another same reality (like the plot of this film, Aeonflux fans, don't you get it, the original is never remade... without losing something. Hey, this is the worst film to bitch about not making it the same. The whole plot is about that very question... the clone is not enough... OK, whatever. We are still all originals. Films are not. Especially remakes. But simply, if you are a lover of Charlize Theron, her lips, her mouth, her eyes and her body, then sit back and enjoy. The scenery in this film is awesome. The special effects are awesome, if you like Euro and Brazilian modern... hey, Pete Postlethwaite is there, in a ghostly homage to himself as actor and embodied spirit of the authentic keeper of human offspring. Just dig it. The music is great, and very inventive at times. Great work, Graeme Revell. This is a fine movie to enjoy, extremely well made and directed, and serve it up, if you like double features, with either (OK, my choices) The Tenth Victim, or a decade or two more currently, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Or much more currently, the Hunger Games.
