Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
A terrible excuse for a movie with absolutely no humour
I watched this movie because all of my friends said it was hilarious, and since this movie is aimed at my age group (I'm pretty sure it is anyway) I took their word for it. My friend and I rented it out one afternoon and settled down on the couch ready to laugh.
Not once did I laugh. Not once did my friend laugh. Not once did I think that any part of this movie was remotely funny. This is a lame, pathetic attempt at a teen comedy.
The character of Napoleon Dynamite made me want to cry. To try and imitate someone who clearly has some kind of mental disability and then make their acts funny is sick and disturbing. There is a kid in my year with a mental disability who acts very similar to Napoleon; he sits alone, has no friends and is laughed at constantly because he is different. It saddens me that someone would take this kind of situation and try and make a supposedly 'humourous' movie out of it.
The humour in this movie relied on the actors inability to act, which in my opinion can never be a good thing. Ther drab, dull performances was supposed to be funny but just came across as they obviously would, drab and dull.
For your own sakes, I strongly recommend that you stay away from this movie at all costs if you wish to be entertained. This movie was so bad that my friend actually fell asleep, and it was 3:00 in the afternoon.
I am only giving this pathetic excuse for a movie 1 star because you can't go any lower.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
Terrible - If you're a fan of the original STAY AWAY
I'd just like to start of by saying this film was absolutely terrible. The original plot was manipulated into some grotesque monster of a story, with some of the funniest parts dropped and replaced with an unnecessary love triangle. The only reason this is getting 1 out of 10 is because you can't give zeros.
I found the acting atrocious at times, the only good contributions by Martin Freeman and possibly Alan Rickman. Although chronically depressed Alan Rickman would seem perfect for the part of chronically depressed Marvin, it just doesn't seem to fit and is lacking somewhat. However compared to the rest of the cast he seems to shine. Martin Freeman is fairly stereotypical and plays the part well, although he loses all credit in the sappy love scenes.
As for the other actors, I found Mos Def drab, boring and unconvincing as Ford Prefect. His delivery is poor and unsatisfying and I'm sure a better actor could have been found. Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox kind of irritated me and as a drunken lunatic he bored me more then amused me. And what was with the second head underneath his own neck? I much preferred the limited animation of the television series head to this strange insane one. Zooey Deschanel gives a luck-lustre performance as Trillian and honestly, I just wanted her to go. Kill her off, have her eaten by (pig-shaped) Vogans, anything would've done. but of course she has to be kept around as the 'love interest'. Bill Nighy is so-so but not to my taste. Out of the worst actors he is probably the best.
To conclude I'll just add something to my original summary: If you are a fan of the original stay away and if you have never seen/heard the original, spare yourself the boredom and stay away also.
Naked in New York (1993)
Ralph Macchio: The Only Good Thing
Overall I didn't think this movie was very good at all; the plot dragged on, the lead was SO irritating and it had nudity in that just ruined it entirely. At times, you just didn't know what was going on at all.
The best bit in the whole thing was Ralph Macchio. In one of his best performances ever, he has completely changed from the adorable Karate Kid (with the exception that he still looks about 15). His speech at the end of the movie was just great, like the short movie clip that they show about the nominees at the Oscars. The kiss was a bit cheesy but hey, the rest of the plot had already gone to bananas.
I give this movie 4 out of 10, and all of those points are for Ralph and Ralph alone.
Boy Next Door (1999)
Not the best but worth watching
Okay, so this wasn't the best short film. I just wanted to see it because it starred Tom Lenk (one of the best actors around).
I don't know if it's a good thing or not that he can play a gay character so well, but he did a good job (another example of this is his character on 'BtVS'). I found his portrayal amusing if anything. I found the sister character really annoying and I was rooting for Tom the whole way.
The plot was rather basic and we've seen similar things a million times before, but hey, it's something to watch when you're bored. All in all, I'd give it 6 out of 10 just for Tom Lenk's performance.
