Promising start but doesn't go deep
2 February 2021
As they go year by year there are some entertaining interviews and a bunch of duds as well. It's more of a spotlight on people's favourite horror film rather than a documentary that digs deep into the history or cultural impact of 80's horror. There's some fun footage but very little behind the scenes stuff. It's like a polished YouTube video that is over three hours. Finally my biggest issue is how they don't mention Aliens once. They even have a section talking about the "final girl" in horror but they don't talk out Sigourney Weaver... I don't know if they had the rights to show clips from that film so they just forgot it. It may seem trivial to one people but Aliens was far more significant than the majority of the film's on this documentary. Kinda weird

The Snowman (2017)
3/10
Sequel setup? I'd call it the Scarecrow!
6 January 2020
Why is there snowmen? That doesn't matter. Who are these characters? Why does Val Kilmer sound like a strange foreign man? They dubbed his lines from English to English, so what happened there?

Let's start with the good stuff. The cinematography is pretty great. The sets and scenes are impressive and they have a great cast. But since the acting is mediocre it doesn't really matter. I don't care about any of these characters, they are all flat and boring.

The bad stuff is really bad. I guessed the ending within the first half of the film. There is almost no tension in the movie. They film strange flashbacks with Val Kilmer that have almost nothing to do with the main plot. The action is boring and almost non-existent. Finally the majority of the music sucked. They have this one silly song that repeats continuously throughout the film and it detracts all tension. Finally my favorite part is the scenes revolving around the 2020 World Cup and J.K. Simon's. These scenes are confusing, I couldn't tell you what was going on and who his character was in relation to the story. The Snowman is a hard pass. Watch it on Netflix but if you don't, you didn't miss a thing.

Ready or Not (I) (2019)

Not as original as I had hoped
24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ready or Not is a watchable suspense horror film. It seems a little too familiar To You're Next. It just wasn't as good, the suspense, the gore, the kills and ending just didn't live up to my expectations. I predicted the "twist" early on, I knew a real paranormal curse would get them at the end. I thought the lead actress did a great job carrying the film and being mostly believable. She certainly drops the ball multiple times by leaving two guns on the ground. She's seems to be more lucky than skilled at surviving. Thankfully the comedy in the film was dark, dry and not too much. It lightened the mood at times and helped the pace. I think atmosphere, suspense and sets all could have been improved. There's certainly room for changes that would have kept me on the edge of my seat. Maybe a twist I didn't see coming. Instead they delivered a solid forgettable flick. Please watch You're Next than Ready or Not and check out the similarities. Then take a second and think about how bad they wanted to name this film Hide and Seek but couldn't because of that Robert Deniro movie.

Watchable
16 December 2019
At this point I'm insanely burnt out by films about 911 or the war in the middle East. I'd prefer a film about Isis than another movie about the Taliban. I'd say this isn't as good as Lone Survivor. The action is pretty boring. The main feature is American soldiers riding horses and shooting guns. It's too bad they chose to make a generic scripted war buddy flick. The team is a bunch of pretty actors having a great time in Afghanistan.

Childish and Poorly Paced
13 December 2019
No jokes work. Most characters shout throughout the entire film. The love story is unbelievable and Seth Rogan would have been fired within a few days. He's a giant shouting man child. I could never believe the circumstances or danger they found themselves in. Try making your movie less "hip" and more grounded in reality. Comedies don't have to be dumb, loud and silly.

Ad Astra (2019)
6/10
Watchable but a deceiving trailer
6 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There's no way this is a 1-4 star film. Ad Astra is far too dramatic and depressing than the trailers let on. Most people probably were expecting a sci-fi thriller with some drama. Instead Ad Astra is slow and heavy for every scene except the action sequences. These scenes definitely hold your attention and the "science" isn't perfect but visually it's pleasing and somewhat believable. The moon rover chase scene was awesome, space baboons were crazy too. What really kills Ad Astra is the score, the lack of compelling dialogue and a really poorly written monologue. This is no Interstellar or The Martian. I wish the trailer didn't make this movie look like an action packed space adventure. It clearly isn't, it's a story about a man and his strained relationship with his father. I don't dislike it or find it compelling. It's fine.

Historical or Fiction
24 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a fan of history, I love the authenticity that went into this film. The cars, the clothes, music, commercials, sets and language are all on point. I almost thought Rick Dalton was a real person. The slow build and character development was classic QT. Now the last third of the film really lost me. The movie piqued when Cliff Booth went to the ranch. That scene alone reminded me of the tension in Hateful Eight. But then we get into Kurt Russell quickly narrating the next six months and up to the very h plour the infamous Manson murders took place.

Everything after that is pure fiction. That's where the film lost me. Either make the entire film fictional or historic, don't combine the two. It doesn't work, revising history is pointless. I wish QT went the other direction and ended the story the way it really ends. It's almost as if while filming Titanic, James Cameron decided the boat shouldn't sink at the end and everyone gets off ok. The violence was pointless, the dog attack scene was just vicious and Cliff Booth came off as a real woman killer by the end of the film. I give this movie 6/10 because I liked it up till about 60%. What a strange film.

Lots of hate, pretty petty opinions
21 July 2019
Us was awesome. The scale of this film was much larger than I expected and it was creepy as intended. I found the acting to be on-point and Lupita Nyong'o performance was captivating and impressive. It may not be a logical film and it doesn't answer all the large questions created by it's finale but lots of horror films get away with these issues. It's a trip and it was fun to take. Not your typical horror film.

E.T. (1982)

Let's be real
6 May 2019
If you were a kid in the eighties than I'm sure you love E.T. It's a visually impressive film and we'll directed but it truly speaks to one generation. As a 90's / 2000's kid, E.T. freaked me out. He resembled a burn victim and I did not enjoy the film. This is a kid's movie and kids nowadays and in the future won't relate to E.T. I've showed this film to some kids and they don't like him either. If the film doesn't speak to its target audience then it's not relevant anymore. It's still good but only works as nostalgia for an older generation. I'm sure my opinion won't be liked but it's valid.

The only war movie needed
4 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In 2019 this film is more relevant and needed than in 1993. Steven Spielberg puts on an amazing display of history that is often ignored or forgotten. When this film came out only 40% of Americans knew the history of the Holocaust. Spielberg chose a perfect period in time to create an everlasting story. The Pianist is impressive as well but Schindler's List manages to tell alot of overlapping stories. This gives us all a clearer view of what happened. Each character has a small story and you are invested in. Spielberg also manages to insert comedy to horrible situation. There are some weird scenes like when the gun won't fire multiple times, sparing a man's life. The cinematography and use of color is impressive. Since the film is in greyscale it feels historical, the violence is more digestible. When Spielberg brings in his one spot of color (the girl in red jacket), you can't help but realize the way it was filmed was all a choice. The color jumps at you and your eyes can't help but follow. The violence and gore is hard to watch at times, this film has endless senseless deaths and humiliations as well. The actors are amazing, Liam Neeson blew up after his performance as Oskar Schindler. His final speach shows true emotion and care. The ending of the film cements the reality of the story. All the actors join their real-life figures and place a stone at Oskar Schindler's grave. Schindler's List belongs on the AFI top 100. It may be Spielberg's best film.

Let's get real
21 November 2018
There is something missing with new anime, especially new Gundam. This series lacks the realism and gritty tone that should accompany a series about war and death. In comparison to Gundam 0080 this series seems as if it's mostly for teenagers. The amount of double crossing, switching side and silly dialogue really hurts the plot. The action can be good but once again OP Gundam's and Neo Zeon suits are ridiculous. They take away any intensity from the battles because you know the average mech suit cannot hit or hurt our main characters. I do like the design of the Unicorn but it's far from the best designed mech in the series. The Kshatriya is amazing, the design is intimidating and its weapon system is entertaining and unique. There are some great action sequences and also some that depend too much on computer animation and lack depth.

Now the series truly falls apart within the plotline. I liked the first few episodes but once we get deep into Laplace's box and characters switching sides constantly you lost me. Banagher can be pretty annoying sometimes, always freaking out at the worst moments while being so over dramatic. If you didn't want to kill people, don't get in the suit. Some of the dialogue in this is straight up emo and cringe worthy. I must admit I had issues following the plotline, I didn't care much about the box or it's contents, especially when the ultimate weapon/ discovery seems to be the Unicorn. It's literally impossible to explain the plot of the entire series in one paragraph and that's a problem. The best movies and series don't over complicate the plot.

If you are over 19 and have watched some of the classics like Zeta or War in the Pocket than you will understand where I come from. But if you have only recently started on Gundam or you are young then you will hate my review and love the series.

I encourage you to go back and track down some of the classic Gundam series and compare it to this. The animation is on a different level back then and the intensity of war is much higher.

Interstellar (2014)

Is there a better Sci-fi flick?
4 November 2018
Interstellar may be my favorite film. Certainly my favorite Sci-fi movie. It pushes the boundaries of what can be accomplished on film. Christopher Nolan figured out how to tell a compelling story about characters we really care about. There is no wastee scene in this film, no pointless dialogue. The acting is amazing and Matthew McConaughey leads this film with a force. The soundtrack matches the intensity of the story. This is a must watch, full attention, no phone to distract you. It's rewarding though, the type of film that makes you think. I watch this once a year and I never get sick of it. These are the kind of blockbusters we need.

A real treat and amazing script
2 November 2018
It's weird to see haters reviewing this with 1 star. I guess they wanted Transformers or something very American to hold their attention.

First off, the characters are awesome and well written. The dialogue is punchy and fun. The story doesn't need to be overly complex but if you pay attention there are a ton of details to pick up on. Especially on a second viewing. There is violence but it's far from disgusting. It brings some exciting scenes to a one set film.

I think this is one of Tarantino's best, similar to Reservoir Dogs. It's a longer film, so as long as you dedicate the 3 hours and aren't expecting a traditional film then give it a watch. Especially on a cold winter's day.

Bad decisions kill a good movie
28 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The first and last 30 mins of Alien: Covenant are awesome. There's great action, cool set pieces and decent characters.

Once the team lands this film really falls apart. Some decisions are forgivable but others make no sense. The captain of the team is dumb and puts everything at risk just to ask questions.

Prometheus was a mistake, a bad movie as well. It irks me that this sequel depends so much on the plotline of his first prequel. The stories are complex to their own detriment. Some of this film is so good, it sucks that we ended up with such a mixed bag.

Halloween (I) (2018)

Halloween does a lot right and a bit too much wrong
27 October 2018
Halloween (2018) had me excited and really into the film for the first 30 mins. After that it kind of falls apart by too many primary characters steering the plot in different directions and tones.

Despite great acting, I really did not like the dialogue the Danny McBride attempted to improve. The small chats about dance class, clipping toe nails didn't work at all.

The kills are legit, there's at least 12, probably closer to 20. A lot of it is off screen but they pan back to show the gore or aftermath. Some of this is effective, other deaths don't make sense.

Finally the element that brought this film down a notch is the "twist". I won't say what it is but thankfully the movie doesn't completely ruin itself.

Last 20 mins are good. Great suspense, tough ladies dishing out revenge! I would watch it again but I expected a bit more. Wish I didn't see the trailers, once again those are the best scenes.

We Are Still Here (I) (2015)
6/10
Great scares, that's about it.
18 October 2018
I really wanted to get into this film for Halloween. I thought it would be a new classic horror film I missed but I was mostly wrong. There are some great effects, scares and atmosphere in We Are Still Here. Also these ghosts don't mess around, they kill and do it in brutal ways. I felt like I was watching a ghost slasher film at times.

That's the positive stuff. Here's the negative:

1. I disliked the cast, especially the main couple. 2. Some of the acting just isn't good. 3. The ending is all over the place. 4. The house wasn't scary or very unique.

I recommend this as a rental. I wouldn't watch it again though.

It keeps getting better
14 October 2018
Fresh off the Boat manages to capture the 90's perfectly. The hip hop references are amazing. Each family member is awesome, especially the mom (Constance Wu). Some jokes don't land but each season gets better and there's no annoying laugh track. It's awesome to see a Chinese American family as the lead in this series. Check it out!

Such a mix of good and bad
12 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Puppet Master (2018) has a great start to it. I loved the actors and characters. It felt promising but as soon as the guests check into the hotel the film starts to fall apart. The puppet movements aren't up to par. The gore takes over and they totally ditch the plot. The cops are useless, all the puppets are evil and they don't have them all here like Six shooter. It just feels like the film looses all it's momentum. The "ending" is straight weird and sets up a sequel I guess. Rather than a sequel to this film they should just reboot it.

Basket Case (1982)

Entertainingly weird
11 October 2018
Basket Case is older than me. It's weird and fun but unique even in 2018. Basket Case isn't scary anymore, it's a bit disturbing but mostly funny. The acting is stiff but all the actors are doing their best. There are some ackward sex scenes so don't watch this one with your parents. Belial is a cool creepy little skin sack monster that is somehow super strong. This movie only cost $35,000 to make and is actually filmed in NY. It has a gritty feel to it that is unique to it's time. Check it out.

The Predator (2018)
5/10
A strange comedy of errors
23 September 2018
What makes the original predator so good? In my opinion it's the tension, the fear and hunt that sets the film apart from others. There are some jokes but it's still a fairly serious movie. The 2018 Predator is not scary, it never builds tension and there is little to no hunting in this film. I can't believe Shane Black made this, considering his role in the original and directorial career thus far.

There are too many characters, not enough time spent devolping a single one. The action can be fun but it's poorly choreographed. The ending is just plain silly.

The last Predator film was great, it was simple but effective. What a bummer.

The Nice Guys (2016)
10/10
One of my favorites
7 September 2018
I could watch "Nice Guys" about once a year and love it each time. It's a great comedy that can get pretty dark. Russell Crowd and Ryan Gosling are hilarious and well written characters. The actress who plays his daughter is very good at emoting as well and she is very believable in her role. There are some great twists, I don't want to ruin anything. If you like "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" then this is an amazing follow-up. The action is cool and fun, the dialogue is on point and the running length of the film is tight.

Ghost Vault
5 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Vault is a strange mix of genres that has some great ideas but dies very quickly. The first 20 mins are awesome, it's a cool bank robbery but they do a pretty silly job of bringing in the ghost/ demons. The crew that's robbing the bank have horrible communication skills and people are just running all over the place. I personally like James Franco but he doesn't say or do too much despite being integral to the plot. I was never scared, I got a little frustrated by the wasted potential of the plotline. The Vault could have been better.

Elephant (2003)
10/10
A haunting tradegy that continues to stay relevant
4 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Gus Van Saint created a very real film, no gimmicks, no stars and real dialogue. Elephant is a tough film to watch, you may expect answers or a satisfying conclusion like most movies but generally in mass shootings you don't get either. The music is paired perfectly, the perspective is fluent and transitions very well. You could say Elephant is about Columbine but it kind of reflects all school shootings and unfortunately is still relevant to today. Gus Van Saint does a great job of not pinning the motivation on a single interest or hobby. Mental health, easy access to guns, violent imagery and bullying all play a role.

Dark and twisted but not very accurate
30 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I think the acting and mood of the film are great but there are many issues with the plot not following real life events. Henry never killed Ottis. They flipped on each other after drifting apart and being arrested. If the two were on Chicago, it wasn't for long. Henry met Becky Powell (Ottis' niece, not sister) in Florida and during that time he held down a normal job and was fairly stable until he killed Kate Rich and Becky.

I don't get the need for so many inconsistencies. The real story works well on its own. This is still a very dark and gruesome film. I can see why some people left upset after watching it.
