The Walk (II) (2015)
9/10
An Intensely Captivating Experience.
4 October 2015
The Walk is a visual masterpiece with a captivating story and superb acting. It was intense, thrilling, and emotional. The cinematography was top notch and the CGI was impeccable. This was truly an amazing cinematic experience that was made for IMAX 3D.

The basic story of The Walk is this: a French street performer becomes obsessed with hanging a high wire between the two Twin Towers and walking on it. He flies to New York, recruits a few people to help him, and after weeks of of planning, is ready to perform an impossible stunt that will be remembered forever. The script is very well written and the story comes across very nicely to the viewer. It focuses on all the right moments for the right amount of time, which means the pacing is generally good. My only problem arises in the beginning as I felt it was a little rushed. Character development is also not the finest, but it is enough to make the viewer care about the characters. Other than that the story was told in a very captivating way that left viewer on the edge of their seat.

The Walk is a visual treat, specifically the last part of the film. There are magnificent, swooping camera shots showing off the beautiful Twin Towers in all their glory and with IMAX 3D, the viewer feels like they are thousands of feet in the air on the high wire. There were multiple times in this movie where vertigo kicked in due to the crazy heights portrayed in the film. The cinematography really helps the viewer become immersed in the experience as there are so many memorable shots of the Twin Towers and views of New York City. The CGI used to create this wonderful experience looks insanely real and really makes one appreciate the beauty and height of the Twin Towers. When Philippe Petit is on the high wire, wind and distant traffic noises are added to the incredible CGI to enhance the feeling of being 110 stories up in the air and with moving camera angles, the experience is beautiful and realistic.

The acting in this movie is superb. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is amazing as Philippe Petit and really does a good job showing how insane Petit really was. Charlotte Le Bon also does a fine job portraying Petit's girlfriend, and Ben Kingsley gives a good performance as Petit's mentor. All the supporting cast give great performances as well.

Robert Zemeckis does an amazing job making this movie as intense and thrilling as possible. His direction really made this movie what it is; and it is visual spectacle told within a great story.

In the end, The Walk is a visually thrilling and intensely told masterpiece. It boast beautiful cinematography, flawless CGI, great acting and direction, and a captivating story. This is truly a movie to behold in IMAX 3D and one will come out of the theater feeling immensely satisfied with the experience. The Twin Towers were beautifully portrayed in this movie and made one appreciate their existence even more. I am proud to say that this is one of the best and most satisfying movie experiences of this year.

Inside Out (I) (2015)
9/10
Amazing movie with a great concept and beautiful animation
26 July 2015
Inside Out is Pixar Studio's latest animated offering and it may be their best yet. Pixar has given us great movies like Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Up, and Wall-E and while those movies were all quite good, Inside Out is possibly their most original and interesting concept yet. Not only does it have beautiful animation, but it also has a fascinating story. It focuses on the human brain and our emotions which is a very complicated subject, but the movie makes it so bright and easy to understand that even little kids could get it.

It is a Pixar movie so naturally, Inside Out has rich and colorful animation. The colors were bursting and even for an animated movie, the cinematography was excellent. I really believed in all the characters and locations, partly thanks to the wonderful animation.

Even if it is just their voices, the cast was great in their roles. Each actor or actress fit their role very well especially the characters of the emotions.

The story/plot is the real standout of this movie. It is a brilliant realization of how our emotions work inside our brains. This is a very complex subject, one that scientists have been working on for many years. Inside Out brings a new perspective to the screen with many new ideas. It blows my mind how the filmmakers were able to come up with such an intricate design of the human brain what with our emotions being characters or long term memory being like a huge maze in our brain. There are so many little clever things in Inside Out that really makes you change your perspective on how the mind works. The story itself is much like an adventure as it focuses on the mind of an eleven year old girl and the difficulties of that age. While she is going on an emotional adventure in the real world, the characters of the emotions are going on an adventure in her mind which makes for some interesting storytelling.

In the end, Inside Out is a very clever film with great animation and music. The actors/actresses do a fine job voicing their parts and the directors really bring the world inside the movie to life. Above all else, the concept and design of the whole movie is amazing. The story is rich with adventure and some good humor. This a brilliantly crafted movie and certainly is another Pixar classic. It might even be their best and inventive idea yet.

A big, dumb, fun action flick.
26 July 2015
Terminator Genisys is a big, bloated, fun, action-packed summer blockbuster. It boasts entertaining action, lots of CGI, and an interesting yet confusing story/plot. There were some general flaws in the newest addition to the Terminator franchise, but all in all, Genisys was an entertaining ride.

The story/plot in Genisys has enormous potential but is weighed down by unnecessary and confusing plot points and time traveling. The premise is an interesting one: a company (called SkyNet) made an app/software program that is apparently very useful for everyone in the world so naturally everyone wants to get it when it's available. The truth is that SkyNet will then destroy the human race once they have this software. The audience sees this destruction early on in the movie and how the remaining humans fight the evil robots. Ultimately, a few folks have to go back in time and destroy the software before it is released to the world. Now, this concept is certainly interesting, but it was executed in such a confusing way that one can't really grasp the details and it's hard to keep up with various things. Naturally, with the confusing plot come many plot holes. And more plot holes. Even with the confusing and complicated plot, it wasn't as confusing as I thought it would be. I understood more of the concept than I thought I would and I certainly though that it was an interesting story. None the less, it was executed in a confusing way that many people might have difficulty understanding.

The acting in this movie is decent for the most part. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the Terminator of course and he does it well even though playing a machine is something almost anyone could do. Emilia Clarke plays Sarah Connor and I was skeptical about her but in the end she turned out to be really good. Jason Clarke (who is NOT related Emilia Clarke) plays John Connor and he is another good addition to the cast. The actor that I had some problems with was Jai Courtney. He was very bland in his role and had some potentially comedic moments, but they sort of fell flat. J.K. Simmons was criminally underused but he was still great in his role.

Let's talk about the action. This movie is filled to the brim with action sequences. They certainly are entertaining and some will require you to shut off your brain and just enjoy it without thinking "is that even possible?". I had great fun with many of the action scenes and while they weren't very revolutionizing or anything, they were still very enjoyable in that dumb but fun way. Along with the action comes a ton of CGI. This movie almost relied a bit too much on CGI but thankfully most of it was good. There were a few CGI shots that could have been improved but generally speaking, it was quite good.

Director Alan Taylor has once again proved that while he may not be a great director for story and dialogue, he has an immensely impressive visual style. He also directed Thor: The Dark World and I was very pleased with that film's visuals and so I at least knew that Terminator Genisys would be pleasing to the eye.

The score for Genisys is a little generic, but still very fitting to the movie. There were some great pieces for the big action sequences that improved the scene and made it feel epic.

In the end, Terminator Genisys has a confusing story/plot and some mediocre acting, but it also has very fun action and generally good CGI. I was impressed with the film's visual style and action which were two things that I really wanted to see from this movie. While it may not be the smartest movie in theaters, it certainly is a fun summer action flick.

A fun movie, but has a few downfalls
16 July 2015
Jurassic World is the newest addition to the Jurassic Park franchise (4th movie). To be honest, I have not seen any of the previous installments of the Jurassic Park franchise because I was never interested in dinosaurs (not even as a kid). I went and saw this movie primarily because I thought it looked more like a modern action movie and less of a dinosaur movie. That was certainly a wrong assumption on my behalf because it is wholeheartedly a dinosaur flick. I still had fun with it but not as much as I had hoped.

The action is absolutely my favorite part of this movie. It's not that kind of exhilarating and intense action that one would find in Kingman: The Secret Service; rather, it is fun, dumb action that one would just enjoy while munching on some buttery popcorn. I found the action very entertaining especially in the second act. There isn't much action in the first act and I had some problems with the third act. The third act mostly focuses on the dinosaurs and there is a lot of action with just the dinosaurs. No big spoilers but at the end there is literally a dinosaur fist fight between these two huge dinosaurs. It was even choreographed like a human fist fight so it looked really odd when dinosaurs were doing it. I disliked the third act because it focused a lot on the dinosaurs combat and seeing that I'm not interested in dinosaurs, that got almost boring for me. The second act had some awesome action though which I enjoyed immensely.

The story/plot in Jurassic World is decent. For the most part, it's easy to understand and there aren't too many plot holes. Yet some of the plot points are a little muggy and not fleshed out well enough. The pacing in this movie was absolutely fine and character development was generally good as well. Speaking of characters, these characters were so darn clichéd that it was laughable. Bryce Dallas Howard played the usual uptight business woman, Chris Pratt played the scruffy, stubborn adventure type guy, and Vincent D'Onofrio played the stupid military dude who wants to use everything as a weapon (like dinosaurs). All these characters were extremely clichéd which was kind of off-putting to me. Also, probably the biggest issue this film has is the dialogue. Holy moly it is cheesy! Almost every other spoken line is a one-liner cheese-fest! The cheesy-ness is cringeworthy that's how bad it is. The writers could have tried a little harder right?

Finally, the acting in this movie is really good given the amount of cheesy dialogue and everyones characters being clichéd. Chris Pratt is one fine actor and he did well in his role. Bryce Dallas Howard was good in her role especially at the end. The rest of the cast was just as good and really surprised me.

In the end, Jurassic World had fun action and great acting. On the downside, it had a relatively weak story/plot, unbelievably clichéd characters, and laughably bad dialogue. I had fun with this movie but many things could have been improved. Like I said before, I'm not much of a dinosaur fan but I still gave this movie a chance thinking it was not heavily oriented towards dinosaurs. I was wrong which slightly disappointed me but I still had good fun with Jurassic World.

Spy (2015)
8/10
Hilarious movie with surprisingly good action
16 July 2015
Comedy (and now action) director Paul Feig is back at it again with his newest movie Spy. Spy is definitely the most funny spy/mission movie out there and there is actually some very entertaining action in it. Both categories are handled expertly and by the time the movie finished it had exceeded my expectations.

Paul Feig is a natural comedy director and there is no shortage of comedy in this movie. It leaves plenty of room for action but the comedy is ramped up and ready to roll right when the movie starts. Melissa McCarthy is a natural comedic actress and she is certainly funny in this movie but surprisingly, Jason Statham was actually the funniest person in this movie. His character is almost a spoof on his previous movie characters because he always plays badass, serious men. In Spy he plays a over the top version of himself which is hilarious. Statham really nails it on this one. The supporting cast is not only funny but also extremely well chosen by the casting directors.

The story/plot is actually quite generic but considering that this is a comedy movie it almost makes it seems like a spoof of classic spy movies. Basically, McCarthy's character has to go undercover to find a nuclear bomb and stop bad people from using it to blow up the world. A small gripe I have was that the movie dragged on just a little to long especially in the third act. It's all made funny and entertaining though, with the barrage of comedic relief and action that is present in the whole movie.

Surprisingly, the action in this movie is really well done. I was expecting this to be more focused on the comedy and the action would be toned down, but instead there was very enjoyable action throughout the movie. From intense (and silly) car/scooter chases to (silly) gun shootouts, this movie packed in quite a bit of action.

In the end, Spy had a great humor and a nearly perfect cast. The plot was generic but still fun and the action was extremely entertaining. My expectations were certainly blown away by this hilarious summer action movie.

Tomorrowland (2015)
7/10
A very inventive and original film, but not without its flaws
9 June 2015
Tomorrowland is a bright sic-fi movie that boasts great visuals, good acting, and solid directing. There were some disappointing aspects to the movie but overall it was very fun movie.

Story/plot are absolutely essential in this movie as there are so many directions the story could take. It is original material so the writers didn't have to follow any previously established material which gave them a lot more freedom. The movie starts off with the viewer getting a glimpse of the world of Tomorrowland and it's so magnificent and beautiful that you are ready to stay in Tomorrowland forever. Shortly after that, we get another scene in Tomorrowland and it's just as amazing as the first. It makes you want to discover a place like Tomorrowland and actually live there. After those two scenes however, we're back to reality on our planet Earth and the movie doesn't return to Tomorrowland until the end. That was disappointing because they established this awesome world and then they don't "use" it. It's always a presence in the movie but not a physical presence. The end is where we see Tomorrowland again but it's lost it's magic from before and besides, we don't get to see as much as before. I was ready to go on an adventure in Tomorrowland but it turned out to be more an adventure on "boring" old Earth.

Another problem with the general plot was that the first two thirds of the movie are very enjoyable and fun, but the last third is very "meh". It gets a little clichéd and surprisingly preachy. The end is also quite anti-climactic which was a letdown. I just wasn't very impressed with how things ended because the movie had POTENTIAL and then it sort of fell flat in the third act.

On the brighter side, the world of Tomorrowland was incredibly intricate and beautiful. It was essentially the definition of futuristic. The inventions and the technology were incredible and the imagery was fantastic. The level of detail that went into the creation of Tomorrowland is indescribable.

The acting in this movie is very good as well. George Clooney is good and Britt Robertson is also surprisingly good in the lead role. Raffey Cassidy is a very young actress and often child actors are very bad. But in her case, she was very good which can only spell a successful future for her.

Brad Bird did some very impressive stuff behind the camera. His style of action was fun and unique and he certainly can make his characters believable.

In the end, Tomorrowland had some good aspects and some bad aspects. The movie didn't stay long in Tomorrowland which was disappointing because it was so inspiring and pristine that it would have been fine of they had spent the whole movie there. The third act was also disappointing and anti-climactic. On the plus side, Tomorrowland itself was one of the best fantasy worlds brought to the big screen and the CGI was very good. The actors did a great job portraying their roles and Brad Bird was the right guy to direct this movie. Though it had some letdowns, Tomorrowland was a fun and inventive summer movie.

San Andreas (2015)
7/10
Very generic but still a blast
30 May 2015
San Andreas is the newest disaster movies and it's essentially like every other disaster movie. Even so, this movie was exceedingly entertaining with it's visual effects and impressive sound design. I wasn't expecting much when going into this movie but it definitely exceeded my few expectations.

When going into this movie, one isn't going into it expecting an inventive story and lots of talking. One is instead expecting insane amounts of destruction and a visual spectacle. That's exactly what one will get when watching this movie. The visual effects are insane in this movie and just a blast to behold in 3D. The amount of detail to every CGI shot was impeccable. That being said, there were a few shots that were very obvious that it was CGI being used there. But those shots were few and far between and it didn't ruin the movie at all.

I have to give light to the sound design as well because it was amazing. The sound department deserves an Oscar for their incredible work on this film.

The story/plot is where this movie is weakest. This movie is basically as generic as a movie can get. Then again, this movie is considered to be an entirely original movie because it's not based off of previously created material. The actual story/plot is solid enough but still a little messy. Character development was generally pretty good but it could have been better. I suppose the worst part about this category is the pacing. The pacing is very messy and it jumps around a lot. The ending is quite abrupt as well I might add.

Finally, all the actors did a fine job doing their thing and Brad Peyton delivered the goods with his directing skills.

In the end, San Andreas is a movie boasting insane visuals, and a great sound design. It is generic and the pacing is off but at the end of the day, this movie is all about the visual effects and destruction. And it delivers just that. This movie is definitely worth seeing on the big screen and preferably in 3D.

Insane and exhilarating, but doesn't quite live up to the hype
23 May 2015
Mad Max: Fury Road is an insane movie boasting amazing stunts, great action, artistic cinematography, epic music, and much more. It had many good aspects to it but in the end it didn't quite live up to the hype.

The latest installment in the Mad Max franchise is essentially all about the action. The action is insane for sure and immensely thrilling to watch. George Miller has such a unique style when it comes to action and it definitely shows in his latest piece of work. The stunts are crazy and very believable as most of the stunts were done practically without the use of CGI.

The cinematography on this movie is splendid in it's own way. The colors are very saturated which oddly gives the movie a more gritty look. The camera work also fits nicely with the action.

The soundtrack for this movie is thrillingly epic and may be one of the best soundtrack out there. Each piece is electrifying and fits in perfectly with the movie.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are amazing as the two lead roles in this movie. They bring a sense of desperation to the movie and their characters. The supporting cast is also great in their specific parts.

The story/plot is not so important in this movie but it is still there and there are some important plot points one does not want to miss. There were some messy moments on the story but all in all, it felt complete. The pacing was very fast and there was next to no quiet time, but it still felt like the movie was evened out quite nicely. My only gripe is that the characters weren't fully developed.

In the end, Mad Max: Fury Road is an exhilarating ride with great action, music, cast, and cinematography. It was gritty and dark but extremely entertaining and thrilling. I had very high expectations for this movie and it didn't quite live up to the hype, but I still think that it's one of the best movies of 2015 so far.

Avengers assemble again and it's awesome
9 May 2015
The new Avengers movie is a worthy sequel to the first. It has great action, incredible visuals, compelling characters, and good humor.

The story/plot is one of the slight downfalls of this movie. The plot is there but it isn't strong or developed to it's full potential. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. One of the upsides though, is the constant humor. It is definitely a relief to have some humor in all the grittiness and darkness. The pacing is generally good but the beginning is just a tad slow. If you've seen previous Marvel movies then character development is just fine in this movie. If you're new to Marvel the character development will not seem so good. The chemistry between the Avengers felt natural and well developed. I also enjoyed seeing characters from other Marvel movies (War Machine, The Falcon) make an appearance in this movie.

This movie has some very talented cast members and they show their skills whether it's at humor, action, or interacting with others.

Joss Whedon did great with directing the first Avengers and he does another great job with the second. Even though he was exhausted by the end of making this movie, he still produced a fun action flick.

The action in this movie is insane. And it's where this movie is at its best. It's just a blast to watch especially the climatic scene at the end. I literally had goosebumps at times during the action. The visual effects are very impressive as well. From explosions and spaceships to flying superheroes and robots, it all looked great.

Some other highlights: Hawkeye being developed more. The Vision. War Machine. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

In the end, the second Avengers movie is a worthy entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It had awesome action and visuals, cool characters, and good humor. Story and plot weren't the best but it didn't ruin the movie. I seriously doubted that this movie would live up to the first but I think it definitely did.

Furious 7 (2015)
7/10
A fun but ridiculous popcorn flick.
11 April 2015
Furious 7 is all about crazy action and ridiculous stunts. Having seen both Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6, I went into this movie a little bit prepared; and it definitely payed off.

This is one of those movies where it would benefit if the viewer saw the previous installments in the franchise. It has a lot of connections especially to the sixth. That being said, I think after the first part of the movie one can definitely catch up on what's going on. The plot was easy enough to understand although some of it was a little complicated. The story is also easy to understand, but there are moments that aren't fleshed out and kind of leave the viewer hanging. Not to mention some plot holes here and there.

This time around, the franchise has a new director: James Wan. He brings a new feel to it for sure, but it's a nice change and Wan does a good job handling such a huge movie.

Furious 7 is one of those movies that has a ton of characters; and in this installment, there are more than ever before. The actors portraying the old roles and the new, do a decent job doing what they're here to do.

Brian Tyler does an excellent job with the score for this movie. It's an electrifying mix of electronic synths and strings.

Now we get to probably the biggest part of this movie: the action. There is a ton of it, but if you're used to the Fast & Furious franchise, this should come as no surprise. What should also not come as a surprise, is that a lot of the action is super ridiculous and over the top. Yet in this movie, the over the top action is just pure fun. James Wan brings a very unique style to the action, as he uses different cinematography methods and different action techniques. The action might be unrealistic, but it is extremely entertaining to watch.

Not being a lifelong fan of Paul Walker, I have come to appreciate in the last three F&F movies how great an actor he was. He was a highlight in this movie for sure and he was given a great send off at the end. He will be missed.

In the end, Furious 7 had a surprisingly good plot and strong story; albeit some plot holes here and there. Direction was different but still great, the music was fun, and the cinematography was unique. The action was crazy and ridiculous, but super fun. Furious 7 wasn't a brainy, thought-provoking movie, but it sure was an entertaining ride.

RIP Paul Walker.

Better than the first but still has some flaws.
20 March 2015
Insurgent is much better than the first film in the series but it still has its flaws throughout. While it is much more intense and gripping than Divergent, the plot is still a mess and the dialogue is very clichéd.

This movie is based off of the popular Divergent Series. Personally I have read the first two books and wasn't overly impressed by them. I watched the first movie and thought it was very bland and now here we are at the second movie.

Let's start off by saying the movie is very different from the books. Some of the changes I liked and some of the changes were just dumb. The plot in general is still convoluted and just not easy to follow. I felt like the first movie was a rip-off of the Hunger Games series and with the second I still think that but with less confidence than before. For one, I think the world built inside the Divergent series is much more interesting than The Hunger Games. Moving on to the actual story (script). The main problem here is the dialogue and while I thought it was going to be much worse, there were still some lines that were painfully clichéd.

I don't have much to say about the acting in this movie because in all honesty, it's nothing special, but it's also far from terrible. As for directing, I think the director did a very good job.

Two things I want to touch on is the music and cinematography. The music I thought was excellent and fit the movie perfectly. but what really blew me away on this movie is the cinematography. It was amazing. Really, it was some of the best I've seen in recent movies. Congrats to you Florian Ballhaus.

Finally we come to the CGI and action. The first movie had a minimal amount of both and that's what made it kind of bland. But this film just raised the bar with the action and CGI. And ultimately, it made it more intense. The action is definitely very fun to watch but what makes the action scenes fun to watch is the CGI. And I'm particularly talking about the end. No spoilers but the end is just packed with crazy visual effects. And while the visual effects were spectacular to look at, some of it was pretty bad. I mean there was a ton of visual effects and they were generally well done, but some of it was so obvious that it was shot on a green screen that it was almost cringeworthy.

In the end, Insurgent was much better than the first movie but still had bad dialogue and a complex plot. On the plus side it had great music, phenomenal cinematography, and fun CGI eye-candy that was quite good. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this movie.

A fun movie, but a bit over the top
23 February 2015
Kingsman is the first of many spy movies coming out this year (Mission Impossible, James Bond etc.) and it is pretty awesome. We have Colin Firth playing a smooth gentleman spy/killer and we've got Samuel L. Jackson playing a hilarious, weird villain. I mean, this is enough reason to go see this right?

The story is loosely based on a graphic novel so it's not entirely original, but it is definitely not any Marvel superhero movie. The story and plot are a little different than most movies, but it is still straightforward and fairly easy to understand. It is a really cool concept to; extremely proper, dressed up gentlemen spies/killers going out to stop this maniac of a villain from destroying the world. Speaking of the villain, this guy doesn't always seem like an obvious villain because sometimes you see his point. And he's very funny too; for example how he can't stand the sight of any violence. Kingsman is not only a gory action movie though, it also has plenty of good humor. So basically, the story is very humorous, genius and well paced, while the plot is different but still easy to understand.

In the acting category, this movie strives. Colin Firth is awesome and fits his role perfectly. Samuel L. Jackson is also perfect for his role as the villain; he really brings his character across as a hilarious dude, but also an evil maniac. And the main character is played by newcomer, Taron Egerton. Man is he great. He was funny, but also did some great action stunts. Literally, the casting guys on this movie nailed it.

I loved the music on this movie as well. It had this really great theme, but in between, it also had some great pop music that really fit well with the action scenes. Now this isn't you're usual pop music that comes on the radio 1,000 times per day. No this is just fun lyric-less pop jams that help give the movie a humorous tone.

CGI is another category that was present in this movie. Though a lot was done practically there were some visual effects in here as well. And most of it wasn't bad. But some of it was quite bad. A few of the shots were just so apparent that they were CGI, that it was almost cringe worthy. Other than that, the CGI wasn't bad, but it was far from perfect.

Action was a big part of this movie so I will touch on that a little bit. First of all, it was very fun to watch. It was very stylized, with shaky camera movement and slow-mo. There were also a few shots that vaguely resembled some Matrix camera moves, which I loved. I was very pleased with the action and the way it was shot. That being said, this movie was extremely over the top especially the action. Some of it was unrealistically unrealistic. If that makes sense. But I love over the top action so it was great.

In the end, Kingsman was a fun spy action/comedy with great acting and a cool story. While some of it was not so great, it still delivered what it was supposed to.

Seventh Son (I) (2014)
7/10
A fun fantasy movie filled with clichés
15 February 2015
Seventh Son exceeded my expeditions by a great deal. I had no high hopes for this movie in the first place but I thought it would at least be a cheesy, clichéd, fantasy movie that just might be good. Well, it definitely was clichéd and slightly cheesy but I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

First off, the story and plot were pretty basic. The movie certainly had its cheesy one-liners and the plot definitely was very clichéd with the typical good vs. evil and a "nobody" boy needs to fulfill his destiny. But other than that, the story and plot were pretty basic and didn't require much thinking. I, for one, understood what was happening for most of the time. There were moments in the movie that just happened and then weren't explained at all. Those were the moments where I was like, "So why did that happen?"

The acting... was not that bad actually. I was particularly impressed with Ben Barnes in the lead role. Julianne Moore was a pretty good evil witch and all the other supporting actors and actresses fit surprisingly well in their roles. The real downfall though is Jeff Bridges. His acting was just kind of terrible I have to admit. His voice was the main problem, it being almost inaudible. I suppose he wanted to embrace Master Gregory's scruffy manner, but it did not really work out.

Now about the actual seeing and hearing. The music was kind of that usual epic fantasy music, but none the less it fit well with the movie. Before I start on visual effects, I want to say that the color correction on this movie in the trailers looked quite ugly, but it turns out that the actual movie is just fine, especially on a big screen. Anyway, the visual effects were generally pretty good. Judging by the trailers and my own instincts, I thought they were going to be, at best, mediocre. But it turns out they were quite good. There were some moments where I thought "Yup, they definitely used green screen for that shot" or there were moments were the VFX themselves were just not quite finished or not good in general. But all in all, they were actually pretty good.

In the end, Seventh Son is an extremely fun, cheesy adventure movie that is worth seeing in theaters. If you go in with low expectations or an open mind, you will enjoy it immensely.

Visually Amazing
7 February 2015
Jupiter Ascending, quite literally, is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The visual effects and CGI were top notch; nothing looked unfinished. Everything from explosions and action scenes, to space ships and settings, this movie had all the "eye candy" one could want. The fighting sequences were executed perfectly; each one thrilling in its own way. Each singular planet or world was so stunning and precisely crafted, that one could almost feel themselves in it. The Wachowskis have made a truly gorgeous universe in their latest movie.

Michael Giacchino's music fits each scene very nicely whether it is a fast paced chase scene, or a quiet and thoughtful scene. It has a mysterious and almost hollow beauty to it, which fits this movie perfectly.

Alas, not everything in this movie is as good as the visuals. Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis give surprisingly good performances for the most part but some of their acting is just off. The other principal actors give good performances as well but all the acting could have been taken a notch higher.

Story and Plot is where this movie is weakest though. It has so much ambition and intricacy that it is to much to fit in a two hour long movie. Even though two hours is a good length, the plot just wants to keep on going and therefor the loose ends are never quite tied up. The plot is never really explained to its entirety and while one can figure out the general idea, it is hard to go deep into it. It has huge potential but rather than using it, it discards it. I give it credit for being fairly original though, and not a sequel, reboot, or based of a graphic novel or book. Originality is a great thing and the Wachowskis do it best.

Overall Jupiter Ascending lacked plot depth and great acting abilities, but it won it all back with groundbreaking visuals. Even though many more big movies are coming out in 2015, this one would be one of the best for all we know. It may not be everyone's piece of cake, but it sure is a fun sci-fi adventure that shouldn't be forgotten.

Epic, intense, and dramatic
17 December 2014
Having read the book and having seen the first two movies, I cannot say how overly excited I was to see the last installment in this trilogy. I saw it as early as possible and I'm quite glad I did. The movie starts with an intense action packed scene that has some very impressive visuals. Then we get some peaceful time with a little character development and dialogue. After that the real stuff begins. The battle is epic and huge and long. Tons of CGI and mind blowing visuals. It's very intense and dramatic but really fun to watch. Some emotional scenes follow that and then we get a nice and peaceful ending. As always Peter Jackson does a fine job directing another ambitious project. I've always felt that the cast in the Hobbit trilogy couldn't have been better, and in this movie they prove that; great performances by all. The story and plot are good but you really have to watch all the movies because without the others, this one doesn't make much sense (it's still enjoyable though). Finally, as I have said before, the visual effects are really quite stunning on this movie.

I do have a few gripes though. The opening scene could have been much longer, they could have focused more on Bilbo, the ending of the battle and such could have been more clear and efficient, and some characters farewells could have been better. Other than that though, this movie was one of the best movies of the year. The whole cast and crew did an awesome job on these movies and I just want to thank them for inspiring me in many ways. This trilogy has been very fun to watch and enjoy and I look forward to watching it many times again.

Too short, but still very entertaining
20 October 2014
I was never a huge vampire fan and really never had interest in Dracula in general but this movie piqued my interest. I found out about this movie earlier this year and it sounded very cool. The trailers didn't really help get me more interested in the movie since I found them kind of bland. When I saw the movie though it immediately exceeded my expectations. Luke Evans was a great Dracula and all the supporting cast were also very good. Gary Shore did a great job directing on his first feature length movie. Visual effects were pretty cool too although there were some snafus here and there. Action and such stuff was also fun to watch. The story was probably the slight downfall of this movie. The characters weren't developed enough and just some other things could have been better. Also the movie was just too dang short. Especially the beginning could have been much more developed. All in all though this movie was very entertaining. It definitely exceeded my expectations and I would recommend people should give this a try. NOTE: This is not a horror movie!

Awesome and intense
4 October 2014
This movie was awesome, definitely better than I thought it would be. The maze scenes were definitely my favorite, I loved how the maze was designed and all the intense scenes that happened there. The actors did a great job portraying their roles and Wes Ball did a great job making this movie the best it could be. The story was gripping and there were definitely some suspenseful scenes but they were executed very well. I was a little worried how they were going to do the ending because it's very emotional but it was really well done. The cinematography was very cool as it provided the viewer a real experience of the maze. I said this before but I was really interested how they were going to present the maze itself and after I saw the movie I think that was one of my favorite parts because it was just so cool and forbidding with it's ivy covered walls and gritty texture. Lastly, I have read the first book and was quite excited for the movie. The movie certainly didn't disappoint and stayed true to the book for the most part. I would definitely recommend this movie even for those that haven't read the book.

Entertaining but dumb at the same time
7 September 2014
Before I begin I'll just say that I know nothing about TMNT and haven't seen any of the previous movies. Here is my review: It's a fun movie for sure with some great action sequences but it's ridiculously dumb also. First off from the trailer I thought the turtles looked plain stupid but then I remembered that they were supposed to be mutants....... anyway after that I kind of got used to them. The characters (April, Vernon, Eric) weren't developed very well but you did get a sense who they were and what they were up to. The action sequences though were probably the best part of the movie even though they looked a bit like a video game at times. Some sequences were quite fun to watch like the one on the snowy mountain with the truck or the one on the roof of the skyscraper in New York. But the CGI often went a tad overboard on these sequences and you usually noticed it. One problem also with the action scenes were that often the camera would shake A LOT. For me that's not too bad but for some it might be to much. Also, from the beginning I didn't really like the whole concept of these ninja turtles. I don't know why but I just didn't like the idea. I wasn't going to watch it at first but then I went with some friends just for the fun of it and found out that it wasn't as bad as I thought. But it's still miles away from being perfect. The bottom line: it was a fun ride with some entertaining parts but really had no real intelligence or logic behind it.
