Your Place or Mine (2023)
Great film, with a great message for life, with wit and humour.
I enjoyed this film due to the message it has about risk taking, love, and your choices in life.
Sticking with one's core competencies for career choice. Not being afraid to take risks in life, and in this case regarding love and feelings. And how we easily follow paths because we're afraid, or because it's the safe option, or to be "practical" and it makes sense. Rather than following who we are and truly want.
The film truly speaks about life and how it goes for so many of us. It makes one think. Offers perspective, which for a younger viewer can be extremely valuable.
The film was easy to watch. Had good bits of humour. Great for a Sunday night.
This film could have easily been inspired by a true story.
Bullet Train (2022)
Started out questionable. Ended up loving it!
Such a brilliant film. Pure quality film making that really takes one on a journey with the cast. Doesn't take itself too seriously with good bits of comic relief in between. Has excellent reveals, and comes together well at the end. Brad Pitt's role is also just hilariously brilliant!
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
Brilliant. Cool. Fun. Mysterious. Dark. All in one.
Thoroughly enjoyed this show. Starts off slowly, but with enough intrigue, and slowly divulges pieces of this large puzzle that keep the viewer engaged and wanting to solve the mystery with him. Often found myself rewinding so that I could keep track of details (not necessary, not usually the type to do this, but wanted to!).
Love the way the the main protagonist (Mickey) is portrayed as this cool, brazen, yet humble lawyer. The character development is limited, for now, but one comes to enjoy all the characters.
Some decent cinematography - the soliloquy sides he has with his driver.
Great series! Want more.
Uncharted (2022)
Nice effort. Cash grab. Rushed
The film didn't encapsulate the uncharted experience and feeling, as the games did. I constantly felt like none of the directors, nor actors, had played the game - which is honestly pathetic. Did they even have the original writers of the game helping them on this?
The plot had many holes that just didn't make sense - such as how the mercenaries knew where the treasure was, were there before him, just in a slightly inaccurate location - what the hell was the point of finding the keys, almost drowning, etc etc, for the bad guys to know pretty much where they were!?
Also, how did Sully get down to drake when he was passed out? Nate had to go on a mission to get down there.
Overall - rushed, just to ride the hype train of Tom Holland and show off his ripped physique. Really hope they can improve on this in the very predictable sequel. I did enjoy the final sequence.
The only part that made me enjoy the film was the final action scene with flying ships.
Let It Snow (2019)
Hopeful. Joyful. Romantic. Funny. Loved it!
I enjoy films that tie multiple stories that come together in the end.
The film made me feel hopeful for the future for some reason. It had great comedic moments, dealt with many issues youngsters face in our time - leaving it progressive - and had ATH's romantic side down!
I would want my Christmas to go this way if I could.
No Time to Die (2021)
Psychological action drama
One cannot view this film by itself, but must think of it in terms of the series of films. That is when you realise it's utter brilliance!!
The film has all the required elements of a bond film, but has a strong psychological aspect to it, that dives into bond, who is really is, and how he's developed as a character since Casino Royale.
They finished the series of films off perfectly well. Feeding fans exactly what they need, and doing Daniel Craig justice.
Apart from that, the camera angles, shots, locations, and villains all came together to make the perfect film.
They also leave fans perfectly confused about who will be the next bond, and played on that idea!
Modern Love (2019)
Beautiful. Hopeful. Spreads the message of love.
This miniseries made me emotional at points, and I'm not a very emotional guy. It makes one feel like there's hope and something more to look forward to. That we can overcome suffering, pain and enjoy life again.
Furthermore, it spreads the message of love in not just romantic love but also friendship love and being kind and kind to strangers.
It also makes us realise how we are more connected than we think and may have different journeys, but ultimately all go through the same thing in life.
Highly recommended!
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
Great film. High paced action that's enjoyable, but the economics behind it is unrealistic.
Enjoyed watching Chris Pine be a covert operative. A thrill seeking film. Only let down is that the economics behind the entire plot is unrealistic and doesn't make sense realistically, making for a bit of a weak plot. But enjoyable nonetheless if you just go with it.
The Losers (2010)
Chris evans made this movie for me!
A great, lighter-hearted action movie, that gives you the thrill without the deep serious tone. Thoroughly enjoyed it, with some witty humour here and there. Love the way it ends!
The Kissing Booth 2 (2020)
Quite a step up from the first one!
This movie is great. It's not your Hollywood blockbuster etc but it's not trying to be that! It's a lighthearted and fun film that's easy to watch and keeps you smiling the whole way through... well almost.
The film also carries a good message and deals with themes that adolescents typically deal with, making it very relatable.
I also enjoyed the community side of things - everyone in the school knows what's happening but they all support each other and there no bullying is conveyed in the movie. I think that is a strong message to carry and sets a good example for what school and life should be like.
Lastly, the film was overall better directed versus the first, and as a Cape Town local, didn't make me feel like I was being thrown between CT and LA the whole time - the movie just flowed better.
The Knight Before Christmas (2019)
Just a proper and true Christmas story. Warms the heart.
A heart-warming film offering up the true meaning of Christmas, that being giving back and love.
The film also shows how men should be - gentlemen and committed to one woman - and there are a few moments of good laughs!
Long Shot (2019)
Leaves you feeling warm inside
This movie is so f*ing brilliant because it carries a bunch of important life messages and reminds us to live, be ourselves, be true and it does it through Seth Rogan's insane humour and Charlize's eccentric charm.
I love Seth Rogan. I love Charlize. And I love this film for everything it embodies! Must watch.
The Meg (2018)
The acting is terrible in this film.
Not all the actors, but some of them are really terrible.
Shaft (2019)
S.L Jackson in his prime! Just what the doctor ordered
This movie was excellent! A good story combined with fun-filled chaos and mayhem, with the added S.L Jackson humour!
Jackson is in his prime in this type of film; one can see he is at home on screen. These are the type of movies he loves doing and he definitely delivered!
This film is perfect for just sitting back and relaxing when your in the mood for a comedy.
Just Friends (2005)
So true. Loved it!
It was difficult to watch because you just want him to close the deal and tell her how he truly feels!
Great movie for all the guys stuck in the friends zone or who have that one girl in their head they've always loved, but couldn't tell her how he feels. This movie might change that.
Excellent comedy
Love Actually (2003)
Spread love!
I would've rated it a 7, but at the end of the film it comes together that the message is just to spread love.
It is also incredible how they tell 8 stories in one two hour film and then glue them all together at the end.
So it goes to a 9 because it doesn't matter how you find love, we all find it differently and the bottomline is - spread the love!
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Ignites the Christmas spirit in all of us!
Great film! Excellent for the family and just leaves one smiling throughout the film. I liked how they sort of included a church scene, cause at the end of the day that's what Christmas is all about and where it all started! Great Netflix film
Status Update (2018)
Such a "feel good" movie. Love it!
The film carries a great message and is really well directed with the story just flowing and falling into place.
It's got a great bit of romance, comedy and some drama to it and I would definitely recommend teenagers to watch it!
Night School (2018)
Morally excellent and promotes great values
This is a fantastic film that is humorous and promotes great values, like the value of education and how if one takes it seriously it can change your life. There is so much cynicism toward college and university that it's terrible.
Further, this film was a decent film and was somewhat inspiring and motivating in its own way. It carries a great message, while delivering that message through much humour!
Recommend it!
The Living Daylights (1987)
The car was cool, the Bond wasn't.
A very dark type of bond. His quirks and flirts didn't work well at all and it looked like pure acting. The love dynamic didn't work or make sense between bond and Kara. Daniel Craig got this type of combination right where he can be a badass asshole, serious and mean, but then also be charming and show his affectionate side. As I cruise through these films I think more and more how great he really is. Best yet.
The story was okay, but not the best and didn't always add up.
Now for the good points. The car was really cool. The stunts were fantastic.
Set It Up (2018)
Ended well, but Netflix Originals show how American Culture is Degrading
The first quarter was very odd and the sexual references were really childish and unnecessary in the film. Films with sexual references like that really just degrade it and it just shows how American culture is being degraded and is losing its value.
Example, when the guy undresses and pees in the elevator was just rediculous, a 5 year old would laugh at that.
On the plus, the film ended well and I loved the romance between Harper and the guy (can't get to his name now), like the scene in the bedroom with the pizza. It carried a good message at the end of the day and was a sweet romance.
Extra: This is the first Netflix Original I've actually finished because all of the others have been completely rubbish and a waste of time, partly due to the American culture degradation aspect, and I hate it because I Love American films, but if Netflix is the future then I don't see much hope for them globally. They need to fix this.
